Will cooler heads prevail?-1

Posted by pir8fan Dec 21, 2011

I come to my favorite community this morning, and find it in turmoil! Seems we have some new badges! That does not mean that there is a new sheriff in town and that we need to move!

In my efforts to help people break this addiction, I have to admit that I have made some mistakes! So have some others! I think we all would agree that the site changes a while back that made EX "not so compatible" with Internet Explorer is a disaster. I can't fix that, and neither can you! But that is not going to keep me from doing what I can to EXtend "Collateral Kindness" to those who come looking for a hand! And it will help no one if I get huffy and take my ball and go home!

I am sure you all remember when Hurricane Katrina devistated communities along the Gulf Coast! The people of one major city, for the most part, wrung their hands, and screamed and cried and waited for the government to come a fix their community! The people along the Mississippi Coast looked around figured out what they could do and did it! The things that they could not do they left for those who could! Everybody trusted their neighbors to do what they they could and their communities were rebuilt! So on this one, I am going to trust my neighbors!

I understand the stress of the Season! But, I also understand why I chose to remain a  part of this community! As far as the badges are concerned, am I ignorant, or ambivalent? I don't know, and I don't care! They are not what I am here for, and they are not what this community is about! I invite you all to join me as I re-focus my attention on my quit and yours! Let us come together and do the work that we are here for! That is all that I have got on this one!!      Tommy

The Freedom Train!! 12/19/11

Posted by pir8fan Dec 19, 2011

'Tis six days before Christmas, and all over the site,

all our fellow EXer’s are fighting the good fight.

The Freedom Train is running, to places far and near,

spreading its message, of celebration and cheer!

We all take pause from our Christmas chores, and things,

to celebrate each milestone, and the joy that it brings!

We give thanks to our heroes, both present and past,

as we renew our daily pledge, “this quit is our last”

We look to our families, parents, children, and Honey,

knowing we give them a gift, you can’t buy with money!

As this next week passes, and we head to the New Year,

we have learned that our Freedom is nothing to fear!

So, whether you celebrate Christmas, or for some other reason,

we all send you our Love, in this Holiday Season!

Thank you all for making The Freedom Train successful!

Tommy, Maggie, Marcie, Linda, Cyndie, and Sheri

This Train is bound for FREEDOM from the Evils of tobacco and smoking!!

"IF YOU ARE NOT RIDING WITH US, YOU ARE MISSING THE TRAIN"

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL ABOARD!!!!!!!!! Tommy

In the early days of our quits we come here and pour our hearts out to strangers! We talk about our struggles! We openly admit the troubles we are encountering on our path to Freedom! Soon these strangers become our friends! All of a sudden thing are different! How many of you have said or thought " I don't want to burden my friends with my problems."?

I just put on a fresh pot of coffee, and I would like to invite everyone to wake up and have a sniff! Look around at the people who have been here from the first day of this site! Look at those of us that have been here for a couple of years! Look at the people who work so hard to put  the Freedom Train on the tracks everyday! Do you really think we are here to make friends and socialize? Friends are a "Collateral Benefit" of being here! They are not the purpose! The reason we are here is because we genuinely care about helping you quit, and stay quit!

When you internalize the issues you are facing, you are not giving us the chance to help you! When you wait until you have smoked to reach out, you are not giving us a chance to help save your quit! Knowing that we have helped someone, or saved someones quit, is the reward that we get for our efforts here! Please do not deny us a chance to do what we live here for! Most of all, and more importantly, do not deny yourself a chance to succeed! You deserve a Smoke Free Life! You can have one! Please, give us the chance to help!

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL ABOARD!!!!!!!!! Tommy

I know there are a lot of people out there who preparing to quit! Some of you are commenting here and some of you are just lurking and reading and learning what works for some of us! My guess is that a good number of you are looking toward New Years Eve as a quit date. Great! Start the new year with a renewed effort to improve your life!

