NML & In-Betweener Weekly Check In – 11/22/2017 – Thanksgiving

I am combining the check ins this week because anyone in NML and anyone who is not yet in the 6% club has not gone through a Thanksgiving holiday as an ex-smoker…..until now!

This week’s topic: Holiday Triggers

What makes you crave a cigarette?  Is it a cup of coffee? A drink?  Talking on the phone?  To quit smoking forever you should identify your smoking triggers.  Every year the holidays arrive.  Now that you have gotten your first (or more) month(s) under your belt, avoiding holiday relapse triggers can seem daunting.  Have you thought about holiday triggers?  Why not share your potential holiday triggers?  There may be a trigger that one of your fellow NMLers didn’t think of until you posted about it.  Maybe someone has a similar experience.

In No Man’s Land, you’ve come a long way, but still have a long way to go. The routine cravings are gone but the surprise cravings can knock you to your knees. Your family and friends think you should be “over it” while you still feel quite fragile sometimes. Your relationships with smoking friends/family may be feeling strained. Your inner junkie is still around, still whispering to you, and the temptation to give in can be every bit as strong as it was in your first few days.

But here’s the good news. In these same 100 days, for most people, your circulation has improved substantially, walking has become easier, and your overall lung function has increased noticeably. Sinus congestion, fatigue, and shortness of breath have decreased. Your body's overall energy has increased. The roller coaster is smoothing out, and you are feeling calmer and stronger overall. Good things are happening! (Courtesy of @sarahP)

Checking in here will help you get through NML and on your way to the first year where you can celebrate being in the 6% Club and graduate to eventually become an Elder!

Please let me know if you are interested in posting the NML Weekly Check In.  I am happy to continue it, share it, or pass it to the nEXt EXer in NML who is ready, willing, and able.

I don't give up easily so I am commenting so this post gets bumped up!  Let's hear from our NMLers and In-betweeners!  I am honestly not too worried about this holiday season since most people I know don't smoke so it actually makes it EASIER for me this year vs. having to sneak away and stand in the freezing cold to have a sickarette!

I'm here, I'm here!  I am very fortunate not to have to worry about Thanksgiving or Christmas.  No one in my family has smoked for years, so I don't have any smoking memories on those days.  The Fourth of July was nearly unbearable for me though!  I usually had more cigarettes than normal since I was outside so much that day.  Last July, I skipped 2 parties that I always go to, and took a long afternoon nap.

I have sort of been dreading this holiday season though, because I'm afraid we will lose some of our members, and that always makes me very sad .  So listen up people!!!  Don't be thinking only of yourself if the urge hits.  Not only will you be sorry the next day, you will make Tom sad!  Think of the guilty conscience that will give you!

roller831‌ Powerful blog and really timely.  I have known for a long time that my reward trigger was a strong one, I did NOT know that it was still lingering in my brain.  I have been crazy busy trying to clean and get stuffing made for tomorrow...I have been going and going all day with the exception of some short breaks to get on here and check my inbox.  When I finally surrendered to my fatigue and pain...what HORRIBLE thought should appear?  Yep...there is was, I could step outside for a minute.  I almost SLAPPED myself...yeah, I might trip over the oxygen concentrator or have to use my rescue inhaler yet another time today.  I was talking to my oldest daughter on the phone and walking around trying to get things done when I realized how short of breath I was.  She asked, "Mom, are you alright?"  No, I sure wasn't.  I can't walk and talk at the same time...seriously, my oxygen saturation tanks and I HAVE to rest.  It is so hard to think that I did this to myself...PLEASE hang onto your quits, you do NOT want this to be you.

Love and Happy Thanksgiving...be thankful for your quit and for EX,

Ellen

I made it through Halloween without smoking but the trigger was pulled and remained pulled for about a week later.  It wasn't until the day after Halloween, I realized I was triggered.  It was a wake-up call and a reminder I was entering a series of "firsts" and I would more than likely get triggered. Lo and behold, the series of "firsts" got kicked into gear when I began winterizing my home last weekend.  Last year, I was taking smoke breaks in between winterizing chores.  Tomorrow, I'm prepared to be triggered.  It won't hit me until I'm heading home because that's when I would smoke - driving home after an evening of food, family and alcohol. I figure I made it through Halloween there's no reason I can't make it through Thanksgiving. I'll remind myself this year I'm thankful for 144 days of freedom.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I survived Thanksgiving and the weekend with minimal triggers. I think the trigger of Halloween was still pulled so I didn't notice a big difference. I'm "mentally" aware this is my first holiday season without smoking but the days aren't any different then the previous days. I haven't experienced any major triggers or anything I haven't handled before.

Good for you, TurboRose‌ Michele!  OldBones-Larry‌ says, one step and then another will get you where you want to be.  It seems like you are making it through a couple of hurdles and acknowledging even though it may be a holiday, the day itself is no different.  I like that way of thinking!  Keep up the great work!
