Thank you to all......

Posted by pir8fan Feb 26, 2014

......who wished me well on my vacation! I have returned and look forward to catching up on all that I missed while I was a way!

The Dominican was fantastic! I hope to return soon! The place that I stayed at was top notch. and I had a butler to make sure that I had everything I needed! Even if I did not know that I needed it! I did not catch a billfish! But the fishing was not a total loss!

Sneaking away!

Posted by pir8fan Feb 20, 2014

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that I will be MIA for the next 5 days! I am sneaking off to the Dominican Republic for a litte R&R! I will be at an all-inclusive resort! I will be allowed to play as much golf as I want! But I may not want to play golf at all! I may just kick back and relax! I do intend to go bill fishing at least once! I have never caught a Swordfish or a Sailfish! And I might not ever! But I am going to try at least once!

While I am gone I ask that all of you be good to each other! Remember "Collateral Kindness"! Helping yourself by helping others! What a way to quit! What a way to live!! Have a great weekend!  Tommy

Foolish Thoughts! (repost)

Posted by pir8fan Feb 19, 2014

I do not watch a lot of television! Football and Jeopardy is about it! However, I did see a commercial the other day with a line that made me go "WOW"!

Brian Urlacker and Ray Lewis are future Hall of Fame pro football players who retired last year! They do a commercial together where Urlacker is calling Lewis, on game day, and asking it he is missing playing! Lewis claims not to miss the game at all! Meanwhile, he is dressing in his uniform, with lampblack under his eyes and wrapping his wrist with tape! He denies what is in his head! And he tells Urlacker "Only a fool trips on what's behind him!"BAM! What a line!! "Only a fool trips on what's behind him!"

My message to you today is twofold!

#1. It is OK to admit that you miss smoking (we all do), but please understand that you miss it because you are an addict! Dig deep enough to understand that you do not miss the things that smoking did to you, or what it cost you! Understand the magic moments in life that you failed to witness because you were off somewhere else feeding your addiction! Understand the cost not only in treasure, but in treasured moments!

#2. Keep your Focus, and keep moving forward! You can only trip on what is behind you if you take a step back! And, that would be foolish! You my friend are not a fool! Do not fall prey to foolish thinking!

Reflections Re-visited!

Posted by pir8fan Feb 14, 2014

Good evening fellow EXer's! Tonight I came here to read, and try offer a little help where I can! I do this most evenings, and one of the thoughts I try to keep in the forefront of my mind is, what it was like when I was where you are now! In order to do that I often go back to some of my early blogs! Tonight, I found one that was really a turning point, not only in my quit, but in my life! I would like to share it with you, in the hope that some of you will find some inspiration in it! This was written on my 94th day! I was at the lowest point of my life! Since then, I am much better, thank you!! And this may have been my turning point!

Good Smoke free afternoon everyone!! Thanks to all of you for helping me reach day 95!!!

Last night about 11:30 I went out to walk my dog. His name is Max! It was a nice warm Southwest Florida night. As we were ambling along, in the glare of a street light , I spotted a penny. There was a time in my life when I would have just left it there. But, I picked it up and put it in my pocket. This morning Max woke me up and told me it was time for his morning walk. I told him I would like to sleep a little longer. He explained what he was going to do to the carpet if I didn't get up. He won. I got up and we went for a long walk. As we were walking along I spotted another penny and again I picked it up and put it in my pocket. Not two minutes latter I found another penny. Now there is a little voice in the back of my head saying "what's up with all the pennies". I spent a few minute reflecting on that question. Those of you who know a little bit about me know that I am at the lowest point of my life. Physically, Financially, and on top of that I am giving up smoking. I came to two conclusions about the pennies.

1. I am looking down way to much!!! I need to hold my head back up high,so that I can see my way out of my problems!!!!

2. When you look close at a penny there is a message of hope on there. It says "IN GOD WE TRUST" ! Now I really have no idea how those pennies came to be where I could find them. But I have no intention of ignoring their message. When we have more on our plates than we can handle, there is a place to look!!!

There are my thoughts! What are you thinking?

EXer's In Orlando!!

