Who are you quitting for?

Posted by pir8fan Jan 22, 2015

Very often when we ask that question, we get the wrong answer! The only correct answer is "Me". About three years ago, our friend Jawidge EXplained this better than most! So tonight I have borrowed his words, and I would like to share them with you!

On January 17, 2012 George said:

...............In my new non-smoking life, I rarely think about smoking anymore, but I do have thoughts and do like to share those thoughts about “THE QUIT”.  This is what I would like to share with you today.

If you are thinking about quitting for a loved one….  Your child, grandchild, significant other, parent, whoever, then I want you to reconsider that.  Don’t get me wrong. It,s not that I think that is an unacceptable gesture, I just don’t know if it is possible.  Why?    Well, there are several reasons that I believe that a successful quit must be for YOU and YOU first and not anyone else.

First of all, one thing you can do with all of these people when the nicodemon strikes really hard and you are thinking about giving in, is you can hide from them.   If you are quitting for yourself, hiding from that person becomes a little more difficult.  No matter how much you may love these people, you have to love yourself just as much or more to have a successful quit.  Besides, they may not fully understand and never thank you for quitting, but I promise you that your body, mind and spirit will thank you over and over and over again!

Secondly, these innocent bystanders in our life have nothing to do with our addiction. They may never personally gain the benefits that we will from this quit, but they will only continue to suffer from our miserable habit until we do quit.  As Exers, we sincerely celebrate our overcoming the addiction and we should.  Our loved ones, I am sure, try to see it as something wonderful, but I can only surmise that they are thinking that we are finally getting around to doing what we should have already done, or never started in the first place.

Finally, I don’t think we can give up smoking for a loved one, because we certainly never smoked a cigarette for them.  Think about it.  I am pretty sure that none of us ever went out in the freezing or rainy night, lit up, and said. “ this one is for little Sarah..  I’m going to smoke this for her and then I am going back in there and breathe this nasty stuff all over her”.   Just doesn’t sound familiar, does it? The smoking is/was a very very selfish habit.   We never smoked a cigarette for ANYONE except our own little addiction. So while it is nice to think of the benefit for others in our quit, we cannot lose sight of how important it is for us, (me and you.) It’s way too important that we DO QUIT, and quit for ourselves, so that others in our life just might enjoy the benefits also........  Just my two cents worth on a Tuesday night.    Have a great smoke free evening.       George

As we sail our ship through the troubled water of life, everyone, and every event, we encounter is either a Sail, or an Anchor! If we are to reach our destination, we must identify each one of these as such. We must choose our Sails well, and run them high upon the mast, to gather the winds of success. We must also cut loose the Anchors. Identify those people, and events, that would drag us down, or hold us back for their own purposes. They are our Anchors!

We must also jetison the dead weight that we are carrying along. The thoughts of inadequacy, and seeds of self doubt, that others have burdened us with, are dead weight. And while this dead weight may not sink your ship, it will make your voyage a longer and harder one!

Keep close watch on your sails! Steer your ship to keep them full of the winds of promise. Beware that some of these sails may fail you! Your most vibrant colored, and strongest sail may fade, and tear away. It may fall useless upon the deck. You may be tempted to keep it, for the good that it has been in the past! Look beyond that temptation. For it will lay there, and rot. It will become more dead weight. Jetison that as well!

Focus on you goal! Keep your Determination at the forefront! For Focus, and Determination are the linchpins of success! So, sail on my Friends! Freedom is not only your destination, it is part of your journey!

As you sail through life, I wish you fair winds, and following seas!           Tommy

That is it! I am leaving!

Posted by pir8fan Jan 9, 2015

For Six Days!!

A few of you know that I have been in a lot of pain for the last several months! I am unable to work, and eating a steady diet of pain killers! The Dr. who is the greatest hope of releiving my pain has not had time to see me! He is finally getting around to me next Friday! So I have decided that if I have to suffer, I will suffer in luxury!

I am leaving tomorrow on a 5 day cruise! I plan to do absolutely nothing and worry about ...............nothing as well! The ship is going to Jamicia, where I will be driven to a private beach! Food and beverages will be served, and I only have to get up and walk out to the water if I want! And, I do want to do that! Emerse myself in the healing tropical waters! The next day will be Grand Cayman, and I have nothing exciting to do there either! Just relax and heal!

