Update!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 30, 2013

Thank you! Thank you all who offered up prayers for Trevor's heart transplant! There are good signs! Although Trevor will be sedated for at least 24 hours following the surgery, his new heart is beating on it own, and his vital signs look great! Everyone is cautiously optimistic!

The power of the prayers from this group has once again shown it's awesome power! Please, keep this young man in your thoughts and prayers!

I am proud to be part of the fantastic community!!                    Tommy

Please offer up a Prayer!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 29, 2013

During the last week a young man of just 19 years has watched his family come to Detroit from around the country. A family that fears that they are seeing him for the last time. He has been in a long battle with heart disease. As his heart has weakened his weight has dropped, and now he is mere shadow of the vigorus young man he was! A simple trip to the bathroom takes all the energy he can muster!

In what seems to be an eleventh hour miracle, a heart has become available. As I write this, young Trevor is being preped for surgery. He will receive a heart transplant begining at about midnight tonight. I am asking my BecomeanEX family to stop for a moment, and send up a prayer, A prayer not only for Trevor and his transplant team, but a prayer also for the family of the person who decided to be an organ donor, and through their own tragedy, has offered a second chance to to family that was running out of hope!

Did you get a PM?

Posted by pir8fan Oct 21, 2013

It seems that our fellow quitter Polynha1 did! While I do not know the full content of the PM, I am guessing that she is not the only one who got one! The author suggested that she leave the site because she did not agree with the term slip! I do not agree with it either, and I am not going anywhere, so don't bother to PM me about it!

If you did get a PM from someone trying to squelch your right to discuss your opinions and thoughts here, I am posting what I said on Polynha's blog!

FIRST AND FOREMOST, NO ONE GETS TO TELL ANYONE TO LEAVE THIS SITE EXCEPT ADMIN!

We should all be aware that not everyone will be on the same page about everything! However, we all should continue to read from the same book! That is the book of on-going support for each other! The term "slip" (in my opinion) is not accurate! When one makes a choice to smoke it is just that! A Choice! Whether you call it a slip, or a green and yellow zebra, it was still a choice!

I personally disagree with the site using the term! But, I do not make the rules, and I do appreciate the opportunity to come here and share in the "Collateral Kindness"! In the process we will encounter people who have different opinions! We should fell free to post our thoughts and discuss them in an open and honest manner! It is what my Friend Sootie once called "having an adult conversation" Personal attacks are beneath the dignity of this community!

Poly, I would encourage you to stay at the site and speak your mind! In the past we have had someone copy a PM and post it on the open board! I think that is a great idea!  A Private Message is only Private if both parties want it to be! If someone wants to disagree, they should do it in an open and honest discussion! Not through Fear and Intimidation!                      Tommy

A quit differed!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 16, 2013

It is a sad, sad day! I learned today that a Lady who was part of my quitting group here, blew a quit of over 3 and a half years last month! This Lady, and I shared so much duing the early days of our quits! We were there for each other! We even have a favorite BBQ joint in common!

She never hated the cigarettes enough. Then about a month ago she found enough horror in her everyday life, that the terror of the slavery did not seem that bad anymore!

I shed a few tears this afternoon. I am not sure if they were for her, or for the realization that I have the same addiction that dragged her back down!

However, like a Phoenix, she will rise from the ashes of her addiction tomorrow! And she will be proud again! And, WE will be proud again!

Be vigilant my friends! There is no safe harbor!                Tommy

Happy Birthday Sootie!!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 16, 2013

By the time I finish writing this, the clock will strike Midnight here on the east coast! That means it will be October 16th! That is the anniversary of the birth of my best friend! That is right! Sometime around 40 something years ago (I think) the earth was graced by the birth of Sootie! If you do not know this Lady yet, go out of your way to meet her! She embodies the qualities that I remember admiring in my Dear Aunt Lucy! She has the ability to shell everything right down to the corn! She sees through the husk and the silk and gets to the heart of the matter! No non-sense! Good common sense! You may not like her vision of things, but you will not doubt where she stands! And I find the truth very hard to argue with! It is very refreshing to be able to disagree with someone, without being disagreeable! Sootie once told me that she does not answer comments on her blogs! Her blogs pass on her advice, and opinions, and to answer comments is just argueing! That is so cool! The confidence to say what you mean, and not feel a need to defend it!

