Does anyone besides me remember some of the cyber food orgies we used to have on here? When we would each talk about the decadent and delicious things we were craving (and, alas, eating)? Some of the Exes even posted pictures! Oh, what fun/torture.
One of the things I remember was a certain Canadian was talking about Nanaimo bars. I had never even heard the name. Her description sounded good enough, but I didn't think about the regional treat much (we have whoopie pies and the best potato chips here in PA, so, no worries) UNTIL. . . last month while paging through a Taste of Home magazine, there is was. A recipe for "chocolaty nanaimo bars". I probably would have paged right past but of course I remember how fondly my Ex friend was of this treat. While I'm sure I could not duplicate the yumminess of a true Pacific Northwest cook or manufacturer, I followed this recipe and the results were fantastic. Everyone at the family picnic on Sunday was swooning and asking for the recipe. I don't dare reproduce it here (respecting copyright laws) but if you get a copy of June/July Taste of Home, you can find it. (Most reputable libraries subscribe, which is how I ended up finding it) or just google nanaimo bars, I guess. Maybe they are available just about anywhere but where I am, and maybe this recipe is not a true duplication, I don't know. But I somehow had managed to live until now without eating one. A mystery, to be sure.
BUT ANYWAY--whatever you do--please try to get your hands on one of these goodies.
