Give and get support around quitting

Oops I did it again.

I want going to post again but I am back and not giving up. The link to alcohol for me is the key. After doing some deep research and introspection I have discovered more understanding of my addictions. I get going on my quit, start feeling so much better, then I go through some mental stuff, get too many feelings, brain gets clogged, then I drink. All down hill from there. I had quit and was feeling good this time.  Then another if my aunts just passed away suddenly and I have to go back to VB. I just wanted to be doing something unhealthy and familiar.  What is that? So dumb.

Welcome back!!! I know if I drank, it wouldn't be 5 min. and I'd be lighting up.

Glad you are back!  You know the cause of your lapses, so plan what you can do instead of smoking BEFORE the need arises.  Be prepared, not surprised when life happens.

I might suggest that you first find what you can do ins!read of drinking -because that is a proven quit killer.  Exercise is.the best thing you can do for stress and angst.

You CAN do this...Let us help!

Make a vow that you will not smoke if it happens again

Get rid of all smoking materials it lessens the chances of being tempted. 

Have a plan for what to do differently when you have the urge to smoke.

No one said this is easy.   It's important to have a plan in place for whenever something stressful happens and make a commitment that you won't smoke no matter what.   Did you create your quit plan so you have a plan in place in advance.  You can do this is you want it and we're here for you.  Reach out BEFORE you smoke.

I am glad you came back to quit smoking Coyote1 ... perhaps you should make a plan not to drink until you have a lot of quit time under your belt...and if you can’t refrain from drinking, perhaps you are addicted to alcohol....just a thought...before you choose to smoke, come here and let us at least try to talk you down...Hope you have a plan for future triggers / craves and urges...~ Colleen 282 DOF

You've taken a good look at your pattern. And are committed to not giving up. Both things are good work on your part--so keep working toward your quit. Sometimes it just takes us a bit of mulling over til we get on a sure footed quit path. Stick with it--one day at a time.

'What is this?'    Sometimes I wonder if we live in a culture that believes that nothing ever should go wrong or be painful. In quitting, I've relearned the habits of acceptance (only one day at a time) and living life on life's terms. I may not like some things, but not smoking, now that I've got the hang of it, makes coping so much easier.

Proud of you for coming back and for understanding the link between alcohol and smoking for you and for many people.  I have never been much of a drinker but when I drank, I sure did smoke.  Getting used to feeling feelings and not trying to shove them down is emotional growth...it is not easy, it is like being forced to grow up and it's no always a whole lotta fun.  You can do this...I am sorry for the loss of your aunt...take care of YOU...take care of your quit, it HAS to be your priority.

Just a thought here:  how many "oops I did it again" times are you going to allow yourself before you stop doing it again?

"  No. it's not dumb.  It's called addiction and an excuse to continue on in your addiction.  You need to get to that place in yourself where you are willing to go outside of the familiar, where you are willing to be uncomfortable - FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES.  You haven't yet reached that point of acceptance within yourself.  You KNOW the answer to beating this addiction.  You said it yourself when you said:  "I just wanted to be doing something unhealthy and familiar."  You recognize that as an excuse.  Until you are ready willing and able to get beyond that "unhealthy and familiar" point, you will continue to struggle and relapse.  If drinking causes you to relapse - then - don't drink for a while.  If that's a weakness for your quit, then strengthen your quit by not putting that into the mix.  Ya know?  You know your truth:  " I get going on my quit, start feeling so much better, then I go through some mental stuff, get too many feelings, brain gets clogged, then I drink."

So, your homework here is to figure out how to re-direct yourself when you get too many feelings and your brain gets clogged.  What will be your outlet for that - OTHER than drinking?  You need a distraction.  We've presented many on this site.  But perhaps you can come up with your own. If you know you're vulnerable to relapse when you drink - (and you do know that) - it's up to you to find the way to change that.  That's something that has to come from within you.  You know?  That takes work.  Keep working at it.  You obviously want your freedom from this addiction.  Have you put up an all out effort?  Or has it been sort of half hearted?
