Give and get support around quitting

Today is the day!

I started Chantix 3 weeks ago. The last 5 days I have smoked one cigarette each day 2 puffs at morning, 2 at lunch and 2 before bed. I cut this back yesterday to 1 puff 3 times a day. I woke up this morning and decided to see if I could make it to lunch. Lunch came and went with no cigarette. I decided no more. I will continue taking the Chantix for at least one more month. I feel good, but anxious. I just wish I had someone to chat with that really understands.

You came to the right place to chat.  We've got loads of information about quitting and this is one big chat room.   Congratulations on your quit today.  Your anxiousness may be your excitement to your new journey without cigarettes.  We've all been at this beginning where you are today.  We really understand.

To curb some of that anxiousness you could walk or do chair aerobics??  Get your heart rate up??   Do drink a tall glass of cool water should you come across a crave for a cigarette.  It'll help.

Magnolialane We DO understand...the mantra I used when I first came here was NOPE, Not One Puff Ever because this is an addiction and if you feed it...it just gets stronger.  I also used a couple of other sayings I got from here, "I don't do that anymore." from JonesCarpeDiem‌ and "One step, and then another, will get you to where you want to be."  I read blogs and commented, I watched what was working for others, I paid attention to the advice given to me.  I recommend reading two blogs by JonesCarpeDiem‌ My Welcome To New Members (12+ Years Of Watching)  and /blogs/jonescarp.aka.dale.Jan_2007-blog/2011/06/26/what-to-expect-in-the-first-four-months We have all been at the beginning and we all want you to succeed.

Welcome to EX,

Ellen

You've probably been in constant withdrawal since you cut back. You aren't getting enough nicotine to feed the addiction. No need to cling to those 2 puffs 3 x's a day if you're getting so little nicotine.

Cut a plastic straw into thirds and fiddle with that with your tongue, chew on it.

It will all work out.

Time is the healer.

Welcome to our community!

We have been where you are, gone through what you are and will go through and we certainly understand and will be here for you !  Blog as often as you need to - just to talk about your journey, when you have a question, or just need support.  Understanding what you are going through is a big part of a successful quit.  Read all you can; I will give you lots of that, and it ALL helped me to be successful.

The important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This is an easy and entertaining read. You can search for it online or at your local library. Here's a link to a video here on the site which describes nicotine addiction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpWMgPHn0Lo&feature=youtu.be.

You should also read the posts here and perhaps go to the pages of folks who you think might be helpful. You might visit whyquit.com, quitsmoking.com and livewell.com for the good information contained there. @https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/groups/best-of-ex has lots of blogs written by members of this site with their experiences and guidance

The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand in a place different from when you smoked. Maybe switch to tea for a bit.  If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different. Buy your gas at a different station. Take a different route to work. Take a quick walk at break time where the smokers AREN'T.

You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Keep a cold bottle of water with you from which to sip. Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:

 https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/blogs/Youngatheart.7.4.12-blog/2013/02/25/100-things-to-do-instea...

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

Stay close to us here and ask questions when you have them and for support when you need it. We will be with you every step of the way!

We UNDERSTAND!  We know EXACTLY what you're going through and what it fees like.  Welcome.  You're  not alone.  Pay really good attention to the advice offered here.  Especially if it's coming from members with quit time under their belts.  Do your homework.  No slacking now. (grin)  Education about this addiction is what will set you free from it.

You don't need any more puffs.  Let's 'em go.  You're just a puff away from freedom.