I do not think this is the best plan! Has anyone ever started a year with grand plans before? How did that work for you? A lot of folks make "New Years Resolutions" with the idea that they will try to do better! In the back of their minds they know that they will only succeed for a limited time! These resolutions are usually something we try! Quitting should not be something we TRY to do! Do it!!! Do it today! By New Years you will have a few weeks under your belt and can draw strength from helping the folks that do wait! I looked, last year, at a large number of people who quit as a "resolution". I am not seeing many of them today! We make these resolutions with the expectation that they will be broken! There are not many thing sadder than a broken quit! Set yourself up for success! Quit now! You can do it!! We will help!!!                    Tommy

I am 5 Years Old Today!

Posted by pir8fan Dec 6, 2011

Some of you may say that I act that way everyday! But today it is true! My doctor in Mt Pleasant, SC said so! Five years ago today they sliced me like a side of beef, and removed my left kidney! Renal cell carcinoma! Kidney cancer! I was the luckiest man to ever have cancer! They took the kidney and the cancer out! 10 days later they took the staples out! I ask the doctor when I needed to come back, and he said "You don't"! Just that simple! No radiation! No chemo! Doctor Thomas said "You get a second life. A new birthday." The whole thing scared me bad enough that I quit smoking for 6 days! Then I started back! It took me 3 years and 25 day after that surgery, and one heart attack, to get it! But I finally quit! Forever! How did I do it? Cold Turkey? Not exactally! I took large doses of  support from this site every single day! Thank you my Friends!

I almost waited too long! Learn from my mistake! Do not wait! The time to quit is now! Quit and stay quit! You can do it! We will help!                  Tommy

700 Days!! What happened???

Posted by pir8fan Dec 2, 2011

As a lot of you know, I came to this quit kicking, and screaming, because my ability to smoke was under attack by my insurance company, and confiscatory government taxes, that discriminate against one demographic. Smokers! I still recognize the hypocrisy of a government that refuses to make tobacco illegal, but never fails to add a tax on it when they get the chance. But I digress!

What happened? On the eighth day of my quit I saw a TV commercial for this site! I came here, and joined, expecting to find a bunch of people with nothing better to do than tell me how to run my life! What I found was much different! I found a group of very caring people who just ignored my rants, and tried to keep me focused on quitting! After about a month, I gave up on starting a fight, and recognized the environment I was in! I discovered what I later termed “Collateral Kindness”! Helping yourself by helping others! What a way to quit! What a way to live! What has happened since then is a story all its own! Here are some of the things that have happened.

I have met people here who share and care about people that they will never meet!  People who give to others, with no expectation of those people ever giving anything back!

I have found friends here that will indeed be friends for life! This in spite of the fact that I may never actually meet them! I have even met a person that could very well be the best friend that I have ever had.

I have witnessed courage in the face of overwhelming odds! I have seen people like Kellie, and JoJo who are battling for their lives, but find the time to try to save the rest of us from the fate that has befallen them!

I have witnessed faith! Look no farther that my good friend Dawn. The string of bad things that have come to her, one after another, is impossible for me to wrap my mind around! But every day she faces life with complete faith in God! There are so many others here who are guided by unshakable faith. They provide a sparkling example for the rest of us!

On, or about day 85 of my quit, I felt the pangs of a malfunctioning heart. For about a week afterward, I sat around waiting to die, and not really caring if I did. Then I met a Lady that encouraged me to quit sitting around feeling sorry for myself. She motivated me to get off my backside and go find a job! She convinced me that my life was worth living! Her name is Sheri, and I will always be grateful to her!

I have met great Wordsmiths here. They craft compelling stories to make this journey both doable, and understandable! We have fantastic Cheerleaders here who will always be there for those who are down! There are First Responders that welcome the new members to the community!

Most of all I have seen a community come together as a family, and work diligently for the common good. We have our disagreements, like all families. But in the end we are all here to support each other, and welcome the new members of the community. The Veterans, the Midrange Quitters, those that are in No-Man’s-Land, and those who are still new here! We all come together and contribute what we can! So, in the words of Indin Girl and so many others, “Take what you need and leave the rest”!

So, Thank You my Friends, for being my Friends, and helping me reach 700 Days of FREEDOM! This is a great community. There can be no better place to live!                                      Tommy
