THERE'S A HOLE IN MY SIDEWALK By Portia Nelson

Chapter One
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost .... I am helpless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

Chapter Two
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend that I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I am in this same place.
But, it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

Chapter Three
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in ... it's a habit ... but, my eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

Chapter Four
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

Chapter Five
I walk down another street.

I was walking down the same street and saw the deep hole in the sidewalk, just under an hour ago. I have been on the street recently and I know where the hole is, but I had been walking around it, finding other routes. Today, though, when I saw the hole I wanted to jump in it. My mind was telling me how much I liked being in the dark hole, how I enjoyed the solitude there, how I liked the darkness. But then, I snap out of the delusional thoughts and come back to the truth: I like walking down the street on the sidewalk, aware of my environment, avoiding pitholes that I pass, even finding other streets to get where I'm going.  I remember that as I walk must keep in mind my mantra: NOT ONE PUFF EVER

A wise man once told me "if you keep trying the same old thing and keep getting the same old results, it time to try something different to get a new result."
