Pulmonary Rehab - Week 1

This week I learned a lot about COPD that I had misconceptions of. COPD isn't one size fits all. Every single one of us has a different mix of any number of upper respiratory conditions which provoke each other. Yes, I have chronic bronchitis. Yes, I have emphysema. But I have a whole lot else going on and the good news is that many of those things are treatable! For EXample, I have asthma. Never knew that until just a few Months ago! I have allergies. Doctors hear you have COPD and toss you a prescription for Prednisone(steroid) and Z-pac (antibiotic) whether it addresses your symptoms or not! Be very careful, folks! Your run of the mill doctor doesn't understand and doesn't want to bother understanding COPD! It's too complicated and takes too much of their time!

I also learned a lot about EXercise I didn't know I don't have to bulk up like Arnold Schwarzenegger or run a marathom to benefit from fitness! It's not strength or speed that counts as much as endurance. Doing 3 ten minute walks still counts if I don't have a half hour block! Aerobics is good IF and only if your Oxygenation doesn't drop below 90%.

More good news on my own personal front is that I don't trap old air as badly as most because I practice pursed lip breathing and belly breathing my lungs are not too heavy. That makes everything better! What I do have to watch very carefully is my pH balance! Very important! You get that from the DLCO I'll clarify that once I understand it more.

Pilates is good, Zumba is good. Swimming is good.

Nutrition makes a huge impact Good nutrition leads not only to a healthy BMI. It helps you maintain metabolism. It ensures you get enough protein. And it helps protect you from lung cancer. You feel better and live better.

I also had an EEG which not surprising showed depression and anxiety! I could have told them that! But it was validating that there really is something going on in my Brain and best of all, it can be addressed!

For one Week's work - not too shabby, I'd say! Hopefully, I can update you as I go along!

Meanwhile, and most important of all - Keep 'em away from your face!

I share your chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthma. I have been exercising an hour and a half, 3 times a week, on special tables that keep my lungs in good condition and are recommended for COPD sufferers. Have to wait a month to go back. Thanks, Thomas, for your continuing contributions on COPD!!
