Pardon me

I hate blowing my own horn (but not bad enough to stop myself) So here goes!!! In a comment on someone blog the other day, I coined a new phrase. After giving it considerable thought, I realized that it defines what happens at this site. We all know that in war you drop a bomb that blows up its intendes target. That is good! Anything else it blows up is called " Collateral Damage ". It is an unintended consequence.

The phrase I coined the other day was " Collaterial Kindness ". You see it here everyday!! People come to this site everyday under the guise of learning how to quit smoking. I say "HORSEFEATHERS". There are a lot of folks here that will tell you how to quit! Don't put one in your mouth, and don't light it!! We all already know how to quit.

What we come here looking for is self esteem, confidence, reassurances, friends and confidants that understand us and what we are going through. We are looking for someone to beleive in us and help us beleive in ourselves. Some come not really caring about themselves, because they are not sure anyone else cares about them. People come here looking for pride because somewhere along the way they have lost it. People come here looking for their identity, because they lost it. I am sure you can add to this list, and I could go on for quite a while.

All of the things people come here looking for are here. Whatever you need, just ask, some one is willing to give it to you. It may be a kick in the seat of your pants or a pat on your back, two things very close together, yet a long ways apart. Some of the kindest people on earth call this site home! People come here and find what they need! Then a strange phenominon occurs. People suddenly start passing that help on to others! Collatreial Kindness!!

People came here looking for help. When they found it they started giving it away! Unintended consequences!! And one day these poor broken people, who came here looking for help realize, they brought their own help with them. They had the power to do it all along. They just needed someone to tell them to click their heels together three times and repeat "There is no place like home"     And they all lived happily ever after!!!!     The End

I read a blog from yesterday, and it irritated me.( I know none of you knew I could get irritated ). The person said when they became a wealthy philanthripist They would buy patches and gum for all! While helping people quit is an honorable goal, I beleive the plan misses the mark. To help people quit, You don't have to be wealthy. You don't have to be a philanthripist. You just have to be an EXAMPLE!!!!!!!!!

What a Life!!

Good Afternoon,

To all my friends here, I have not been kidnapped by a wild tribe of Amazons( yet, but I am still holding out hope). I have fallen victim to a different fate. I am working!!! I have quit waiting for for the government to come and rescue me, (like they promised before the election) and went out and got a job. I am taking responsibility for myself. I realize this is a radical plan in today's Nanny State mentality, but I am doing it. This results in a lot less time to sit at home and enjoy this site. I have been on in short intervals this week, but I have spent more time thinking about here than being here. I came to a few conclusions:

1. I  am probably quite gulible. The cold hard truth is that I may be the only person here that is from planet earth. You could all be from another planet. I have no way to prove any of you are real!!

2. I really don't care. What ever planet you are from, you were a Godsend to me. I would not be 107 days smoke free/ninotine free with out you. So, if you are here from another planet to make me quit so you can have the tobacco, you won! Go ahead and take my share.

3. If indeed you came from another world, you did your homework well! You have impersonated the most loving, caring and sharing group of people ever assembled in one place. I am proud of my association with you! But you did more. You created a place where all of the emotions, and twist and turns of everyday life exist. On any given day at this site you can find the entire gamunt of emotion. You can find pain and suffering, you can find the loss of a loved one. You can find abuse, You can find trauma. You can find mis-understanding, anger and rage. But you can also find comfort and peace. You can find support. You can find those who put out the fires of anger and distrust. You can find celebration!!! You can find happiness. You can find not only giddiness but also the cure for it!!! What you find most of all is someone who has been there and done that. They will listen to you ramble and then steer you back on course. They will tell you the things that you need to know, even if you don't want to know them. There are thing to learn! It may take time to realize their importance, but you gotta learn them!

4. What ever world you exer's are from, it is the kind of place I want to live in!!!   Tommy

Quit Smoking 101 !!!

Posted by pir8fan Apr 11, 2010

What a week it has been!! Let me start by saying I owe thank you notes to everybody!! I am sure a lot of you know that yesterday was day 100 for me!! All of the notes and blogs and the outpouring of love and caring has truely humbled me. PLEASE if you don't get a note from me do not take personally. I did a very poor job of keeping track of everyone who wrote. If I could remember who I have already sent notes too that would help. Truthfully to write back to everyone I will need to learn how to type!! You folks never fail to amaze me. Your capacity for giving, and caring and sharing knows no bounds!! Thank you each and everyone for allowing me to be a part of this community!

I want to give a quick shout out to Ali, who has struggled for so long and so hard. If you don't know, she is on her 5th smoke free day and on her way to a smoke free life. Go Ali. We are all behind you!

Sheri tryed to take week-end off to " treat herself Gently ". Unfortunately her caring for us prevented her from getting the total relaxation she so richly deserves. We love you sheri!!

Jonescarp made biscuits and gravy for all of us yesterday! We found out some people had led such sheltered lives that did not know about biscuits and gravy!!

Many new exer's joined us this week. We welcome them. And warn them. We have a great family here, but like all families everywhere, we have moments of disagreement. We hurt each others feelings, but we don't stop caring about each other. So join us, but bring a thick skin. We may offend you. But if you listen we will help you quit!!

All of you exer's, we have another week behind us, and the future awaits us with open arms! The only limits are the ones we put on ourselves!!! Have a great Smoke free week my friends. Tommy

Today is day 99!! It will be the last day of my life that I am a double digit quitter!! WOW! What an incredible job you have done!! Thank you all!

Some of you may recall that I came here not even wanting to quit. I ranted and raved about the government forcing me to give up. I am still outraged at government intrusion in out private lives, as our nation slides deeper and deeper into the hands of those who would make us dependent on them. But I digress!! You people ignored my rants and stayed focused on one thing!! Quitting! I did not want to quit, but you helped me. Now I have to admit that I kinda like be a quitter. But there is more! I know that in grand scheme of thing, saving the health of one old fat man does not amount to a hill of beans. But there is soooooooo much more.

