Beautiful Day

Posted by OldBones-Larry May 30, 2020

This day is starting great.

Awoke to temps just below 60 and the sky is clear.

No rain in the forecast for the weekend either.

I'm sure it will get a bit warm today, but, that is fine as long as Father Sun is shining bright to light the way for all.

May Creator be with you all and keep you safe this day.

I went down this morning to the camel pens to check on Babbette, (George's girlfriend).

She seems to be fine and doing well.

However, she should be a bit miffed with George!!

I found six of the others were "in the family way" also.

Seems George is a playboy.

Can't change the facts now, so we will make the best of things.

Don't you get a surprise by going and having a drink.

You might wake up to a pack laying somewhere in your house and stubbed out butts.

Drinking and quitting do not go well together in most cases.

Heed Nancy's message about drinking and sickorettes.

Just don't do it.

One step, and then another, will get you to where you want to be.

Danger In The Old Ruins

Posted by OldBones-Larry May 28, 2020

I rode out to the old ruins this morning to make see if Nic's gang was there planning mischief.

As I prowled the old buildings, I kept an eye out for my legless friends.

I found these guys sunning.

I carefully went around each of them so as to not disturb them.

I rounded a corner of a building and looked into a window.

This is the site that greeted my old eyes.

I didn't disturb them as I want Nic or his men to stumble into them.

I must warn all travelers to give the old ruins a wide berth as you pass them.

Watch for traps at all times.

The oasis are safe and you should take the opportunity to rest at each one of them.

Travel safely my friends.

One step, and then another, will get you to where you want to be.

I just returned from a ceremony that the Sheik asked me to attend.

I was led to a wadi deep in the desert.

They asked that I keep the location secret from the world, and so I shall.

The ceremony began by remembering the Bedoin that have perished in the past.

Some from age, others from battle wounds.

I knew some of those that are gone and morned along with the others.

Then the new warriors were welcomed into the group.

They swore their sacred oaths and became full warriors for the rest of their days.

The Sheik told me that I may report on one small part of their oath.

From now on, they must swear to protect all travelers in NML.

They are to fight Nic and his horde on all fronts.

I was told that this is a new part to their ceremony.

I thanked them on behalf of everyone that has passed through NML, and those traveling through it now.

The older warriors stood and repeated this same vow in my presence.

Keep a wary eye out for traps and Nic's crew.

They will do all in their power to break you down and reclaim you into their fold.

Take your journey slow as you need and always stay safe.

One step, and then another, will get you to where you want to be.

Our Missing This Day

"Missing Man Table & Honors Ceremony"
As you entered the dining area, you may have noticed a table at the front, raised to call your
attention to its purpose -- it is reserved to honor our missing loved ones [or missing comrades
in arms, for veterans].
Set for six, the empty places represent Americans still [our men] missing from each of the five
services -- Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard – and civilians. This Honors
Ceremony symbolizes that they are with us, here in spirit.
Some [here] in this room were very young when they were sent into combat; however, all
Americans should never forget the brave men and women who answered our nation's call [to
serve] and served the cause of freedom in a special way.
I would like to ask you to stand, and remain standing for a moment of silent prayer, as the
Honor Guard places the five service covers and a civilian cap on each empty plate.

