Let's Get Moving Challenge

Jump to solution

Today is a happy day darn it!   I've been smoke free for 38 days today.  I've been on my pity potty just moping around.  I get home from work and lay down and watch television all night.  I sleep the weekend away.   I have no interest in doing anything at all.  Sometimes I don't even want to leave the office because there's nothing to look forward to when I get home.  (I used to sit on my beautiful deck and have a wonderful glass of red wine with my smokes, before I start dinner).  Not anymore.  It's the depression I experience ever time I quit.   For those of you who don't know me, I've quit many times (one time for four years!)  It's like there is simply no more enjoyment in life.  I can't enjoy a glass of wine because it is my number one trigger -- alcohol.  I've learned that lesson  more than once.   I'm far from an alcoholic, but I do enjoy going out and having a few drinks on occasion (in addition to my glass or two of red when I get home).  I haven't had a drink since my quit date of May 1, 2017.   BLAH, BLAH, BLAH...

BUT NOT THIS TIME!!!!!  No, no, no.  This time I'm going to do something different.  I refuse to go down the same road.  What's that famous saying by Einstein?  "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result?"  Well, insanity no more my friends.  I've decided to get off my couch and get my lazy butt moving.  This weekend I'm going to start living an active lifestyle.  I used to enjoy hiking, biking and kayaking and I do none of it anymore.  Everybody says that one of the best things for depression is getting outside and exercising.  Spring and sprung and there is no better time than now to start this challenge.

I'm looking for fellow Ex'ers to join me in my activity challenge.    I'm calling it the "Let's Get Moving" Challenge because I hate the word exercise.  Not only do I hate the word, I hate actually exercising.  LOL.  But really, all joking aside, I really do hate it.  But, I know it's the best thing for me.  I don't want to fail again.  I will fail if I don't try something different to get me out of this funk.

So, I challenge all of you to join me.  I'm going to try to "get moving" at least 4 times a week.  I'll stay accountable to all of you, which in turn will make me accountable to myself.  I promise to post my accomplishments and I welcome you to do the same.  Now that it should be easier for us to breathe, whadda-ya-say?  Do you want to take this journey with me?  Any activity counts, as long as you get off your butt and get your heart pumping.  Who knows, maybe we'll lose a little weight or a couple of inches in the meantime.

I am on crutches with a broken leg, and still register 2+ miles on my Fitbit most days.  I live alone, and taking care of myself gives me that many without even working at it!!!

I have been given permission to water walk at the end of next week ---- can't WAIT.  I actually LOVE to exercise, primarily swimming laps.  Watch out --- you might just become addicted to the high of IT!  I know I am once I get started!!!

You will notice an improvement in your mood immediately - I guarantee it.

GREAT job making the decision to change things up!

Moving can become addictive.  Just do it.  I am going to take a walk what are you going to do? When I come back I will have one down.

Great thinking! I have a water exercise class 3 days a week and then walk 2-3 days. When I first quit, I could barely walk half a mile and now I easily walk 4 miles at a time. So - way to go on challenging yourself! And - congrats on your quit!

I also hate the word exercise.  It seems like such a waste of good calories.  I spend good money at the grocery store for these calories, and then I am suppose to just burn them off engaging in unnecessary activities?  Its like going to get your car filled with gas and just leaving it running so it will "get into shape."

Just doesn't make sense to me....

Congratulations on you 38 days of freedom.  Good for you not letting that depression get the best of you. Changing the way you quit this time is good thinking.  Walking in the beginning of my quit was what really helped me stay quit. In the beginning I could barely walk a 1/2 of a block and before my hand injury I was up to walking 2-3 miles a day  Just now I got released back to my regular activities which includes water aerobics 2x a week and 3 days walking and 2 days strength training.  You can do this moving thing and I am in on this get moving challenge.  You will feel so much better.  Today I did water aerobics, also 1 hour lazy river walk and strength training class.

jdesco311‌ Congratulations on your 38 days.  I work out in a pool when I can, next week, I am seeing a physical therapist to find out what exercises are the best for me, given my back issues and my breathing issues.  I am looking forward to it. I used to work out every day with weights but that has gone by the wayside, I also had a stationary bike but I cannot use it because of my back so I am trying to find the best ways to stay active.  I like the four days a week thing and, by God, I will do whatever I can and I will absolutely get moving even if I have to use a walker to do it!  Thanks for the challenge.

10,000 steps a day for me! No, gregp136‌ not to burn calories but to earn dopamine! It's a great depression fighter! Let's get moving and keep moving and leave depression behind!