Happy Birthday Sootie! You are the BEST!!

Happy Birthday to You!

Happy Birthday to You!!

Happy Birthday Dear Sootie!!!!

Happy Birthday to Yooooooooooou!!!!!!!!

You know, it is probably not because people are stirring the pot, but on a regular basis we have someone write about this place going to hell in a hand basket! It is actually a good thing that we have people so passionate about quitting! This is not written to be negative, and it is not aimed at anyone! But a thought process started, and I am going to share it! I hope everyone will think it through, take what you need and leave the rest! Or, let's discuss it!

Those of us who enjoy success here have had absolutely fantastic support! People who have failed had great support also! Some used it well! Some did not! Shortly before I found a home here, a group of Young Ladies who called themselves the Novemember to Remember group arrived! Some of them are coming up on 4 Years quit next month! Bonnie, Sootie, Debi, Molly! You had great support, and you shared it with so many others! I have to point out that not everyone in that group made it! There was a red-head called Butt-Kicker who come to mind! She comes back from time to time, and we all hold out hope that she will find her forever quit one day!

All of us came with our own group! James, me, Thomas, SuzieQ! My point is that very little has changed! Whatever group you came with, some of you made it and some did not! We all believe that the support we got was best! And it was! Because it worked! Whether we recieved tough love, or compassion, or a combination of the two, it worked. And that was best for us! But if the combo we got was the right combo, why did some fail?

The truth is that all the combos are in play today that have always been there! Some of the names have changed, but the support is the same! Every quitter knows that there is no such thing as a slip! It is always been a choice! It does not matter whether Peggy said it four years ago, or Sherly said it yesterday! The only people who call it a slip are the one who smoke! There have always been people who say that is OK! There have always been people who say it is not! I do not like reading about those who smoke, but I am proud to be part of a group who offers people another chance! And, I think that if we all are just honest with each other, things will work out well! We can't save everyone! But we do not have to run anyone off either!

Tough love still lives here! Sometimes people do not recognize it! Because it does not always sound like someone being tough! And, compassion lives here too! Both are called honesty! And both have a place here! We are a great group of supporters! Let's continue to do what we do best! Let us celebrate our successes, and not be dragged down by our failures!               Tommy

An Even Keel!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 11, 2013

As a commissioned sales person one of the first things I learned was not to get to high when it was good, and not to get to low when it was bad. Sales work like that. It is chicken one day and feathers the next! There is a parallel, between that and "starting" a new smoke free life. I have been here for a quite while now, and I have watched a lot of people come and go. And some come and go again! The people who seem to be the most successful are the one who stay on a pretty even keel throughout the process.

Do not get me wrong! I believe that you celebrate every accomplishment and milestone along the way. We must pat ourselves on the back, and pass that same pat on to others. But we must also realize that everyday is just one day. We will have many good days as we continue our smoke free lives! We must also realize that we are going to have bad days. Bad things will happen to every one of us! That is called life!

My point is simple! Enjoy and celebrate every good day that life brings your way. Also, be prepared for the bad days. They will come! So, do not get so high on the good days that it is a devistating crash on the bad ones! They are all just one day! Make all the headway you can on good days. But, keep pushing through the bad ones. You may not get as far on a bad day, but you are still going in the right direction. Live everyday! Find peace within your self! Take the bad with the good and keep your focus on the latter! I wish you all a very good day!    Tommy

Good afternoon all! I woke up this morning to realize that there are limits to what I can do! And, there are limits to what I should do! Seems as though they are all physical! I can not fly (wish I could)! I can not run a four minute mile (dont want to)! I can not lift 600 lbs in the clean & jerk! (why would anyone?)!

