Status Updates

In my experience on Jive in this online community -  Status Updates are getting buried.  Perhaps there is a hope by the Admins of the site that it would come more to the fore - but since the platform migrated - I haven't seen that happen.  And that's been well over a year now.  I've seen the status updates fall below the radar in the community responses on a general basis.  We're missing new people all the time and that's not good..

So - I would suggest that that category of communication be eliminated on this site.  We've got already two strong forms of community interaction - Blogs and Discussions.  I don't know if Status Updates can be eliminated from the site due to whatever the parameters of Jive, but if so - let it go.  Too many new people are getting lost within our on-line community. At least from my experience of viewing the process.

The only other choice would be to point it up  - but then that would create more confliction (I just made up a new word!)  Less is more.  If you read some of the posts of new members they are totally confused as to where to post what.  Too many choices, although exciting, ultimately is  debilitating.

In my humble opinion.

So-----

I did a status update to see where it would be "seen".......and I don't see it under READ THE LATEST UPDATES.

I thought everything went into READ THE LATEST UPDATES......but I guess not.

Now Sheri SimplySheri‌ saw my status update......so....is it people who are following you who see your status update?

And....if the above is true, then, to comment on this blog.......I agree with Giulia. As a new member, I would read a title STATUS UPDATE as where I should go to post my updated status....ie.....how I am doing on my quit. HOWEVER, if only people who are following me can see this AND, I'm new so NO ONE is following me yet......then no one sees it and I leave the site thinking it's dead, inactive, uncaring or whatever.

Status Updates weren't always a part of the software.  I can't remember what year they were added honestly.  They're intended to be more of a "light" communication type. Likely focused amongst connected individuals while giving people the ability to discover others.

To some degree even I don't understand why they didn't included a Status Update filter on the All content page. Perhaps for the above mentioned reasons.  The people who designed it are not around any more to ask and there aren't plans to change it at this time. There might have been some technical limitations that prevented it from being an easy addition to the all content page when the page was designed. I'll see if there is any workaround other than this.

We activated the Status updates because of the wall post functionality not existing on this software and so that we could migrate the wall posts from Elgg to Jive.  Also it was a desired functionality to have semi private interaction style  on the new platform and that was the closes functionality to wall posting.

It's low stress way for new members to post something simple to get their quit going.  As they build confidence on the site and see how amazing the support is on the site they will hopefully move to other content types the experienced supporters prefer.

Now Sheri Dancingthrulife_6.4.13 saw my status update......so....is it people who are following you who see your status update?

Yes, probably or the home page while it was there. I can't see what notifications she sees. In truth the Status Updates are more visible than the Wall posts and anyone who participates in them is notified.  Only the person who's wall it was was notified. If you replied to someone's post on your wall you weren't notified.  Also @mentions didn't exist. Now you are notified when someone @mentions you so a notification improvement there.

Everyone can see a status update. Just as wall posts with elgg, you have to go to the person's profile to see them. or you have to look at Recent Status Updates in the EX Feed   or if you follow people you may see their status updates or status updates they've commented on.

With all content types there are some that don't get a response.  Since status updates are used less currently than other content types the percentage of unanswered is higher than discussions or blogs but may be similar to polls, documents, events, etc.

Most of the status updates have received 3-13 responses.  Some have received less.

Well I'm back again still frustrated with the fact that status updates are still not showing as an icon in All Content either on a member's page:

It shows Blogs Posts, Documents Discussions, Questions - Nowhere to be found is Status Updates.

Example:

Or on the ALL CONTENT page of the main site:  https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/content?sortKey=all~creationDateDesc&sortOrder=0

Suggestion:  since status updates aren't showing in Content and it's apparent that Jive won't eliminate the topic, might some kind of pop-up notification be added when a member chooses to do a status update that states "Hey, guess what!  Nobody will see your content, put up a blog or conversation instead!" Obviously I'm making a joke, but missing a new member's post because it isn't anywhere equally noticeable as a blog or a discussion - is a major problem, still.

Better suggestion:

We activated the Status updates because of the wall post functionality not existing on this software and so that we could migrate the wall posts from Elgg to Jive.  Also it was a desired functionality to have semi private interaction style  on the new platform and that was the closes functionality to wall posting.

Now that you've migrated all the wall posts from Ellgg, perhaps you might consider DE-activating Status updates.  MOO (My Opinion Only).  I don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but I don't see too many members posting status updates and getting a great deal of community support through that venue in comparison with Blogs or Conversations.

Giulia

We'll revisit the topic internally. I'm curious for the new people who have posted status updates recently, if they would have still posted if discussion/blog were their only options? In capturing feedback previously some had told us that discussions and blogs were a bit overwhelming out of the gate but that questions were fine as long as they had a specific question in mind.

You can see the recent status updates here: https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/people/Redraycraft/activity?filter=statusupdates under the Activity Tab.  Status Updates weren't originally part of the platform when I started using it in late 2008. Since status updates are more lightweight and temporary I gather they were added to activity for this reason versus being a core content component on the All Content Tab.  Just my guess though. This is also somewhat evidenced by the fact that they appear on the recent content widget when posted but don't come back when they're commented on.
