Hi andrew,  nicotine is a powerful powerful drug and you are an addict, and you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms, which is good because it means that nicotine is leaving your body nd you will be starting the healing process. Unless you put every thing you have into this quit smoking cigarettes will make you unhappy for the rest of your life and probably kill you. There it is, simple as that. but the devil is in the details.  You did the right thing by coming to this site. There is lots and lots of information here. Lots and tons of super solid support from people who have moved heaven and hell to get rid of this horrid addiction. This site is the single most important support I have and had in my struggle to quit.  Today is day 98 for me. And yes, the first 3 days are no fun.  Well..... welcome.  go to your profile page and set up your stats.  I like looking at my stats.  I have avoided smoking over 3 thousand cigarettes since I quit March 16, 2018. Just thinking of smoking 3 thousand cigarettes, my poor lungs.  My lungs are happy.  Yours can be too.  Start  exploring this site. There is much help here for you.  You are doing the right thing.  It does get easier.

Welcome to the Ex. Andrew.  It normally takes 3 days for the nicotine to be out of your system, so think positive.  Today is your day 3!   It's normal what your feeling right now, but it probably would be difficult for someone else to understand how on edge you are right now.  You not only have the physical withdrawal, but the psychological withdrawal to work through  Be patient with yourself.  This to will pass-- it won't be easy, but it will get easier.  Have you planned for your quit and read the material on this site?  There is a lot of information and great people to help get you through.  Anytime you need help, reach out.  Today is day 103 for me, so I'm fairly new myself.   Do something active and take deep breathes, it really does help to calm yourself down.

Hello Andrew, Congrats on 3 days smoke-free.  The nicotine is coming out of your system if you are not using NRT's.  Good Job, welcome to Ex.  Quitting smoking is one of the hardest things we have to do but it is doable It will test your emotions to the fullest.  The main thing is to prepare for those times by educating yourself on nicotine addiction and ways to distract.   If your wife has never smoked she may not fully understand what you are going through. You may want to explain to her that you may be a little testy so forgive me.  You do have to be kind to her and yourself while going through this withdrawal.  Find things that will occupy your time and mind.  You will find that smoking took a lot of it.  It is a joy to be able to be smoke-free.  Embrace it.  Don't fight it.  Learn to breathe through the crisis.  Quitting smoking is about deprogramming the brain that you do not have to smoke.  Here is a simple one to start, when the urge hits tell yourself that you "don't do that anymore".  Stay close, read study blog ask questions.  Here is some reading to help you get started. Go to My EX Plan | BecomeAnEX  click on the tabs and read and watch the videos.  Also, check out www.whyquit.com and read Nicotine 101 and My Journey to Freedom Home. The best is yet to come.  Hang tough, stay close. Enjoy your new life.

You might try asking your wife to read this blog by Dr. Hays...https://excommunity.becomeanex.org/community/expert-advice/blog/2017/02/02/what-you-can-do-to-show-s...  The sad fact is that people who have never experienced addiction do not know what withdrawal is like...welcome to EX...quitting is a journey and not an event, it is one day at a time and you may very well be irritable, impatient, and emotional as the nicotine leaves your body and then as you begin to realize that you need to replace smoking with POSITIVE actions.  I suggest that you read a blog written by JonesCarpeDiem‌ that I found particularly helpful.../blogs/jonescarp.aka.dale.Jan_2007-blog/2011/06/26/what-to-expect-in-the-first-four-months  You might also find this one written by YoungAtHeart‌ to offer you things to do other than smoke.../blogs/Youngatheart.7.4.12-blog/2013/02/25/100-things-to-do-instead-of-smoke   This is one day at a time, sometimes one hour or one minute at a time.  It is worth all of the angst you are feeling.  My mantra when I started here was NOPE, Not One Puff Ever and I said it over and over and over again...sometimes silently or softly, sometimes out loud...sometimes I yelled it when I was alone.  Stay close to this site and read as many blogs as you can, comment, get to know members, and know that we have all been where you are.  There are no shortcuts to recovery..."The only way out is through."  My favorite saying from this site is from OldBones-Larry‌ "One step and then another, will get you to where you want to be."  Remember that smokers don't really smoke because they WANT to, they smoke because they HAVE to.

Welcome to EX,

Ellen