A few short months ago, I would not have given this site or you people the time of day if I had been up to my rear end in wrist watches. I just did not care. I was ready to die. And I am still Ok with it!! But the people at this site welcomed me into a community that is so much bigger than the sum of its parts. The caring and compassion, and the understanding that is on display at this site on a daily basis is in a word AWESOME!!! I found a place where people who will never meet face to face, put themselves out there for each other. There is little selfishness here. Just people trying to help each other. As a part of this community, I feel that I have become a better person. I still have a long ways to go, but I am a better human being because of YOU & YOU & YOU & YOU!! All of you have contributed to the sucess that I have had here. I can never do enough to repay you! My pledge is that I will do everthing that I can for you and the exer's to come. From the bottom of my slightly damaged heart I thank each and everyone of you! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!! Tommy

Read a blog today titled SUSPICIOUS, and I can't get it out of my head. The gentleman makes the point that we don't know who we are putting ourselves out there for. Point made and well taken! My question is WHO CARES?

When we come to this site we don't know anything about the people except what they tell us or what we read between the lines. We don't really know gender, race, ethinicity, age or station in life. The picture of the most beautiful woman here may have been posted by a man. Pictures of men could be posted by women. Who do you trust?? Who do you need to trust??

The only thing for sure is that the caring and compassion shown on a regular basis at this site makes a difference to people. I know that it has for me!! I know that I talked to a young lady today that took something from one of my blog and made a difference in her life! I'm guessing that made her feel better. Learning about it sure made me feel better. I think most of us came here looking for help, and we found it. Almost without thought we started to give back to the community that helped us. We have built a good community, of good people. Maybe not everyone is worthy of our trust. But when you put ideas and advice out there you don't know who is reading it. You may litterally save the life of a person you never will meet! Is there any greater charity than that! I don't think so. I think I want to live in a community like the one we have here!!!

Everyone here has my best wishes whether I agree with everything you say or not!!  Tommy

Penny for your thoughts!!

Posted by pir8fan Apr 5, 2010

Good Smoke free afternoon everyone!! Thanks to all of you for helping me reach day 95!!!

Last night about 11;30 I went out to walk my dog. His name is Max! It was a nice warm Southwest Florida night. As we were ambling along, in the glare of a street light , I spotted a penny. There was a time in my life when I would have just left it there. But, I picked it up and put it in my pocket. This morning Max woke me up and told me it was time for his morning walk. I told him I would like to sleep a little longer. He explained what he was going to do to the carpet if I didn't get up. He won. I got up and we went for a long walk. As we were walking along I spotted another penny and again I picked it up and put it in my pocket. Not two minutes latter I found another penny. Now there is a little voice in the back of my head saying "what's up with all the pennies". I spent a few minute reflecting on that question. Those of you who know a little bit about me know that I am at the lowest point of my life. Physically, Financially, and on top of that I am giving up smoking. I came to two conclusions about the pennies.

1. I am looking down way to much!!! I need to hold my head back up high,so that I can see my way out of my problems!!!!

2. When you look close at a penny there is a message of hope on there. It says "IN GOD WE TRUST" ! Now I really have no idea how those pennies came to be where I could find them. But I have no intention of ignoring their message. When we have more on our plates than we can handle, there is a place to look too!!!

There are my thoughts! What are you thinking?

1. Don't put all your eggs in one basket

2. Everyone needs a friend that is all ears

3. All work and no play will make you a basket case

4. There is no such thing as too much candy

5. A cute tail will attract attention

6. Everyone is entitled to a bad hare day

7. Let happy thoughts multiply like rabbits

8. Keep your paws off of other peoples jelly beans

9. The grass is always greener in someone elses basket

10. To show your true colors you must come out of your shell

11. The best things come in small (sugar coated) packages

12. It is Ok for some body parts to be floppy

I am not preaching

Tomorrow all around the world we Christians will celebrate the resurrection of Christ. Those among us of the Jewish faith will for the most part politely ignor us. The atheish will scorn us.

With all that said I would like to propose that we all take a moment tomorrow and celebrate our our resurrection.

We the lepers on the 21st century have risen from the ashes and stench of our own making. While I can not imply that the devine hand of God has touched us, it is a miracle of sorts that so many people from all over the country, and Canada ( I haven't forgotten you Jackie) could become brothers and sisters for the same cause. Like all sibblings since time began, we have our differences of opinion, and we squabble among ourselves. But we have caring, compassion and love for each other. We take the struggles of our brothers and sisters as our own. So tomorrow at some point take a moment to give thanks for those who have never laid eyes on you but still care about you.

I care about every one of you! I thank you, for all that you have done to help me!! You have truely made my life better, and I beleive you have made me a better person.          Tommy

Quick Question???

Posted by pir8fan Apr 2, 2010

I have been smoke-free/nicotine-free for 92 days now! Can anyone tell me why I still carry this cigarette lighter everywhere I go???

Researchers from the EPA and the CDC are set to release a study today that shows tobacco smoke may not be harmful to your health. The study shows that pre 1960's smokers had relatively few health problems. Then Gillette introduced the "Cricket" which is a small butane lighter. The success that they had led to the Bic lighter. As more and more people used these devices they inhaled more and more burned butane gas into their systems. That butane gas has led to almost all the health problems associated with smoking. The tobacco industry is stunned with one official saying " This is so on target! I can not beleive we missed it ourselves.'

I just thought you would want to know. Enjoy your APRIL 1st

I am back!

So, this horse walks into a bar. The bartender walks over and says " Hello my friend. Why the long face?"
