Give and get support around quitting

Support needed

Hi All -

I smoked cigarettes for 20 years. 4 years ago I quit cigarettes and switched to the Juul. I’ve had the odd cigarette here and there (mostly while in Vegas or a night out), but when I wake up in the morning, I have not been compelled to smoke cigs again. The problem is I got more addicted to my vape then I was cigarettes. I have found it extremely difficult to quit the vape as the cravings are intense. I started my quit journey last week (Tuesday) and made it 2.5 days without vaping until I had a drink.

I went out and bought more vape pods and vape throughout the weekend. I “quit” again yesterday and made it fairly well throughout the day, but woke up this morning with intense cravings.

I am using the patch, but it does not really satisfy my cravings so far. I don’t want to say that I’m feeling depressed as that is a bit extreme, but I also feel like I’ve lost my best friend. I vape first thing in the morning until last thing at night. Mostly because I could do it inside and or whenever I wanted to.

I know this is mostly for cigarettes, but haven’t found many resources for quitting vaping. Has anyone experienced this? Will it get better? I’m really trying to make this work for myself, but also for my wife and kids.

Thanks for reading my long post and appreciate any words of encouragement!

We have some resources here: Quitting E-cigarettes | Guides & Tools | BecomeAnEX  but also there is the E-Cig and Vape Quitters and Users‌.  You may find a sprinkling of posts around the site about vaping through the Magnifying glass search in the upper right as well. As indingrl‌ suggests, the principles learned about addiction and quitting should be fairly similar since nicotine is common between both.

Welcome to the Ex.  We have many quitters here now trying to quit vaping.  It's still a nicotine addiction so the information and support on this site still applies.  You're still going to experience nicotine withdrawal.  The first few days can be especially difficult, but you can do it.   From what many have described, vaping sounds more difficult to quit than smoking.  From what I've read, it can be more addictive because greater doses of nicotine are delivered.  Other's here switched to vaping from smoking.   At the time, it probably sounded safer, but now we're learning about the side effects.

If you've not done so, read information on this site about nicotine addiction and create a quit plan My EX Plan | BecomeAnEX .  Knowledge and preparation has been helpful for many to be successful.

Part of your quit plan is what you'll do instead of vaping.  Many things work for different people.  I used NRT and Welbutrin for this quit (over 2 years).   An aid will help reduce the cravings, but you will still have to do the work.   For me it was keeping busy, walking, chewing on straws, Sour Patch Kids, and the Ex.  Other quitters used different things to keep them distracted or occupied.

I'm glad you found this site.  For many, having support has made quitting doable.

We're here for you.  Make the commitment for one day at time.  Just reach out anytime you need encouragement or want to share your journey.

Hi and Welcome to Ex’s...Dpremier1

I am so glad you found our site.  Unfortunately, your feelings are normal.  You are an addict, and the bad news, you switched one addiction for another.  Some here have found that quitting JUUL was harder because you can do it everywhere, however, I have seen many “kick this habit”.  I suggest you read at My EX Plan | BecomeAnEX there you will plan for your quit like no other thing in your life.  Then you will rid all smoking/vape paraphernalia.  Educate yourself here by reading many of the posts, and substitute cigarette smoking with vape.  Also, you might want to join the JUUL group https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/e-cig-users ... Quitting an addiction takes hard work....but in time it is worth it.  You must find healthy activities to replace your addiction.  (Ie., read the Bible, pray, do a puzzle, learn a language, walk, exercise, etc.,)...Keep close to the support site, we are here for you...~ Colleen 575 DOF

I know there are some distinctions to be made about smoking, pipe smoking, chewing tobacco, rolling tobacco from a can and smoking, vaping...but the bottom line is that nicotine is the drug we are all addicted to. Please realize that you switched to a different nicotine delivery system and so have not gone through withdrawals. They are disturbing and what you are feeling is typical and will pass--see it through. Ex is here to help everyday. Please check in regularly, read, blog, comment, ask questions.

Annette vaped Juul. Here is a link to her page  AnnetteMM . You might find some comfort in knowing you are not at all alone here at Ex. We get the crazy drive to get the drug--and we get smobriety/vabriety too. Yes you can, one day at a time.
