FOCUS AND DETERMINATION!

Posted by pir8fan Feb 26, 2013

WARNING!! WARNING!!  THIS IS A REPOST!!

While I really prefer to come here each night with original thought, there are times when old thoughs are good also! Many of you have seen these stories before! I beg your indulgence so that those who have not may get the opportunity to find something they need here!

As I read the various blogs, I find everyone looking for just a little more than help with kicking a nasty addiction. There are loud screams and soft cries from people with varing levels of desperation. Today I would like to share with you two stories that I have encountered that demonstrate FOCUS and DETERMINATION.

The first is about a lady named Trudy. In 1925 she dreamed of becoming the first woman and only the sixth person to swim the English Channel. She made her plans until the day she set out, in pea soup fog, to make her dream a reality. She swam with all she had, for as long as she could, but finally had to give up. She was pulled aboard a boat, and later discovered she was only 1/4 of a mile from the shore. She realized that she could have made it if she had only known how close she was. Her attempt to live her dream, like many others, was crushed because she could not see how close she was. In 1926 Gertrude Ederle went back on a clear day and became the first woman to swin the English Channel. This time she could see her goal. Her ability to Focus on the shore helped her reach her dream. And she did it almost 2 hours faster than any of the men who preceded her. Keep your Focus! Otherwise, you may never know how close you are to success!

My second story is about a man more well known. His name is Sir Edmund Hillary. He was first man to reach the summit of Mt. Everest! Most know his fame for this accomplishment, but few know it was his second attempt. His first attempt was a failure. But the man was not a quitter. Two months after his failure, while giving a speech at the base of Mt.Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary turned and shook his fist at the mountain and proclaimed " I will get you next time, you are as big as you will ever be, but I am not done growing!" This Determination drove him until he did indeed find success in his next attempt! The rest, as they say, is history.

As you face the daily challenges of you own personal goals, not the least of which is Freedom from the evils of tobacco, remember the lessons of these great champions! Keep your FOCUS!! Never lose your DETERMINATION!! Live FREE!!! Tommy

"IF YOU ARE NOT RIDING WITH US, YOU ARE MISSING THE TRAIN"

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL ABOARD!!!!!!!!! Tommy

The dictionary says that a friend is: "1. a person whom one knows well and is fond of 2.an ally, supporter,or sympathizer"!

A friend inspired me to write this blog! She said that she does not respond much, or write much here because her quit is not very long! She is afraid that she will say the wrong thing! The worst thing that she said was that she had been made to feel "Less Than"! I want all of my friends (including the ones that I have not met yet) to know that you are never "less than"!

I have friends here that have a lot of years quit! I have over three years quit! I have friends with only a  few days quit! And friends all in between! This site gives us a forum to ask question, express our feelings, and help each other the best we can! We all make mistakes from time to time, because we are human! This community gives us the right to be wrong! And if we are, someone will correct us!

But no matter how long you have been quit, you are no "less than"! If I may call a few names, my friend Giulia has a quit that will be 7 years old in another week! My friend Sootie has a quit that is almost 3 and a half years old! I have a quit that is 1149 days old! My friend Shawn is closing in on a year! Your quit is (fill in the blank)________ days old!

Since the first day of Giulia's quit she has not smoked a single cigarette! Since the first day of Sootie's quit she has not smoked a single cigarette! Same for Shawn! Same for me! That is all that any of us can do! If you have gone from the first day of your quit without smoking a single cigarette, you have done all that you can do! You have done EXactally what the rest of us have done! No more, no less! You have done the same thing we all have! You have quit smoking!

Never think of yourself as "Less Than" my friends! And know that tomorrow you will have "More Than" you have today!

Tommy

..............to everyone who felt the need to leave the site today! Let's clear the air! Did you leave because you felt unappreciated? Did you leave because you felt guilty of something? Did you leave because you are tired? Let's talk about it! Say the word, and I will give you my phone number, or send me yours, and I will call you! I know you are still out there!           Tommy

May I tell you a story???

Posted by pir8fan Feb 11, 2013

If the answer is "no" you should move on, because we all know I am going to write it anyway!

A lot of you know that I just returned from a short cruise! A much needed vacation! While many of you know that I like the frozen margaritas with EXtra salt(don't tell Sandy), and the casino, you may not know that I also love the art auctions! While on this last cruise I was fortunate enough to collect my third work by the great Peter Max!

Peter Max is the most important and prolific artist living today! I am sure that many of you know of his work, and the rest of you have seen it, and just did not know it was his! I encourage you to look him up! He is an awesome human being! Among other things he teamed with Lee Iacocca to raise funds to restore the Statue of Liberty! He also did portraits of all the first responders killed on 9/11, and gave them to their families! He is a large supporter of more than 1400 different charities! I could go on, and on! I have had the pleasure of meeting this great man, and he did not disappoint in any way! He is a treasure to this, his adopted country!

Many years ago on a cold and rainy night, in New York, Max observed Pablo Picasso and a companion leaving an establishment. Picasso was huddled, with his collar up, against the cold, and wet. The companion held an umbrella over him! As they walked away from Max, he realized that the man with the unbrella was a man of action! He was protecting the great Picasso from the rain! From that thought, Umbrella Man was born! Over the years Max has done many versions of Umbrella Man! I am now the proud owner of one of them!

The point I am headed for, is this! In our daily efforts to remain Smoke Free we often forge forward through the rain of trials and emotions! We turn up our collars and struggle through, with whatever resources we have! Sometimes we need the extra support, and encouragement of our Friends here in this community! Here we finds so many people of action, who help protect our quits! Our own Umbrella Men and Women! I would like to take a moment here to thank all of you who spend so much of your lives holding the umbrella for others! I want to send out a big THANK YOU for all that you do to protect the quits here! You are indeed a treasure as well!

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Umbrella Man!                                  Tommy

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL ABOARD!!!!!!!!! Tommy

If anyone should happen to miss me for the next few days, I have not abandoned you! I am taking advantage of some days off and going on a little 4 day cruise! I love these boat rides! I am going to Cozumel and Key West! As strange as it may seem, as much as I travel, I have never been to Key West! For someone who has spent the last 4 years in SouthWest Florida, that is just wrong!  So I am on my way!

I hope that while I am gone everyone will play nice with each other! Have much fun, and have it smoke Free! Hugs and Smooches!!                                Tommy

The Eve of Super Weekend

Posted by pir8fan Feb 1, 2013

As we head into this Super Bowl Weekend it seems an ideal time to compare our battles with those of professional athletes! I have, in blogs past, looked at the similarities! Let's all look once more, and see it this one is similar or different!

It has been said that "sports do not build character, they merely reveal it!" That is one of the most memorable lines I ever heard about sports! Is it true here as well? I do not think so! I think that since the day I first arrived here, the people of this site have helped me become a better person! I have read the thoughts, and ideas of litterally thousands of people, and many thousands of blogs, and commments on message boards! A lot of it runs together over time, and it is hard to remember that different people say the same things at various stages of their quit!

I have watched us fight, like siblings, and rise from that as one family, to rush to the aid of our brothers and sisters in need!

Everyone brings something different to the table! Reading the words here is much like panning for gold! You shake through a lot of useless stuff and occasionally you find that shinning nugget! You accumulate those nuggets and take them to heart! I believe that these nuggets have the power to change you! They make you look at things in a different light! They build your character!

I know that escaping this addiction makes us better people! Do our interactions here do that as well? Does "Collateral Kindness"( helping ourselves by helping others) build character? I think it does! What do you think??

I will be interested to hear the thoughts of others on this!!          Tommy
