So this really has nothing to do with my oral health progress however the conversation is what I wanted to share since it really hit me how right he is.
Doc: So, how are you doing with your quitting smoking?
Me: Am doing good, well on my way to becoming a non-smoker.
Doc: Oh Michele, you will never be a non-smoker. That would be like telling a mother she can be a virgin again.
Me: What do you mean?! Being a non-smoker is the ultimate goal of anyone who give these up.
Doc: No. Being a non-smoker is someone who has never smoked. Your goal is to be an ex-smoker. A non-smoker has no idea the courage, strength, resolve and sacrifice the ex-smoker has had to endure. Being a non-smoker is easy, being an ex-smoker is a sign of strength and commitment and I am in awe of your accomplishment so far.
Wow! I never thought about it like that but I will from now on. I don't want to be a NON-SMOKER......I want to be and EX-SMOKER!
Have a great smoke free day all. Keep looking ahead, not back. You don't live in the past anymore. One hour at a time and we will make it.
