When will I, or will I, ever stop thinking of smoking?

Day 16.  Feel great. But all I think about is smoking.   Will it ever be out of my mind?  Will it ever be a thing of the past?  Will there ever be a morning when I wake, take in that first sip of coffee, and not desire a smoke???

Congratulations on your decision to quit smoking and your first 16 days!

To answer your question,"YES!"  But (and you knew there was going to be a but, didn't you?) it will take some time, and patience and even some effort on your part to get there.  This is a two pronged addiction - physical AND psychological.  The physical addiction takes a few weeks to get beyond, but you have built up many associations with situations/emotions/daily life that must be relearned, and this part of the addiction takes much longer to relearn.

The important thing you can do right now is to educate yourself on what nicotine does to your body and mind. To that end, I highly recommend Allen Carr's “The Easy Way to Stop Smoking.” This is an easy and entertaining read. You can search for it online or at your local library. The idea is to change up your routines so the smoking associations are reduced.  Drink your coffee with your OTHER hand in a place different from when you smoked. Maybe switch to tea for a bit.  If you always had that first smoke with your coffee, try putting your tennies on right out of bed, going for a quick walk, then taking your shower and THEN your coffee! Rearrange the furniture in the areas you used to smoke so the view is different. Buy your gas at a different station. Take a different route to work. Take a quick walk at break time where the smokers AREN'T.  The better you get at this, the quicker the morning/afternoon or evening will come when you realize you didn't think about smoking.
 
You need to distract yourself through any craves.  You can take a bite out of a lemon (yup - rind and all), put your head in the freezer and take a deep breath of cold air, do a few jumping jacks, go for a brisk walk or march in place, play a computer game.  Keep a cold bottle of water with you from which to sip. Don't let that smoking thought rattle around in your brain unchallenged. Sometimes you need to quit a minute or an hour at a time.  You will need to be disciplined in the early days to distract yourself when a crave hits.    Get busy!  Here is a link to a list of things to do instead of smoke if you need some fresh ideas:

The conversation in your head in response to the "I want a cigarette" thought needs to be, "Well, since I have decided not to do that anymore, what shall I do instead for the three minutes this crave will last?"  Then DO it.  You will need to put some effort into this in the early days, but it gets easier and easier to do.

I like how you started your blog with "feel great"! That's a great attitude to have in the beginnings of a quit! Welcome and CONGRATULATIONS on 16 days!! The short answer to your question is YES. There does come a time when you don't think about smoking. Those thoughts will slowly fade into oblivion and then there will be peace. It takes a little time, but it's a fight worth doing.

 So many of us here are happily enjoying our hard earned freedom right now! That will be you so long as you stay true to yourself and let me tell you, it's worth the effort!

Yes; yes; and yes.  It takes time to get it out of your mind.  It took a long time for you to keep it in the forefront of your thoughts, so it will take some time to get it out of your mind.  The longer you think about smoking though, the longer it is going to stay with you.  You have to practice thinking other thoughts, stopping the bad thought when you feel it coming on, and change direction by keeping yourself busy with something else.  One day you will forget you even thought about smoking, or you will think about it, and smile with pride, because you just don't do that anymore!

Congratulations on 16 days of freedom Sure the thoughts of smoking will subside after time.  The ideas is to take one day at a time and know that just because you think of smoking does not mean you have to act upon it.  It is just a thought and that is all that it is.  It will take time and learning to do other things to distract the thoughts when they come. NOPE will keep you free no matter what is happening in your life.

The answer to all your questions is a resounding YES!  It's incremental.  First there's the moment when you realize you haven't thought about smoking first thing in the morning.  Then it expands and you have a whole day where you're not thinking about cigarettes.  Until you see a butt on the ground.  I remember I was so furious when I was happily going about my day without dwelling on smoking and then I saw a butt.  Zing!  Right back into cigarette-thinking mode.  Then that magnificent day when I looked at people smoking and didn't want one.  And then the day I felt sorry for them.  

Time away from our smoking selves is the cure.  It takes a while to forget.  Please trust us.  You will not crave forever.

Thank you all for the encouraging replies.  I believe I asked IF or WHEN thinking about smoking disappears and now I realize, after all you've written,  that I really meant CRAVINGS.  Once those damn cravings at those damn times are gone or I've changed up my habits to fool those cravings THEN the thoughts disappear and I can reach day 1 of no thoughts.   I'm on day 16 of no physical cigarettes,  and today I'm still awaiting that elusive day 1 of no cravings or thoughts.  Maybe next month. Maybe next year.  Who knows when that 1st day will come, but fir damn sure it'll come.  There's no turning back.  Much more to win!!  I win be an EX.

Love your attitude.  It will get you there.  I'm late to the conversation anf only 83 days quit, but I can tell you it does start diminishing.  Giulia put it to me this way once and it really helped.  At fist you think about it all the time.  Then most of the time, then some of the time, then just once in awhile.  I've found this is a pretty true analogy.  Good job so far.!!!
