Just a Friendly Reminder!

Posted by pir8fan Dec 27, 2012

It is a stressful time of the year! It is a time that we should stay close to our support group here! Thru the coming days we need to Focus on the reason we are all here! With that thought in mind I am re-posting a blog I wrote about a year ago! I was titled "Let's be Honest here! Please!"

In the early days of our quits we come here and pour our hearts out to strangers! We talk about our struggles! We openly admit the troubles we are encountering on our path to Freedom! Soon these strangers become our friends! All of a sudden thing are different! How many of you have said or thought " I don't want to burden my friends with my problems."?

I just put on a fresh pot of coffee, and I would like to invite everyone to wake up and have a sniff! Look around at the people who have been here from the first day of this site! Look at those of us that have been here for a couple of years! Look at the people who work so hard to put the Freedom Train on the tracks everyday! Do you really think we are here to make friends and socialize? Friends are a "Collateral Benefit" of being here! They are not the purpose! The reason we are here is because we genuinely care about helping you quit, and stay quit!

When you internalize the issues you are facing, you are not giving us the chance to help you! When you wait until you have smoked to reach out, you are not giving us a chance to help save your quit! Knowing that we have helped someone, or saved someones quit, is the reward that we get for our efforts here! Please do not deny us a chance to do what we live here for! Most of all, and more importantly, do not deny yourself a chance to succeed! You deserve a Smoke Free Life! You can have one! Please, give us the chance to help!

It Is Christmas Day At EX!!!

Posted by pir8fan Dec 25, 2012

Today it is Christmas and here at our site

Our people are posting and shining their light

Newbies are sticking with us, EXtending their quits!

Learning they can beat those nicotine fits

Our EXperts stop for a moment, and put aside their gifts

To bring their knowledge here, giving everyone lifts

We remember the reasons that we all quit smoking

The nasty stench, the coughing, and the choking

We move through the season, and the triggers we ignore

Taking pirde in the fact that "We Dont Do That Anymore"

We have escaped the addiction that almost broke us

MERRY CHRISTMAS my Friends, now lets keep our Focus!!

A Christmas Memory

Posted by pir8fan Dec 24, 2012

Was it really a year ago, already? Was it only a year ago? Sometimes, I can ask either question about the same event! Does that ever happen to you?

One year ago I had the pleasure, and honor of spending Christmas Eve with our Dear Sweet Sister in Freedom, Dawn! If you have arrived here recently, you never knew Dawn! But you can see her picture on my home page!

I was able to be a part of Dawn's spending Christmas with her three daughters and two grand daughters! I was proud to help facilitate that! I thought I was doing something special for Dawn! It turned out that I was doing something special for me! I think she knew, and I wonder if the kids had the same feeling that I had! It would be Dawn's last Christmas here on earth! Dawn was a very special Lady! She spent the last few years of her life fighting a cancer that had no cure! But she never quit fighting! And, all the way to the end, she maintained an unshakable faith in God! She would be the first to tell you that whatever happened, God would make it be alright!

Dawn and I were together last Christmas Eve,and it is a memory that will last me a lifetime! This year Christmas will be a downgrade from that wonderful evening, for me! For Dawn, it will be an upgrade. She will be spending Christmas with her Savior this year! She will hear the voices of the Angels singing the Christmas Hymns and Praising the Lord. You know, looking back, remembering the glow of her face in that church, I think she might have heard them last year too!

Merry Christmas my Sweet, Sweet, Friend! Heaven is a better place because you are there!

A Christmas Wake-up Call!

Posted by pir8fan Dec 23, 2012

A few days back I was filled with the spirit of the holidays! I went out and bought EXtra presents! And I did what I call my "Ham Thing"! Some of you already know about it! Every year, I go to a small grocery store where I am not known! I listen to see who among the employees seems to know their customers the best! Then I go and buy five nice hams! After I pay for them I ask for the manager! I tell him that I want to give those hams back to him! I want the person who knows their customers best to pick out five families that need a little EXtra help this year! Those families each get a ham with the only stipulation being that they can not know who gave it to them! It was a fat man with a beard!

