Follow: Save a list of "People You Follow"

The list of People You Follow (Following) who do not also Follow You (Followers) cannot be moved to the new community*. Here’s what you need to do if you want to recreate that list in the new community platform:

  • Visit the community on a computer .
  • Click your Circle Avatar image in the upper right of the community
  • Click View Profile in the dropdown
  • Click More between Content and Actions
  • Click People
  • Save each person you wish to retain from the Following tab.
    • As a Bookmark in your web browser
    • In a file to your computer or the cloud
      • Copy and Paste each username individually to a Google Document, Excel Spreadsheet, Microsoft Word or WordPad document on your computer

* Anyone you currently follow who also follows you we anticipate will be moved to the community

Below is an animation using Mozilla Firefox that shows saving users as Bookmarks and also in a WordPad text file.

It was somewhat helpful.  I was able to follow the animation until it got to the point of saving, then it went so fast I couldn't pick it up.

Will we need to each follow one another in order to be able to communicate privately (e.g. send a message or PMs) on the new platform?  Will that feature (PMs) even be available at all?  If we aren't following now, will we be able to find a person on the new platform and then follow them?  If someone currently has hundreds of followers, it would take a LONG time to copy the URL for each or add a bookmark.

I'm not sure I understand either!

Me either, this sounds really complicated.

Mark I was able to follow your instructions. Copying and pasting each person works just fine . (I didn't try bookmarking)   It is time consuming.  I recommend it's a good time to review who you're following.  Some of these folks never stayed, so I removed them yesterday before I started copying.  Just give it a try!

I recommend looking at the text directions for now. I'll try to re-record and slow it down more.

Probably not unless we see an issue with people using PMs to send spam. Though you will be able to now report Spam via PM.

Yes, PMs will be available.

Following ≠ Friends
Following: Subscribing to activity from a user

Friends: Addressbook of people you want quick access to to send PMs

If you currently follow each other we anticipate you'll see those users automatically in your Friends list after the move. People who you follow but don't follow you back will not appear in your Friends list. So this is an opportunity to copy that list so that you can reference it to look people up after the move.  Unfortunately there is no quick way to see the people who you follow and who follow you back*. There are probably some people who you follow that you'll want to trim from your list so this might be a good opportunity to do so. Looks like you follow 224 and are followed by 642Skimming through and copying just the people you want to carry forward might be a quicker way to do it.

Yes you should be able to search for them and then ask to be Friends after the migration from your list of people who won't become friends automatically in the move..

*If you know MS Excel or Google Sheets you could possibly do a compare for your Following and Followers list to see how they're different and then you'll know which one's will show in your Friends list and which ones will not.

Glad it worked. Tried to keep those directions as simple as possible. Yes, hopefully the text instructions get you there and hopefully you'll trim your list with starting now.

Thank you.  What you said is quite clear.  Following is not the same as Friends on the new platform.  Ergo you can follow without being friends and you can be friends without following.  Nice to know we will still be able to communicate privately.  Sometimes strong friendships are formed that way here.
