One from the HEART!

I wanted to take time to thank those of you who offered up thoughts and prayers during my most recent hospital stay! I also want to apologize to those of you who were left out of the loop! That was not my intent! The decision to go to the ER was one that came about suddenly! I was not at a keyboard, and was in no condition to type if I had been!

Most of you have been with me through my quadruple by-pass back in August! And most of you know of the cardiac cath that I had to have in October! Monday I had another one! I went to the Emergency Room at about 11:00 Eastern time Sunday night!

The problem is scar tissue! In one of the by-pass arteries, the scar tissue is forming so vigorously that it is blocking the blood flow! That is why I had the surgery to start with! The blood flow was blocked! That came from the mistreatment of my body over the years. And, yes, smoking! Now the cure is the cause! I am happy to report that the Dr was able to break up the scar tissue, and that my blood is flowing quite well! For now! The bad news is that this will happen again! Hopefully not every 7-8 weeks! There is no way to know how many times! The Cardiologist said he was hoping for 3 to 4 months before we have to this again! Eventually, I hope, the scar tissue will develop in an area that will not create this blockage! The procedure that the Dr performs is placing a balloon in the scar tissue and inflating it! I can feel this as it blocks the blood flow and tears the scar tissue! This put me seconds away from a heart attack and I can assure you that it hurts!

The questions that I have for all of you are these! Would you like to go through this? If so just keep smoking! Would you like to go through the quadruple by-pass? Imagine them sawing your sternum apart, and re-routing the arteries of you heart! Can you just visaulize the surgeon holding your heart in his hands? If this sounds cool, just keep smoking! Do you think that it would be an EXciting adventure to go through things much worse that this? Ask JoJo about a lung transplant! Ask Kelly about lung reduction surgery! Here is your opportunity! Grasp Freedom with both hands before you learn about these thing the hard way! Or you can ignore our lessons! It would probably never happen to you anyway! I know it was never suppose to happen to me! Live Free! Breathe Free!                              Tommy!

Thanksgiving has passed!

The turkey is carved, the sandwiches eaten, and the carcass is turned into soup!

 We met with our kin, toasted all of our friends, and now we return to our group!

 I wish everyone here, a season of cheer, and all the good things that can be!

Thru the holiday season, let's remember the reasons, we all chose to be SMOKE FREE!

Good morning fellow EXer's! I would like to wish everyone out there in NoExcuseville a very happy Thanksgiving! As I contemplate the activities that fill our holiday, one that was not around at the original Thanksgiving was pro football! However a little thought does bring out some interesting (I think) parallels between the plight of these gladiators, and those of us who continue to beat this addiction! I hope you will find this line of thought interesting!

#1. Preperation.

Each year these professional athelets come to a summer camp! They make a committment to do whatever it takes to achive success! Here they work on the physical conditioning that their bodies will need to endure the ravages of a long season!

Each day "newbies" come to this site! They make a committment to do whatever it takes to achive success! They look to us for the mental conditioning that they will need to endure the onslaught of the nicodemon!

#2. Study.

The next step for these ball players is to learn, or relearn the fundamentals of thier profession! They must memorize their playbooks so they know what they need to do on every single play! They look forward to their season starting, so they can put what they have learned to good use!

The next step for our "newbies" is to study. Here they learn to accept the fact that they are addicts! They learn the fundamentals of a quit! From charting their smoking episodes, to recognizing their triggers! They start to look forward to their own personal quit date!

# 3. Pre-season.

Camp breaks, and these atheletes go on the pre-season! Here they get the first chance to put into motion all that they have learned! Some will do very well. The coaches will recognize them right away! They will recieve special attention! They will become team captains, or starters! These people will not back down, ever! In them is a basic understanding that was verbalized by the great Vince Lombardi! I do not have the exact quote, so forgive me as I paraprase "The harder you work for something, the harder it is to give it up!" Those who have neither learned this, nor put in the effort will continue to struggle!

The third step for our new "newbies" is to go out and put what they have learned in to motion! They quit smoking! Some will do very well, and the "elders" (the folks I call the Super Exer's) will recognize them right away! They will recieve special attention! They will become leaders at this site! They understand how hard they worked to get here, and are determined not to give up! Those who have not worked as hard will continue to struggle!

#4. The season begins! It really counts! What these atheletes do every day matters. The food that they eat. The beverages that they drink. Every bit of exercise they get! And every thought that goes through their heads. All of it make them who they are, and determines how much success they have! The coaches understand that not everyone is blessed with the same level of talent! It is their jobs to help those who are having the hardest time, to become winners! They also understand that not everyone has the comittment, and dedication to make it! Those are the ones that disappear from the rosters! Some will work hard enough to come back. Some will never understand what it takes!

FOCUS and DETERMINATION!!!!

