Long ago and far away!

Posted by pir8fan Aug 27, 2013

A long time ago, 1326 Days ago to be EXact, I came to this site on the 8th day of my quit! My first blog received 6 responses! Among them was one from a young Lady who goes by the monicker of SmokedOut! She made me feel welcome, and encouraged me with my young quit!

In the months that followed I learned how hard she was struggling to find her "forever quit"! But she never stopped being a source of encouragement for me and sooooooo many others! She relapsed a number of times! It seems that it was 5 cigarettes each time! Some became frustrated with her! Some labeled her a "Serial Quitter"! Some gave up on her! Once, at least, I am pretty sure that she gave up on herself! She was handed a lot of "Tough Love"!

This Lady has always held a special place in my heart, and always will! So I sent her a message one day that told her that no matter what she went through, I would be there for her! FOREVER! I think she learned that I  meant that from the bottom of my heart! So, when things were bad she knew I was here for her! When things were good, I was here for her! And she was always here for me!

Today, our Dear Friend Teresa celebrates 500 DAYS of Freedom! For all who showed her continued love and support when she fell off the wagon, or horse, or whatever she fell off of, your efforts are rewarded! For Teresa, you have reached a great milestone today! My 500 Day milestone still stands out in my mind as my greatest celebration on this site! I hope today will be the same for you!

My Dear Friend, thank you for being there for me in the very beginning! And, thank you for showing us all that falling to the bottom just gives you a place to bounce from! You have rewarded all of us who believed in you! But, most of all you have rewarded yourself! And I, just like your quit, am here for you, FOREVER!

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL ABOARD!!!!!!!!! Tommy

OK----first----Sootie and I  apologize if our 5 or 6 (I think Jordan call that "all the time") comments on our message boards bothered any of you. Apparently.....the "subject matter" hit a nerve.....wonder why? We were trying to illustrate (perhaps in a clumsy manner) how newbies and others feel when they state a premise and many of you jump them. Most recent example----Dixie...there are plenty of others. It is not that you disagree.....disagreeing is fine...... demoralizing is not. One post stating your thoughts is sufficient. But people will go back again and again and again.......some even stop talking to the blogger and start talking to each other. Read back on some of them...not just Dixie. It isn't a pretty picture.

So-----we apologize if we hurt your feelings. How bout you guys....?????

People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.                           Tommy!

Shawn's Mom!

Posted by pir8fan Aug 22, 2013

Our sister in Freedom, Shawn has rushed her mother to the hospital! If they can find an available O.R., she will have surgery today! Otherwise, she will certainally be in surgery tomorrow! I have no details to share, and that will be Shawn choice, when she returns to us!

I would like to ask all who can, and will, to raise their voices in prayer, along with mine, for Shawn's Mom!

Thank you!   Tommy

"IF YOU ARE NOT RIDING WITH US, YOU ARE MISSING THE TRAIN"

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL ABOARD!!!!!!!!! Tommy

Last week I went outside for a quick walk with my dog! I was in a bit of a hurry, and did not put on shoes! That is a no-no for those of us with diabetes! Sure enough there was an invisible splinter of glass on the sidewalk! I am sure by now you all have figured out where it end up! Yep, stuck in my foot! I thought I got it out! Wrong! I spent the day at work standing on it! That night, after soaking my feet, I was finally able to get the glass out! I am healing just fine, thank you!

My point here is that this must have been caused by my quit! Bad things never happened to me when I was smoking! Life was great! Everything was perfect,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,NO, wait a minute! The memories are flooding back now! Bad things did happen, even when the cigarette ads told me how great everything was! I did have kidney cancer! I did have obstructive sleep apnea! I was in some auto accidents! People I knew and loved died! Lots of bad things happened, and I had no quit to blame them on!

In recent days I have seen lots of people questioning their own quits because there is something bad going on in their lives! That, unfortunately is life! Bad things will happen! And, bad things happen to good people! Your depression, your anguish, your hangnail, or whatever is not caused by your quit! You had all those things before your quit! They may seem worse, or more noticable now, but that is not because they are worse! The nicodemon will take everything in your life, and twist it into an EXcuse to have "just one little smoke"! Do not fall for it! There are a million EXcuses to smoke but not one good reason!

Ignore the nostalgia! Nostalgia is like a grammer lesson! We find the "present tense" and the "past perfect"! Keep your quit in perspective! It will not eliminate bad things from your life, but it does make them easier to deal with! It will not make your life perfect, but it will make your life better! Freedom is always best!

Do not listen to the voice of the nicodemon! He wants to take your Freedom, and yes, your very life, away from you! He want to enslave you once again! You have broken Free! You have him beat! Now squash the little *******, like the bug that he is, and walk away to the world of Freedom, and opportunity that awaits those who are bold enough to take it!

Keep your Focus!! Never lose your Determination!!                                      Tommy

Relapsers!

Posted by pir8fan Aug 5, 2013

There has been a lot of talk about the relapses that we have seen here lately! Relapses are bad! We hate to see them! We do not condone them! In fact, a lot of us take them personally! We look inward, and we ask ourselves what we might have done differently that would have been more helpful! The truth is that it was not our fault! We can't stop every relapse every time! And, it is better to see them than not to see them!