I will be back next Thursday afternoon! While I am gone, please be kind to one another! It is quitting season. There are a lot of new people here! If you are an "Elder", please guide them to the knowledge, and give them the support that they need to obtain the Freedom that we enjoy! If you are one of those new people, listen to those who can educate you about our addiction! Reach out for the support that will see you through the rough spots! Never doubt that you have the seeds of success in you! I look forward to returning to see how your quits have bloomed, and watch you reap the rewards of FREEDOM!      Tommy

It is quitting season! That is the time of the year that we take a good look at ourselves and see the need for change! Recognizing that need is step one! Many make a New Year Resolution! And, unfortunately, most of those go the way of most New Year Resolutions!

So, let's get serious here for a couple of minutes! Most quitters fall into two groups! There is the group that wants to quit, and the group that needs to quit! Which group do you identify most with? Guess what? If you think you are in the want to quit group, you are in the need to quit group also!

Where is the idea of quitting born? There are many birth places! "I am quitting for my health", or "I can't afford to smoke anymore" or the always popular "I am doing it for my family"! First, and foremost, you have to do this for yourself! If someone ask you why you quit, the answer is I am doing this for me! The benefits to your health, your pocketbook and your family are the gravy! The things that you probably have not thought about like improved self esteem, and greater confidence are also great advantages that await you!

So, if all of this sounds good the question remains, "How do I do it?". It is simple! Don't smoke! There is no reason, no EXcuse, or no rationalizing! From this point forward you do not put a cigarette in you mouth! I hear you thinking "Yeah, easy enough for you to say, but what about the addiction thing?" My answer is 72! Yep, 72 hours! The nicotine is out of you system! The withdrawal is over! The physical addiction is broken! Three days of discomfort for a lifetime of Freedom! That, my friend is a damn good deal! "But what about the cravings?" Yeah! What about those? Well if the nicotine is out of your system, the craves are not based on addiction. It is just you against your memories of smoking, and the idea that you gave up something! The truth is you gave up nothing! You took back what was naturally yours! Freedom! And, Freedom is good!

Now, Freedom means that you are Free to go about killing yourself in any damnfool way you wish! So, how do you avoid the pitfalls on the road to Freedom? You ride the Freedom Train (Blog) here everyday! Celebrate your milestones! You educate yourself about our addiction! There is a vast storehouse of knowledge among our members, and the pages of this site! Soak it all in! Learn what to EXpect and how to handle it! Then, lean on us for support! There are a lot of us here who have been where you are, and we will help you get where we are!

Remember that we share an addiction! It is not a habit! It is a nasy, stinking, killer addiction, and we are all one puff away from a pack a day! Or two packs! Never take even one single puff! I have made that committment, and if you will make it also, we can join hands and make the journey to Freedom together! Let's get it done!

5 Years of Freedom!

Posted by pir8fan Jan 1, 2015

Let me begin this blog by saying "Thank You" to everyone here! This place is the reason I am still Free! This place in cyberspace where you bring your thoughts, your dreams, your courage, your ambition, your fear, and your hope! This is a cyberplace where we share that which threatens us, that which emboldens us and that which others need to know about! It is a place that I came to in order to vent my anger at being forced to quit smoking! I am sure a number of you remember that! And, you allowed me to get that off my chest! You sat back like wise elders, and smiled. Some doubted my ability to quit! But, most simply waited for the echos of my rants to die, so that I could hear your quiet voices of reason! It took about 40 days! But I did begin to listen! And. I found here the one thing in the world that is more powerful than the fear of quitting! I found the hope for Freedom! And make no mistake Hope is more powerful than fear!

In this cyberplace I found real people! People who had never met me, but wanted for me things that I was not wise enough to want for myself! And with their help I found a new self esteem, a new confidence, and the elation that come from giving back more than you have taken! I found what I called "Collateral Kindness"! Helping yourself by helping others! What a way to quit! What away to live! And most important of all I found Friends! Not just the numbers you add up, and call friends, but people that care about you and are committed to being there for you! Everytime! People who not only wish you well, but will pray for you to do well!

As time passed, I began to meet some of you in person! Dawn was the first! Rest in Peace Sweet Lady! Then Strudel! You know that I love you! Right Kathy? Then Sandy! Then came EX get together in Vegas! Then EX II in Orlando! I can't wait for EX III in Nashville! I want you all to be there! For we are a family!

Who would have thought that My Best Friend in the whole world would be someone I met at a quit smoking site! Sootie! I love you my Friend!

So, once again, to everyone here I want to EXtend a heartfelt Thank You! Whether you were part of my early days here, or you are new here, and the reason I come back everyday! You make me a better person, and you help me stay Free! And, I sincerely hope that everyone of you can enjoy the same Freedom that I live with today! Live Free! Smoke Free!!                  Tommy