Posted by pir8fan Feb 11, 2014

Quite a while back, Walt Disney transformed a sleepy burg in central Florida into a truly magical place, where dreams really do come true! This past weekend that EXperience was witnessed by a group of EXer's who came together to celebrate the success they have enjoyed at this site! From all over the country, they came to meet the people who helped them, the people who educated them, and the people who cared about them! Sometimes more than they cared about themselves! And, we became a little closer to the family that continues to grow here as we share "Collateral Kindness" with the next person who is joining the site!

Once again, the avatars came to life as we watched people walk into the room to meet, face to face, people that they had never met, yet were not at all strangers! People in the room rose as one to move forward for hugs and greetings as each EXer's arrived! The employees of the hotel were not really sure what was going on, but they knew they were witnessing something special. Over and over I was ask if this was a family reunion! The first time I tried to EXplain! After that, I just smiled and said "Yes it is!"

We recieved a special blessing from the weather! Some may not see it that way, because it was cold and rainy! That blew up a lot of the plans we had made to venture out and partake of the veritable plethora of entertainment options that Orlando offers! As a result of the poor weather conditions we spent a lot more time with each other! We had the oportunity to draw even closer! And that is the blessing of which I speak! In the days leading up to the trip, I think, we got caught up in all the fun things that we COULD do in Orlando! The weather brought back our focus to why we were coming to Orlando to start with!

The most treasured moments of this trip, for me, is the TIME that I spent with my brothers and sisters in Freedom! I will value forever the special, and sometime unEXpected, bonds that formed!

A special Thank You to Lisa for the political discussion! It is rare, and good, when people can disagree so much without being disagreeable!

And Sootie! The opportunity to meet you is an incredible, and super special moment that will live, and replay, forever on the big screen of my memories! You are everything that I could ask for in a best Friend! And so much more!

I could name names and go on all day! But I will not! Suffice it to say that I wish every member of this community could have been there in person! Know in your hearts that you were all with us in spirit! You were the topics of so many of our conversations!

I want to end this with a HUGE THANK YOU to all who came and made this weekend one of the most important of my life! I live for the opportunity to do this again!                  Tommy

YEAH!!!!

Posted by pir8fan Feb 1, 2014

I just read a blog by our dear Friend Stacie!! It made me jump off of my chair and punch the air and yell,"Yeah, she is right where she needs to be"!! Please read her blog today and compare it to some of her past blogs! Realize that she has reached a new stage in her quit! Below I will re-post an edited version of a blog I wrote well over 2 years ago! I hope that the info will be helpful to a lot of you! ConGrats Stacie! Be PROUD! I have a big hug for you in a few days!!

THE FOUR STAGES OF YOUR QUIT!

#1. Unconscious Incompetence! This is the beginning of your quit! You have no idea what your addiction is all about, or how to overcome it! At this point you depend on your enthusiasm, and pride to get you through!

#2. Conscious Incompetence! Now you are starting to understand the magnitude of the task you are undertaking! But you still don't know if you can do it! The people in your life, who have never smoked, have dropped their support because they no longer believe that you need it! It is a time when we lose many of our newbies. For the ones that stay, this is the time that you begin to understand the importance of you friends here! We will help you maintain your enthusiam! We will remind you to be proud!

#3. Conscious Competence! You are past the hardest part! You understand what it takes to maintain your commitment! You see yourself as a non-smoker! You have a grasp of the importance of 'Collateral Kindness"! You appreciate the fact that you can indeed help yourself by helping others!

#4. Unconscious Competence! You have this! You do not even have to think about it anymore! You are a non-smoker for life! You have reached a point where nothing would make you smoke even one cigarette! Our sweet sister in Freedom, Dawn was once ask by her doctor how she knew that she would never smoke again. She told him that she knew because she would rather die than put another cigarette in her mouth! She proudly kept her word right up to the day that she went to her reward! Once you reach this point, your pride is at its highest point! Some of you will hang around here to watch, and help others to the mountaintop where you reside! You will be called an Elder!

Many quitters will spend a long, long time vacillating between Stage #2 and Stage #3! Set your goal for completing all 4 Stages! Once you reach Stage #4, you will see all of the rewards that you have been expecting from your quit! Welcome to the Mountain Top! The view is awesome!!! My name is Tommy, and if you are not up here yet, I am saving a spot for you!
