Sandy Continues......

Posted by pir8fan Oct 29, 2012

........to follow pretty much the projected track from yesterday. Overnight she has gained some wind velocity and now has maximum sustained winds(More than 1 minute) of 90 mph. That will decrease over the next 24 hours! The major problem with this storm is not so much the wind, but the water! This is especally true for those of you along the coast to the north of landfall! Take precautions and do not ignore warnings!

For those of you who are in the path of the eye, please remember that there will be a period of very calm as the eye passes over you. Do not mistake this for the end of the storm! There is a back side to the storm and while it is not as strong, it is still dangerous!

Hopefully by now you have your supplies laid in! Drinking water and non-perishable food, batteries and battery operated radio! If your water comes to you house vis an electric pump, fill the bathtub with water that you can use to force the commode to flush! Fully charge you cell phone! If you do not feel 100% safe in your home, it is time to get out! Do no wait until there is no where to go and no way to get there!

This is a storm that will cost a lot of money! Do not let it cost lives! Be prepared and stay safe!

Sandy Update!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 28, 2012

The 8:00 advisory from the National Hurricand Center shows that Sandy is still moving to the Northeast! She is projected to start to turn North and the Northwest in the next couple of hours! The longer she stays on a Northeast course, the better! A couple of extra hours of that could make a huge difference! I hope she will do just that! I will try to post after the 11:00 advisory!!

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL ABOARD!!!!!!!!! Tommy

I wish I had a way of knowing what will really happen with this storm! I have watched hurricanes all my life, and I am fascinated by them! Here is what I do know! Yesterday the storm had sustained winds of 105 MPH! As it moves over cooler water it loses strength! This morning it is down to 80 MPH! That is still a strong storm, but the degree of dissipation is encouraging!

In Florida they had constant warnings yesterday, in spite of the fact that the storm had almost no chance of coming toward us! That is what I call the weather people selling bread, and milk! They do seem to exaggerate the potential! They would prefer to have you prepare, and nothing happen, than to have you unware of the potential! That is reasonable!

I hope you will all be just as reasonable! Watch the storm and prepare! But do not let yourself get stressed out about it! The best we can do in a battle with nature is prepare for it! No amount of stress, or worry will change what will happen!

I believe that the storm will lose a lot of it's strenght before it gets to a landfall! I hope and believe that the "Frankenstorm" will become a much more minor weather event than predicted! BUT! Go ahead and prepare for me to be wrong, but let us all pray that I am right! My prayers and thoughts are with you all!         Tommy

Want! Need! Love!!!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 19, 2012

Yesterday, I was standing outside talking with my boss when she pulled out a cigarette! Being always the southern gentleman, I reached for my lighter, and was surprised to find that I did not have one! It took me about 2 and a half years to quit carrying a lighter everyday! Feeling it in my pocket reminded me that I did not need it anymore, and at the same time reminded me that there are people who still need one! They are not bad people! They just are not ready to learn yet!

Back on point! It was one of those rare occasions when a cigarette smelled good! I can't say that I really wanted one! It did refresh my memory of smoking, and because I have been FREE so long, I could look at it objectively! It was easy to realize why I did not want one! Over the years, I smoked hundreds of thousands of cigarettes that I did not want! I smoked them because I needed them! Freedom is when you do not need them anymore! You do not want them anymore! In truth you have not wanted them for a long time! Your need can keep you admitting that! Break Free of the need!

Free from want!     Free from need!         FREEDOM I LOVE YOU!!!

CHANGING TRAINS!!!!

Good evening all my fellow EXer's! I want to tell you from the very start, that I am writing this blog with very mixed emotions! One of the accomplishment in my life of which I am most proud is the establishment of the Freedom Train! Thinking of it fills my heart with pride! Today the Train ran for the 617th Day! Realizing that it has grown into a monster that we can no longer maintain and support brings a tear to my eye! I want to thank every single person who has contributed to its success! And that is pretty much all of you!

If you ever rode, or made a comment on someone elses ride on the Freedom Train, you are part of it's success! If you are Maggie, Marcie, LindaN, Cyn, or any of the others who kept up with the milestones, or wrote the blogs that kept the Train on the tracks, I am forever in your debt, as are so many others here! You have worked tirelessly with no compensation, aside from the gratitude of those who celebrated their milestones with us! It is the most awesome display of love for your fellow man that I have ever have the privilege to witness!

For a while now we have been facing the reality that the Train is more work than we are capable of doing! The hours and hours required to track quit dates, relapses, re-starts, and those who just disappear, boggles the mind! And it has become impossible! For those of us on the inside, it has been a struggle to find a way to keep from retiring the Freedom Train! We do not want to do that! Ultimately that decision will come from you!

Starting Monday October 15,2012 the staff of the Freedom Train will quit tracking milestones! We plan to post the Freedom Train everyday, and we will invite you to come aboard and announce your own milestone, or the milestone(s) of your friend(s)! Traditionally we celebrate Days 50, Days 100 and multiples of 100, and One Year, and multiple of One Year! As long as people want to come to the Freedom Train and celebrate, we will continue to post it! So, my dear Friends, the survival of the Freedom Train is going to be placed in your hands! I hope you will keep it running! Should you choose to let it die off, I thank everyone who has ever been a part of it, from the bottom of my slightly damaged heart, for all the memories, and the pride you have allowed me! And today I ask you all to give a standing ovation to MAGGIE, MARCIE, LINDAN, AND CYN!!!!

