Give and get support around quitting

Am I doing this right?

I've been looking around here, and realize I know nothing. I haven't done research, I don't think I have a Quit Kit, and I'm scared to death.

I'm quitting because of brutal coughing fits, and a few other reasons like money, freedom, smell, and general health.

I'm starting patches today, right after I finish the 5 and a half cigs I have left (I already spent the money on them, can't bring myself to waste them)

Hello, It is okay to be scared as long as you do not allow the fear to sop you in your tracks you have to keep moving forward and not looking back.  Can you do that. Sure you can because quitting is doable.  If you educate yourself about nicotine addiction.. The best way to quit is to prepare and plan how you are going to go about your quit. My EX Plan | BecomeAnEX  and review the videos and tracking also learn what your triggers are so you can better prepare for the urge to smoke when it happens.  I am a firm believer education is the key to success. I was advised to read Allen Carr's Easyway to Quit Smoking which can be found on pdf on the web.  Another good site to get info which was very helpful to me is  www.whyquit.com.  There are several articles to read.  Nicotine 101 and Freedom From Nicotine My Journey Home.  To get help on navigating the site go to. Community Help‌.  Make quitting smoking your number one priority. Start by getting rid of anything associated with smoking such as ashtrays, lighter, cigarettes, etc.  You can do this if you make up your mind that you can.  Relearning your thinking that you do not have to smoke is a good beginning. For a while, you will think about smoking but that does not mean you have to act on it.  You can talk yourself out of smoking.  No matter what never ever take another puff.  NOPE.  Take smoking off the table as an option and do something different. 101 Things to Do Instead of Smoke SINAO smoking is not an option.  That is NOPE concept Not one puff ever. Be willing to do the work.  Quitting is the easy part.  Staying quit is work.  Learning to protect your quit will keep on your journey forever freedom. One day at a time.  Never give up, never give in. Hang tough Stay Close. Bookend your days here.

We all knew nothing about quitting (except for failure at it - most of us have tried to quit numerous times) until we did our homework.  And it seems that you already have begun since you're aware of a thing called a Quit Kit aka Tool Box .  Education, research, will help strengthen your journey.  We were all scared.  It's a major change in our lives.  And change is scary.  But you want to stop those coughing fits, right?  Maybe those are a little scarier?  They certainly are uncomfortable.  Quitting is uncomfortable.  The discomfort of quitting passes with time.  Not so of the discomfort of coughing if you continue to smoke.  So this is a good decision you've made.  I understand that you don't want to "waste" your money by throwing out those remaining cigarettes.  I smoked up the rest of my entire pack (practically chain smoking) the night before I quit.  But I also understand what sweetplt said about that being an excuse.  When you've made the decision to quit, you're done.  You will read blogs of those who blew their quits, had a puff, and then soaked the entire rest of the pack under water and got right back to their quit.  They had an excuse for the puff, but they doused it immediately by destroying the rest of the pack.  If they had said, "Well I bought the pack, I don't want to waste my money..." they would have compounded the excuse and smoked another 19.  And compounding excuses just leads to more relapses.  One of the things we try to teach here is how to change our thinking.

So - have you set today as your quit day?  If so, have you given any thought to how you will combat the cravings?  If not (or even if so), read the suggested blogs that others have given you links to.  That's the right way to go about this journey.  Stay in contact here and read and read and read.

There is no wrong way to quit smoking EXCEPT to continue smoking!

And there is never a bad day to quit.

That being said, reading and education is the key to success in beating addiction. You have to know the enemy to conquer them.

WELCOME TO EX! We are all here for each other.

Stay Strong.

Welcome to EX!  The best support you'll ever get to help you quit smoking is the thousands of strangers here that love each other, support each other, have and are going through all the same things you have/will struggle with and the occasional kick in the butt to keep on track.  Read, watch, listen, ask, blog, complain, etc.  No matter what, we will have your back and help guide you through. YOU CAN QUIT!

Welcome to our community!

Most of us were scared to quit - afraid of failure, afraid of withdrawal, afraid, afraid.   Those of us lucky enough to find this site ahead of time, and doing the recommended reading, preparation and planning had an easier time of it.  Some have even gotten excited at the concept of being free from addiction.  Please spend some time doing the recommended reading and you might just become one of them!

The important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This is an easy and entertaining read. You can search for it online or at your local library. If you do nothing else to get ready for your quit, please do give this a read.

You should also read the posts here and perhaps go to the pages of folks who you think might be helpful. You might visit whyquit.com, quitsmoking.com and livewell.com for the good information contained there. @https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex has lots of blogs written by members of this site with their experiences and guidance. Here is a video to inform you further about nicotine addiction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpWMgPHn0Lo&feature=youtu.be.

It will be informative if you do the tracking and separation exercises recommended here on the site. As you track each cigarette smoked, note its importance, and what you might do instead. Put each one off just a little to prove that you don't NEED a cigarette just because you think you do.

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand in a place different from when you smoked. Maybe switch to tea for a bit.  If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different. Buy your gas at a different station. Take a different route to work. Take a quick walk at break time where the smokers AREN'T.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Keep a cold bottle of water with you from which to sip. Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:
 https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/blogs/Youngatheart.7.4.12-blog/2013/02/25/100-things-to-do-instea...
The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

Stay close to us here and ask questions when you have them and for support when you need it. We will be with you every step of the way!