I have been here for over three and a half years! Our relapsers come and go! There are time when we go a long time without seeing one! They are still happening! However, during those times, people are just quietly dropping out of sight! Then we have times when we see a lot of them! These are the people who relapse, but stay here to fight again! These are the ones that we still have a chance to help! The ones who relapse, leave, and never come back are forever lost!

I would suggest to you that when we hear about relapses, we should be sorry that the person did not do all their homework, and did not take our words to heart! We should be upset that they were not able to face down the demon! This time! We should, however, celebrate the fact that those people did not slink off into the night! We still have a chance to help them! They still have a chance to find their personal Freedom! And at the end of the day, that is what we are here for! To help ourselves by helping others!

If you look through the membership roles, we have a lot of long term quitters here who were once serial quitters! But serial quitter that never gave up on us, or themselves! Let us keep our Focus, and help those who stay with us become the leaders of the next generation of quitters!             Tommy

"IF YOU ARE NOT RIDING WITH US, YOU ARE MISSING THE TRAIN"

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL ABOARD!!!!!!!!! Tommy

While I really prefer to come here every day and night with original thought, there are times when old thoughs are good also! Many of you have seen these stories before! I beg your indulgence so that those who have not, may also get the opportunity to find something they need here!

As I read the various blogs, I find everyone looking for just a little more than help with kicking a nasty addiction. There are loud screams and soft cries from people with varing levels of desperation. Today I would like to share with you two stories that I have encountered that demonstrate FOCUS and DETERMINATION.

The first is about a lady named Trudy. In 1925 she dreamed of becoming the first woman and only the sixth person to swim the English Channel. She made her plans until the day she set out, in pea soup fog, to make her dream a reality. She swam with all she had, for as long as she could, but finally had to give up. She was pulled aboard a boat, and later discovered she was only 1/4 of a mile from the shore. She realized that she could have made it if she had only known how close she was. Her attempt to live her dream, like many others, was crushed because she could not see how close she was. In 1926 Gertrude Ederle went back on a clear day and became the first woman to swin the English Channel. This time she could see her goal. Her ability to Focus on the shore helped her reach her dream. And she did it almost 2 hours faster than any of the men who preceded her. Keep your Focus! Otherwise, you may never know how close you are to success!

My second story is about a man more well known. His name is Sir Edmund Hillary. He was first man to reach the summit of Mt. Everest! Most know his fame for this accomplishment, but few know it was his second attempt. His first attempt was a failure. But the man was not a quitter. Two months after his failure, while giving a speech at the base of Mt.Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary turned and shook his fist at the mountain and proclaimed " I will get you next time, you are as big as you will ever be, but I am not done growing!" This Determination drove him until he did indeed find success in his next attempt! The rest, as they say, is history.

As you face the daily challenges of you own personal goals, not the least of which is Freedom from the evils of tobacco, remember the lessons of these great champions!Keep your FOCUS!! Never lose your DETERMINATION!! Live FREE!!! Tommy

I have tried to keep my mouth shut! I really have! But, I, like most people, can only eat so much crap before my breath starts to stink! And it is not too peachy right now!

A short time back a group of our members made a choice to leave our site! They took a vast storehouse of knowledge with them! We will miss them! Fortunately, they created a place where those who believe that theirs is the only way to have a successful quit, can go and join them! Those who believe that their approach, combined with the approach of those of us who still live here is the most effective, can visit both places! We continue to welcome ALL opinions and comments here, and are willing to discuss them!

There is still a vast storehouse of knowledge here! Remember that those who left honed their own quits here! I am not on facebook, and I do not care to be! But I do hear a lot! So, let me first say that if someone here feels a need to go over there and stir up crap, I beg you not to do that! By the same token if you feel a need to come into my living and stir up crap, well, you were welcome when you came in, and you are just as welcome to get out!

If anyone has the guts to come here and say that the people who still call this site home, have not helped them, then let them say it! But let them also have the guts to listen to our responses! You do not have to agree with everything we say and do. We can discuss it! But, I am not going to sit idle while you make light of the efforts of Giulia, Sheryl, Sootie, Thomas, Aztec, Bonnie, Shawn, Maggie, LindaN, Marcie, Cyn, Teresa, and I can go on, and on! The Freedom Train is a daily celebration of the success that this site has produced! And we will continue to share "Collateral Kindness"!

I am also tired of reading statistic that are pulled out of thin air! I read that we once had a 10% success rate! Really?? I want to know where those numbers came from! Since I joined this site 01/08/10 we have almost 500,000 new members! That is 383 per day! 38 successful new quits a day would be 10%. Really???? Let's be honest here!

Tough love vs. coddlers? That will never be solved! Most people need some of both! Personally I try to offer that! I know that more than one of the people who are reading this can attest to the sharp edge of my tongue! But, every person that received tough love from me, knew first that I loved them, and was trying to help them! Otherwise it is just being tough! That does not work! It is easy to have a higher success rate if you run off everyone who does not worship the ground you walk on, and do everythig you tell them to do! I am not here to amass a personal following, or to train lemmings! I just want to help people quit smoking! As long as the owners of this site allow me a voice, I will offer the support that I think people need! That is a mix of all kinds of support! I will try my best to respect people, and let them maintain their dignity! That has made this site successful for a long time!

Now, let's put all the garbage behind us, and go do what we are supposed to do!
