I'm craving a cigarette

Today is the first day of me stopping. I want to smoke so bad, because I'm bored. So is there any advice on what I should do for the cravings?

Make it your job to stay busy with anything other than smoking. If you have decided to quit, then be proud for your first day. Then on to the next.

Why are you bored?  Is there nothing in the world to engage your mind that you find interesting, intriguing?  If boredom is a major trigger for you, then part of your homework is to come up with things to do or think about that excite those synapses.  Getting up and out of wherever you are will help.  Do you do any sports?  Bike ride?  Shoot baskets?  Go around and take pictures of something with your cell phone.  Change your scenery.  Put on some wild music and dance your crave away.  Don't just sit there and dwell on smoking.  You'll drown.

Remember that no crave ever killed anyone and NO ONE can say that about smoking.  Stay in the moment, remember this is a journey and it cannot be rushed, there are no short cuts.  You CAN do this.  I drank a LOT of very cold water, you can blow bubbles, exercise, play games on line, watch funny movies.  Keep reminding yourself of why you want to quit and STAY quit.

Welcome to EX.

All of the above, and also:

Organize a closet or a pantry

Clear clutter in your storage area (basement, garage, etc.)

Yard work on nice days

Walk the dogs (If you don't have dogs, offer walking services to the local humane society.)

Do 5 -to-15 minutes of stretches (many free videos on YouTube)

Sip ice-cold water

Call a family member or friend you haven't spoken to in a while

Lift weights for a few minutes, if you have hand-weights at home

The best advice you got here to so far is to plan for these periods of boredom, just as you plan for triggers. Literally write it out and revisit what you've written. Include planning for stressful times, too. A good plan will take you far!

I'm new at this, too. 28 days, I think. I don't know much, but I do know it'll be SO worth it to have a plan that works for you. Get to day three or four, then tell us--how do you feel? I was blown away by how much easier it was to breathe almost within the first 24 hours. It's truly remarkable. It was what motivated me to keep going during that first, hard week.

I'm rooting for you!

I cannot advise you, but I tried to sleep the first three days, yes all of it. pretty hard if your working. try this. if ther is something in it you don't like, just note that you do not like it and carry on, don't throw out the baby with the bath water. get a pillow under your head, and a comfy blanket, you are healing. you have been injured by cigarettes, you need to heal. A guided meditation you do lying down. - YouTube    if you are not asleep after that try this.  don't try to stay awake. Hypnosis to quit smoking mindfully - YouTube   your body is starting to go through detox.  drink tons and tons and tons of water.  I will keep an eye on you.  post here. stick close, you will get lots of support here.  We are all addicts. and we want you to quit.Image result for quit smoking addict quotes

Hi Truztie11.  Just read you post.  Boredom definitely increases thoughts, urges, and cravings to smoke, so get engaged in something when this happens.  I am moving to day three, but had a prior quit and found that when I actually got up and moved (regardless of what I went to do) my mind started going in a different direction.  For example, if I was in my office and an urge came on while I was reading (which is one of my enjoyable activities) I would go up to the kitchen to see if I needed to straighten something or I would go to the bathroom.  One thing that always helped me was using a hand lotion (I love Jergens Original scent).  One reason I wanted to quit (not the top priority) was that I hated the smell cigarettes left on my hands.  Every time I use the lotion I put my hands to my nose and enjoy the clean smell.  Find something that works for you and then keep doing it.
