...days to go. Are you ready for Christmas? People ask that all the time, but what does it mean to you? To me, it means being ready for a long day, possibly being alone for most of it. You can only watch The Christmas Story so many times in a row! If it gets to be too much, will it trigger the addiction?

If you have a big family event to attend or host, how will you handle those moments you need to get away? How will you handle holiday drinking?  Some of us have great memories of people celebrating with us but now they're no longer here. Holiday depression is a real thing. I fight it by planning something fun to do. This year that means seeing what movies are playing in the village theater.

Traditions are important, but they don't have to be set in stone. In my family we try to be as flexible as possible to accommodate all the in-laws and step-families. I will insist on only one thing for that specific day:  I will face-time my grandsons who are too far away.

Oh wait, there's one more thing I'll do: I'll come here, like I do every single day. My one-year quit is my Christmas gift to myself.

I became nicotine-free on Christmas Day 2017. That's what I use as my quit date. I had smoked cigarettes for 45 years, then vaped Juuls for a few months before quitting cold turkey when I used up my supply of pods. I am a retired widow, living in Upstate NY.