Tomb Guard Facts

Posted by OldBones-Larry May 24, 2020
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
1. How many steps does the guard take during his
walk across the Tomb of the Unknown and why?
21 steps. It alludes to the twenty-one gun salute, which is the highest honor given any military or foreign dignitary.
2. How long does he wait after his about face to begin his return walk and why?
21 seconds for the same reason as above.
3. Why are his gloves wet?
His gloves are moistened to prevent his losing his grip on the rifle.
4. Does he carry his rifle on the same shoulder all the time and if not, why not?
He carries the rifle on the shoulder away from the tomb. After his march across the path, he executes an about face and moves the rifle to the outside shoulder.
5. How often are the guards changed?
Guards are changed every thirty minutes, twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.
6. What are the physical traits of the guard limited to?
For a person to apply for guard duty at the tomb, he must be between 5' 10' and 6' 2' tall and his waist size cannot exceed 30.' Other requirements of the Guard:
They must commit 2 years of life to guard the tomb, live in a barracks under the tomb, and cannot drink any alcohol on or off duty for the rest of their lives.
They cannot swear in public for the rest of their lives and cannot disgrace the uniform {fighting} or the tomb in any way. After two years, the guard is given a wreath pin that is worn on their lapel signifying they served as guard of the tomb. There are only 400 presently worn.
The guard must obey these rules for the rest of their lives or give up the wreath pin.
The shoes are specially made with very thick soles to keep the heat and cold from their feet. There are metal heel plates that extend to the top of the shoe in order to make the loud click as they come to a halt.
There are no wrinkles, folds or lint on the uniform.
Guards dress for duty in front of a full-length mirror.
The first six months of duty a guard cannot talk to anyone, nor watch TV.
All off duty time is spent studying the 175 notable people laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. A guard must memorize who they are and where they are interred.
Among the notables are: President Taft, Joe E. Lewis {the boxer} and Medal of Honor recipient Audie Murphy, {the most decorated soldier of WWII} of Hollywood fame.
Every guard spends five hours a day getting his uniforms ready for guard duty.
In 2003 as Hurricane Isabelle was approaching Washington , DC , our US Senate/House took 2 days off with anticipation of the storm. On the ABC evening news, it was reported that because of the dangers from the hurricane, the military members assigned the duty of guarding the
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier were given permission to suspend the assignment.
They respectfully declined the offer, 'No way, Sir!' Soaked to the skin, marching in the pelting rain of a tropical storm, they said that guarding the Tomb was not just an assignment, it was the highest honor that can
be afforded to a serviceperson.
The tomb has been patrolled continuously, 24/7, since 1930.
God Bless and Keep Them
I don't usually suggest that many Facebook posts be forwarded, but I'd be very proud if this one reached as many people as possible.
We can be very proud of our young men and women in the service no matter where they serve.
Duty - Honor - Country

By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks still bravely singing fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead: Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved: and now we lie
In Flanders fields!

Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw
The torch: be yours to hold it high
If ye break faith with us who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

Composed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915
during the second battle of Ypres, Belgium

The Bivouac of the Dead
by Theodore O'Hara

The muffled drum's sad roll has beat
The soldier's last tattoo;
No more on life's parade shall meet
That brave and fallen few.
On fame's eternal camping ground
Their silent tents are spread,
And glory guards, with solemn round,
The bivouac of the dead.

No rumor of the foe's advance
Now swells upon the wind;
No troubled thought at midnight haunts
Of loved ones left behind;
No vision of the morrow's strife
The warrior's dream alarms;
No braying horn, nor screaming fife,
At dawn shall call to arms.

Their shivered swords are red with rust,
Their plumèd heads are bowed;
Their haughty banner, trailed in dust,
Is now their martial shroud.
And plenteous funeral tears have washed
The red stains from each brow,
And the proud forms, by battle gashed,
Are free from anguish now.

The neighing troop, the flashing blade,
The bugle's stirring blast,
The charge, the dreadful cannonade,
The din and shout are past;
Nor war's wild note nor glory's peal
Shall thrill with fierce delight
Those breasts that never more may feel
The rapture of the fight.

Like the fierce northern hurricane
That sweeps his great plateau,
Flushed with the triumph yet to gain,
Came down the serried foe.
Who heard the thunder of the fray
Break o'er the field beneath,
Knew well the watchword of that day
Was "Victory or death."

Long had the doubtful conflict raged
O'er all that stricken plain,
For never fiercer fight had waged
The vengeful blood of Spain;
And still the storm of battle blew,
Still swelled the gory tide;
Not long, our stout old chieftain knew,
Such odds his strength could bide.

'T was in that hour his stern command
Called to a martyr's grave
The flower of his beloved land,
The nation's flag to save.
By rivers of their father's gore
His first-born laurels grew,
And well he deemed the sons would pour
Their lives for glory too.