Then there are the limits of what my mind can do! All of them are self imposed limits! Today, there are limitless posibilities of what I can accomplish! If I can conceive an idea, I can nurture it into reality! And so can you! I am setting some goals today, and I will reach them! I am not going to try to set your goals for you! But, I am going to suggest that one of them should be to love yourself! Love yourself enough to avoid self destruction! Smoking is a terrible way that we have beaten ourselves up! STOP IT! Your mind has the power to overcome this!!  We all can do this if we set our minds to it! Make up your mind! Be firm in your committment!! WE DON"T DO THAT ANYMORE! Your mind can do this! FOCUS on the benefits of quitting! Never lose your DETERMINATION to be healthy for yourself, and for those that love you! Today, the possibilities have no limits! What is your dream? What are YOU going to do about it?           Tommy

Happy Birthday Stacie!!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 9, 2013

Today is our Dear Friend Stacie's Birthday! I am pretty sure she is about 29! Our Dear Shawn can not be here today, but she ask me to deliver the cake picture!

Now, please join me in singing!!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR STACIE!!!

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!!

HAVE A GREAT DAY SWEET LADY

But, I did not to smoke it! I do admit that I took some of the tobacco and put it in my mouth to wet it! Then I applied it to my skin! Why you ask?? Well here is what happened!

I came home from work last night, and after walking in to the condo, I noticed a stinging sensation along the scar on my chest! That is the long, wide scar from my by-pass surgery last year! I rubbed my chest and it got worse! I had visions of one of the by-passes failing, and breaking loose in my chest! I reached to see if it was wet, thinking I may be bleeding out, and the stinging got worse! I whipped off my shirt and there was the problem! A yellow jacket was stinging me up and down my scar! At least 4 stings!

The only way I have ever treated bee stings, and such, was with bacon, or wet tobacco! In my youth my Grandmother always tied a small piece of bacon fat to the sting! Usually on my foot! I went barefoot a lot, and our yard was full of clover! Anyway, I had no bacon, so my thoughts turned to what I have always known! Ah! Lisa down the street smokes! I walked as fast as I could to her house and bummed a cigarette! I very quickly put wet tobacco on the four places on my chest! Unfortunately, it only worked for a short time!

I ended up having an allergic reaction! I did not have antifalactic shock anta falactic anti falactic shock  any kind of shock. I put ice on it and it was not so bad! But when I took the ice off it felt like I was being stung a hundred more times! So, I ended up at the ER! I spent a big chunk of the night there, and they got it under control! I have drugs now and took the day off! Finally. I am feeling better!

But, it bothers me that when I was hurting worst, my first, or maybe second thought, was that tobacco was the answer! My message here is this! I have learned over the past few years that tobacco is not the answer! Tobacco is never the answer! To anything! I should have known that! And I hope that I never fall for that line of thinking again! And, I hope that you never do either!

Life Free! Smoke Free! And, Tobacco Free!                        Tommy

Destination FREEDOM!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 3, 2013

As we sail our ships through life, everyone we meet is either a sail or an anchor! If we are to reach the shore of true happiness, we must collect out sails, and cut loose our anchors! Raise your sails high into the wind! Use even the slightest breeze to keep moving in the right direction! Do not let the anchors in your life drag you down, or hold you back! These nattering nay-bobs of negativity have nothing to contribute! They drain your energy, and distract you from your true purpose!

We come here is help each other live smoke free lives! Education and support are the two legs that our quits stand upon! Support comes in many forms. It can be compassion, or tough love, or just bringing a smile to someone face when they are down! All are tools to reach the same end! There is no right or wrong way to do this! Stay strong my friends. And lend strength to each other! It will be payed back! When you need it the most!                          Tommy
