Life long Obsession

Hi, Just advice on the best e-cig to quit smoking after 30 years of this mess. When I think about it I know that I do not even like cigarettes a little (smell, cost, sleeping issues, breathing problems, control over my life, the embarrassing crutch, the burn holes). I do not like the smell when I walk back into a room I had previously smoked. BUT I am somehow obsessed with smoking?? I think about it when when I’m not thinking about it or even if I’m not in “need”.

I know I will need to use an e-cigarette & maybe a patch to get through the first 6 weeks. I just need to know the best one that helped ex-smoker to quit. I think I may need the ones that have the feel of a cigarette - just to get away from smoking for a day. I don’t like the vapes or the Jule-type ones. They make me cough a lot & don’t seem to get me away from cigarettes.

In ever other aspect of my life I can control myself - even with food. But this has been the biggest mistake and pain of my life. I so wish they’d just make them illegal to buy in stores.

Anyway, this is my very first, small step - asking for help. I’m embarrassed about how strong a hold cigarettes seem to control me and my life. It makes no logical sense. Any and all advice is much appreciated!

Elle0000‌ I can't give you the answer you are looking as the only thing I know about e cigs is that it is still considered vaping. I can suggest what I know worked for some of  the people who quit sucessfully They would cut a straw to the size of a cigarette place cotton in one end and used that for the hand to mouth habit and some used a NRT with it also.

Anyway, learn as much as you can about withdraws and craves and what to do about each. Being prepaired and knowing what to expect makes the first days more tolerable. I would also ask you doctor about the best way to quit for you.

Everyone's quit is different but be assured no matter which you choose everyone here is willing to help.

Wishing you the best Carl

Hi and Welcome to Ex’s...Elle0000

I am so happy you want to quit smoking and found our site.  Do not be embarrassed, we are all addicts and know how hard it is to quit this addiction, but it is doable.  I can not help you will ecigs.  I can tell you what worked for me in this quit.  I planned for my quit date, I became knowledgeable in addiction and put in a lot of hard work.  First, might I suggest you read at My EX Plan | BecomeAnEX where you will plan your quit day and gain some knowledge on this addiction.  Secondly, read here at the support site.  Also, stay close to the support site for help and to encourage others on this journey.  We are here for you.  ~ Colleen 439 DOF

Every smoker has the ability to quit. I know of one person here who vaped before quitting. But she planned to quit right from the start of her switch from smoking to vaping. She looked  at it as a part of her plan. And she stuck to her goal.

If you are desperately trying to do something, anything to stop smoking, my suggestion to you is to slow down--walk, don't run. Spend sometime here at Ex getting to know the addiction, personal stories as to how each of us overcame the dependency. Blog and ask questions as much as you want to.

I bought vaping stuff prior to my quit with the intention that I would use it if I needed to. I did not use it. I returned and exchanged the item for something else after 10 days.

Compared to 20, 30, 40 years ago, there is a ton of help for quitters. Ex is one of these supports and now that you are a part of the community, the support is 365. In addition to Ex,your doc may be your ally too if she (or he) understands tobacco/nicotine addiction. Your local hospital may run a regular smoking cessation program. There may be quit meetings near you, or you might find an addiction specialist near you. The internet has lots of good info (avoid the junk--like a guru talking about quitting in an hour).

Point is, now that you've decided to quit--scope out all your options not just vaping, or the patch. Give yourself the benefit of all aids.

Quitting is a one day at a time (one step at a time, too) job. It's not something you get over it is something you grow into and discover that you can be whole without nicotine.

I'm glad you are here. I hope that you give Ex a chance and of course, first and foremost, yourself a chance. Yes you can.

Here's how I did it:  https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/people/AnnetteMM/blog/2019/09/08/how-to-quit-juul-or-vaping-in-ge...

You can get cigarette-type e-cigs at any convenience store. They're all the same, really.

Plan ahead and stick to the plan!

I cannot recommend any e-cigarette, we have people here who are trying to stop using them and they started using them to stop smoking.  I don't think they are safe at all.  Please do the reading recommended by maryfreecig‌ and know that anyone can quit, make a plan, commit to a quit.  Read everything you can find about this addiction and go forward one day at a time.  Stay close to the site.  We really all want to help.

Welcome to EX,

Ellen

I've never vaped but there are other's on this site that are trying to quit vaping.  I'm not for or against, but be careful.  Vaper's seem to be more addicted than smokers  Maybe that's because you can vape anywhere, but smoker's have to delay there next cigarette.  Just be careful you don't get addicted to something else.  Do your research.  There are various types of nicotine replacement and medications you can use if you want to use an aid.  I used Welbutrin, nicotrol inhalers, smoking cessation, and the Ex.  Educating yourself about nicotine addiction and creating a quit plan can be instrumental in being successful. And having the support from this site, made all the difference for me  this time.  There's nothing to be embarrassed about-that's why we're all here. We needed help to quit. Whatever you decide, pick a date and join us ex-smokers.  We're here to support you.