After doing this, and feeling very good about myself, I made one last stop at the gas station on the way home!  When I cranked my truck and put it in gear nothing happened! As I waited for the tow truck I was steaming! It was the old thing about letting no good deed go unpunished! I was finally able to get home, and found that someone had smashed one of the two golden reindeer that I bought for my yard this year! Yep, punishment for the good deeds was flowing!

Since that day I have had a liitle time to think! It took $652 dollars to fix my truck the next day! But I am not upset! I am happy that I had the money to fix it! How many people would have had their Christmas ruined by that unexpected expense? How many would be without a vehicle for a long time because they had no money to fix it? How fortunate am I?

Someone took out their anger on my reindeer! It is an inanimate object! I am grateful that they did not take their anger out on a spouse.....or a kid! The wire and glitter and lights can be replaced! Or, I can live just as well without it! I am a fortunate man! But, I allowed myself to be upset by things that really had no power to hurt me!

In retrospect, I hope these realizations make me a better man! In the future, I hope I can keep a better perspective! Tonight, as Christmas draws near, I am counting my blessings! To each of you at this site, I count you as a blessing! And I can count you without having to stop for a cigarette!

Merry Christmas to all of you my Friends!!!!                                   Tommy

The Three Ghost of Christmas

Posted by pir8fan Dec 22, 2012

The Christmas season is upon us! And, we all keep Christmas in our own way. It is a season of gifts, and decorations, and worship!  It is a season of peace and good will. For some of us Christmas is a day of quiet solitude. It is also a day of refection for us all! Many of us look back to the Quits of Christmas Past! A lot of us look at the Quit of Christmas Present! Some are looking forward, to the Quit of Christmas Future!

The common thread in all of these efforts is love! Your quit may be inspired by your love for yourself, or your love for others! And it does not matter which! If you love yourself, maintain your quit for that reason! If you have love for others, then that should drive your quit! If you are fortunate enough to be loved, never disrespect those extremely important people by putting something as horrible as an addiction above them! Stay quit for yourself! Stay quit for the ones you love! Stay quit for those who love you!

I wish you all a joyous Christmas and Holiday Season! Now go forward..... with love.....and prosper!!!!    Tommy

Not long after I joined this site I coined a new phrase to describe what I found here! It caught on with a few people here,(Thomas comes to mind! Thanks Thomas!) and you see it often now! I went back and dug up the original blog I wrote, and thought I would share it with those of you who were not around when my quit was only 112 days old! I hope this helps everyone understand what I mean when I talk about "Collateral Kindness"!                    Tommy

April 22, 2010

"I hate blowing my own horn (but not bad enough to stop myself) So here goes!!! In a comment on someone blog the other day, I coined a new phrase. After giving it considerable thought, I realized that it defines what happens at this site. We all know that in war you drop a bomb that blows up its intendes target. That is good! Anything else it blows up is called " Collateral Damage ". It is an unintended consequence.

The phrase I coined the other day was " Collateral Kindness ". You see it here everyday!! People come to this site everyday under the guise of learning how to quit smoking. I say "HORSEFEATHERS". There are a lot of folks here that will tell you how to quit! Don't put one in your mouth, and don't light it!! We all already know how to quit.

What we come here looking for is self esteem, confidence, reassurances, friends and confidants that understand us and what we are going through. We are looking for someone to believe in us and help us believe in ourselves. Some come not really caring about themselves, because they are not sure anyone else cares about them. People come here looking for pride because somewhere along the way they have lost it. People come here looking for their identity, because they lost it. I am sure you can add to this list, and I could go on for quite a while.

All of the things people come here looking for are here. Whatever you need, just ask, some one is willing to give it to you. It may be a kick in the seat of your pants or a pat on your back, two things very close together, yet a long ways apart. Some of the kindest people on earth call this site home! People come here and find what they need! Then a strange phenomenon occurs. People suddenly start passing that help on to others! "Collateral Kindness"!!

People came here looking for help. When they found it they started giving it away! Unintended consequences!! And one day these poor broken people, who came here looking for help realize, they brought their own help with them. They had the power to do it all along. They just needed someone to tell them to click their heels together three times and repeat "There is no place like home" And they all lived happily ever after!!!! The End"