As I read the various blogs, I find everyone looking for just a little more than help with kicking a nasty addiction. There are loud screams and soft cries from people with varing levels of despiration. Today I would like to share with you two stories that I have encountered that demonstrate FOCUS and DETERMINATION.

The first is about a lady named Trudy. In 1925 she dreamed of becoming the first woman and only the sixth person to swim the English Channel. She made her plans until the day she set out, in pea soup fog, to make her dream a reality. She swam with all she had for as long as she could, but finally had to give up. She was pulled aboard a boat, and latter discovered she was only 1/4 of a mile from the shore. She realized that she could have made it if she had only known how close she was. Her attempt to live her dream, like many others, was crushed because she could not see how close she was. In 1926 Gertrude Ederle went back on a clear day and became the first woman to swin the English Channel. This time she could see her goal. Her ability to Focus on the shore helped her reach dream. And she did it almost 2 hours faster than any of the men who preceded her. Keep your Focus!  Otherwise, you may never know how close you are to success!

My second story is about a man more well known. His name is Sir Edmund Hillary. He whe first man to reach the summit of Mt. Everest! Most know his fame for this accomplishment, but few know it was his second attempt. His first attempt was a failure. But the man was not a quitter. Two months after his failure, while giving a speech at the base of Mt.Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary turned and shook his fist at the mountain and proclaimed " I will get you next time, you are as big as you will ever be, but I am not done growing!" This Determination drove him until he did indeed find success in his next attempt! The rest, as they say, is history.

As you face the daily challenges of you own personal goals, not the least of which is Freedom from the evils of tobacco, remember the lessons of these great champions! Keep your FOCUS!! Election Day 2012

If you have not gone out to vote today, I would like to encourage you to do so now! While many refer to our country as a Democracy, the truth of the matter is that we are a Representative Republic! If you do not exercise your right to vote then you are not represented!

I leave you, today, with the words of Thomas Paine. He wrote these words on December 23, 1776, just before Washington crossed the Delaware! These words provided inspiration for a rag tag group of soldiers with wet and icy rags tied around their feet in place of boots! They moved forward and secured our Freedom! Exercise your Freedom today! And no matter how things turn out, Don't Smoke Over It!

The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. As I talk with people I meet, this site often come up in the conversation! From smokers, people who are new to quitting, or those who have never smoked the questions I get are always "Whys?".

#1. Why does this site make a difference?

#2. Why do people who have tried before and failed, find success there?

#3. Why do you say you owe your success in this quit to a website?

#4. Why, now that you have been quit so long, do you continue to spend your time there?

In the next few minutes I am going to try to answer those questions. Then I am going to turn the floor over to you, my fellow EXers, and ask you help make this something that the new people here will understand!

#1. This site makes a difference because there are people here, from all walks of life, that understand what you are going through as a new quitter, as a mid-range quitter, and as a long term quitter! There are people here who, if you will, have "been there and done that". There are "First Responders" to introduce you to the site! There are "Professors" who have a vast storehouse of knowledge that they will share with you! There are the "Cheerleaders who will always be here with encouragement when things get rocky! There are the "Dispenser of Tough Love" who will tell you what you need to hear, even when you really don't want to hear it! There are the "Motivators" who lead by EXample and always have a way of making you better than you think you can be! There are the "Entertainers" who can make you laugh when you want to cry. And there are "The Fighters" here who fighting everyday to stay alive while they wait for new lungs, or a miracle to save them! They selflessly share their agony, and misery, in an effort to save others from the fate that has befallen them! Why does this site make a difference? It is the people you find here!

#2. The answer to this one is pretty simple! On-going support! Many of us have support in the early days of our quits. It comes from family and friends! However many of them are not smokers, and never have been! They think if you quit for a week., or two weeks, or a month, that you done, and it is over! This is a horrible addiction and it requires on-going support! The people here understand that, and they are always here for you! Why do people finally find success here? It is because of the people they find here!

#3. The reason that I say I owe my quit success to this site because of a phenomenon I discovered here! I have termed it "Collateral Kindness" Helping yourself by helping others! What a way to quit! What a way to live! The way that you help people get to the top of a mountain is to go with them! When they get there, you are there too! The day that I came to understand that, was the day that I knew, without a doubt, I would never put another cigarette in my mouth! Why do I owe my quit to this site? It is because of the people who showed me "Collateral Kindness"!

#4. The reason that I stay here is because I have learned something that I feel a need to share! The greatest yearning of all animals is the desire to be Free! Some years ago a very intelligent chimp was taught sign language. The first complete sentence he signed from his cage was "Let me out"! The people of this site and the "Collateral Kindness" that I have found here, have have shown me the path to FREEDOM! Now that I am indeed FREE, I want to share that path with those who come behind me! I feel an obligation to those who are still shackled, and live as slaves to their addiction! Look to us my friends! We will hold open the doors to your cages! And we will "Let you out"! Live FREE!! And live well!                        Tommy