And always remember: IF YOU ARE NOT RIDING WITH US, YOU ARE MISSING THE TRAIN! Tommy

Thank you Mike n @lanta!!!!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 4, 2012

One week ago, in honor of the first 1000 Days of my quit, our Friend, Mike n @lanta, sent me a story he had written about me! Today with permission from him I am posting this tribute to share with all of you! I hope you all can find something useful here as you make your own transition! I wish everyone FREEDOM!     Tommy

   Freedom Train
I haven’t always been what I am today. This is a good life without all the smoke & the complications it brings. But let me begin elsewhere.
I was a smoke burning engine pulling tobacco cars out of North Carolina. I was new, strong & full of myself. I could do anything& loved pullin those tobacco cars. Every day 20-30 were nothing for me. If things got in a bind I just bucked up& pulled more. Those should have been good years for me & I honestly thought they were. But times change & tobacco was getting old for me. I wanted something else…didn’t know what but while I was searching I continued my same old routine.

I was making a tobacco run one evening & ran into one of those electric trains. Man that thing was slick. So quiet with no rumbling& wheezing in the engine. I remember thinking it would be nice to be without all the smoke & soot sticking to me not to mention what those things were doing to my insides. I struck up a conversation with him & found that he’d been just like me. He worked really hard all alone & refitted himself with the electric engine. It had taken him years to get it right & thought he could have done better with a little help. He called himself a Freedom Train. Free from all that smoke. So we finally said goodbye& parted ways. I didn’t know how I would do it, I had no plan & didn’t know where to start but I swore to myself that one day that would be me.

After so many years life gets in the way & you kinda forget about things you thought were important to you. One day, you look around& wonder what happened to your life. The change had always been in the back of my mind but I just kept on putting it off.
Once again I crossed paths with another electric that called themselves a Freedom Train. This time I made sure that I knew how they did it. They had come across a place called EX of all things. Everything was free. They provided all of the tools & any parts I would need. I only had to do the work myself. There were many at EX that were more than happy to show me how. They were always there when I needed anything at all. They were there when I was frustrated at the task & kept me from giving up. It would be so much more worth the whole ordeal to stick with it they told me.

It took some time but I was finally outfitted with my new parts. I was electric & no smoke & soot tarnished me inside or out. Trying to get used to it I would occasionally think it too tough & want my old parts back but I just couldn't let my new friends down at EX.

Now it’s been 1000 days since my changeover. I’m comfortable with my new body. Yeah there was damage from so many years pulling those tobacco cars but I can’t dwell on that. All I can do is try to better myself & pay back what was given to me. It was a formidable task in the beginning but I got it done & work on myself continually.
They arrive at EX by the hundreds every day wanting to change. Most can’t come up with the courage to do the work but the few that do reward us with their efforts. Some even stay to help out. We’re proud of every single Freedom Train here. We’re all so grateful for what was given us & just wouldn’t feel right without giving back. We’d be rotting in an old rail yard by now if we hadn’t found EX.
My name is Tommy…& I’m a Freedom Train

A quick good morning!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 4, 2012

I hope everyone is having a great day!

I just wanted to give you a quick update on my heart cath yesterday! I was released from the hospital about 5:30! Between hurting and drugs, I have pretty much slept since then! One of the grafts in one of the by-passes is somewhat blocked by scar tissue! I guess you can't prevent scar tissue! The Dr. inserted a small balloon and inflated it to try to streach the artery! Not sure if that works or for how long! If it stays open for three months that is a good sign! In the mean time I have to keep my nitro glycerin handy and sleep with a nitro patch on every night!

Such are the joys of smoking like I did! Just think if you smoke this could be you one day! Does it sound like fun? Do you think it is worth it??? Take it from me! Now that I have been there and done that, it is not worth it! And it is no fun at all!! Whatever you think is a reason to smoke, re-think it! Freedom is with-in your grasp! The great State of New Hampshire has a motto that says "Live Free or Die"! I am just telling you to live Free! Or die??? Your call!                          Tommy

The Second Thousand!

Posted by pir8fan Oct 2, 2012

Wishing a very good morning to all of my fellow EXer's here in NoEXcuseville! I am back from my cruise and have read a lot of what I missed! The most important event in my quit was the celebration of my induction into the "Quad Squad"! I want to articulate my most sincere Thanks to Cyn for picking me up on the Freedom Train, and to all of You who sent your well wishes, and congratulations! I am sorry I could not be here with you for that celebration!

The first thousand day are the hardest, Right? No, really, the point in my quit where I knew for sure I would never smoke again was around the 12 week mark! I believe that this is different for everyone! I know that the second thousand will be easy! Smoking is not a thought or an option! I would greet a person offering me a cigarette today in much the same manner I would greet someone pointing a gun at me! It would not be pretty!

A quick follow up on my health and the cruise! The cruise took me to wonderful places! Unfortunately, I was not able to enjoy them very much! On the first day of the cruise I began to EXperience angina! As the days passed the pain came more often and lasted longer! I was not able to walk long distances from the ship to pick-up points for various EXcursions! Hopefully I will get a chance to go back one day and see all that I missed! The events on the ship were great! The food was good and I enjoyed my time contributing to the well being of the casino operation! I also got two new pieces of art work!! My gift to me for 1000 days of Freedom!

I was able to get "rushed" in to see my cardiologist yesterday! I am a bit unhappy to report that I am scheduled for a cardiac catheterization tomorrow morning! It is apparent that there is still something wrong with the workings of my heart! I guess I will know more tomorrow! I am hoping it is something simple! I am not sure I could deal with them re-opening my chest! I guess I will do whatever is necessary! This is the price I am paying for all those years of smoking! The price of that "It will never happen to me" attitude! It is happening to me!

If you have quit stay quit! If you are thinking of quitting, do it now! Do not wait until you find out what it is like to have the thing that "Will never happen to you" actually happen to you! Take me at my word! This is no fun at all!

I EXtend my love to all of you,and wish you continued FREEDOM!!!              Tommy
