Depression

I’ve been off cigs for a month and been on the 7mg nicotine patch for a week now. I’ve been feeling very depressed lately. I know nicotine is an anti-depressant, so maybe that’s why. Did anybody else go through the same thing when they quit? How did you get through it?

My depression was handled best with exercise once I was able to do it, I quit when I was so sick that I really could not do anything for a while.  The first time I was able to use a stationary bike, I felt wonderful.  I also watched funny videos, listened to favorite music, and I spent a great deal of time on this site.  I came here every morning and every evening when I first quit and after more than 5 1/2 years, I still come here most days.

Congratulations on 30 days quit, please read the blog about No Man's Land written by JonesCarpeDiem‌ that I am linking here: https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex/blog/2011/05/24/no-mans-land-days-30-to130-appr...   He also wrote one about the first four months that I read over and over again.../blogs/jonescarp.aka.dale.Jan_2007-blog/2011/06/26/what-to-expect-in-the-first-four-months   If your depression does not get better soon, please see a doctor to see if an anti-depressant is indicated.  There is no shame in using anti-depressants.

Welcome to EX,

Ellen

I think sometimes people think they will be caught in stigmas.  Depression for quitting smoking?  Only a smoker would understand.  Happens in my life all the time the never been smokers don’t get it at all.  They would if I said heroin or meth.  They think smoking was just optional.  About as optional as sticking a needle in my vein.  Yes, they are both choices.  People have jumped on the the smoking is 'evil' bandwagon but with no comprehension of how addictive it is.  I had a flat tire yesterday and it was a darned good thing there were no cigs in the car.  I had had it with stressors for days and being stranded waiting for help.  I would have had one.  I had one lozenge with me and hoped it would get me thru it.  I broke down crying.  People must have thought I was nuts.  Guess I kinda was.

There is nothing wrong with asking your doc for help.  Be it antidepressants, anxiety meds, NRT's.  We are but human and unless you live a charmed magical life where nothing ever goes wrong, quitting is gonna be a war.  Even in the good times it will snake its way in beyond physically.  My hats off to those who made it thru a cold quit.  We are all different and our lives are different in what we face day to day.  The goal is the same.  Most states have a quit line and there is a national one 24/7.

Very verbose way way of saying.......no one is weak if they need extra help.

I certainly wouldn't call nicotine an "anti-depressant". It is a stimulant, though.