Full many a norther's breath has swept
O'er Angostura's plain
And long the pitying sky has wept
Above the mouldering slain.
The raven's scream, or eagle's flight,
Or shepherd's pensive lay,
Alone awakes each sullen height
That frowned o'er that dread fray.

Sons of the Dark and Bloody Ground,
Ye must not slumber there,
Where stranger steps and tongues resound
Along the heedless air;
Your own proud land's heroic soil
Shall be your fitter grave;

She claims from war his richest spoil
The ashes of her brave.
So, 'neath their parent turf they rest,
Far from the gory field,
Borne to a Spartan mother's breast,
On many a bloody shield;
The sunshine of their native sky
Smiles sadly on them here,
And kindred eyes and hearts watch by
The heroes' sepulchre.

Rest on, embalmed and sainted dead,
Dear as the blood ye gave;
No impious footstep here shall tread
The herbage of your grave;
Nor shall your glory be forgot
While Fame her record keeps,
Or Honor points the hallowed spot
Where Valor proudly sleeps.

Yon marble minstrel's voiceless stone,
In deathless song shall tell,
When many a vanished age hath flown
The story how ye fell;
Nor wreck, nor change, nor winter's blight,
Nor Time's remorseless doom,
Shall dim one ray of glory's light
That gilds your deathless tomb.

( A tribute to all that have given their all for freedom. )

You've Really Got A Hold On Me - YouTube

Nicotine used to have a major hold on me.

I smoked for 42 years, some of them at 5 packs a day.

He really had a major hold on this fella.

I never thought about breaking the friendship I shared with that killer.

I figured that smoking would be a part of my life until the end.

This song is no longer true for me.

I kicked Nic to the curb a little over 6 1/2 years ago.

For those of you beginning your quit journey, you can quit singing this song also.

You don't have to share your life with sickorettes.

You aren't sure you believe you can do it now.

You CAN do it.

You are well on the way to never smoking again.

The Morning After

She had quit smoking a month ago and decided to go to the bar with her guy.

She had a few drinks and was feeling really good.

The next thing you know, she was on a table dancing away.

She awoke the next morning with a pounding headache and no memory of what had happened.

The air smelled of stale smoke.

Here mouth felt like someone had dumped a pound of ashes in it.

She rolled to her side and saw the pack on her nightstand.

It all came back.

She had lost control of herself and her quit !!

She had smoked !!!!

No Name

Posted by OldBones-Larry May 5, 2020

I was riding deep in the desert this morning looking for anything Nic and his guys might be cooking up for the travelers.

I saw someone riding in the distance and decided to ride that way.

When I got closer, I saw the guy was riding a horse at top speed.

My camel easily caught up and I got him to stop.

He said that he was trying to escape from Nic.

He couldn’t tell me where Nic was at though.

He couldn’t remember his name either.

He told me his horse had no name.

I really think that he was just so scared that his memory was failing him.

I directed him to the nearest oasis and advised that he rest himself and his horse.

He agreed to do so and I continued on my search.

As I told him, there is no hurry to cross the desert of NML.

You just need to get to the other side safely.

If you rush your journey, you may run into problems.

The desert is very unforgiving.

Take the journey one day at a time and rest often if you need to.

One step, and then another, will get you to where you want to be.

Andy came home Friday.

My two housemates nephew is Andy.

He arrived Friday.

In a box!!

He was on his way home in Florida on April 9.

He began feeling sick, so he pulled over to the side of the road.

He called for an ambulance and was taken to the hospital.

He was taken up to the Cardiac Cath Lab for treatment.

He didn't make it off the table....

He has suffered a massive coronary before they could do anything.

He went through the system and the county cremated him.

He was sent here to his uncle and we have the duty of doing what needs to be done.

Andy smoked like there was no tomorrow.

He also drank a lot.

Both had a role in his passing.

He worked in construction and therefore didn't eat properly most of the time.

Andy has found the peace he was always searching for.

Andy was only 54.

Andy, Rest In Peace.
