Life doesn't stop for you to have a goes on without you and what you missed is GONE


the following could save you or someone you love at that bar b que on the 4th.

During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.

They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.

Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours.


So, here are 4 ways  to test someone you suspect may have had a stroke

Ask Them To Smile

Have them stick their tongue out. If it is crooked, that is an indicator.

Have them speak a simple sentence coherently.

See If They Can Raise Both Arms.

she saw a dr today but he doesn't treat breaks. the ball on the end of the bone that goes into the shoulder socket is cracked.

evidently, they can't immobilize it for 4 days.

she will see the orthopedist Tuesday morning

She and I were discussing how to function with one hand. (I cut off a thumb 25 years ago and had to adapt)

She also skinned up her face pretty badly.

At least she will be given the best chance of healing because she is not a smoker.

try it if you don't already have COPD or Emphysema.

you can even exhale normally but take all your air through that straw for 5 minutes?

does it make you feel anxious?


that's one direction your health could  take if you keep smoking

She took a bad fall on a raised sidewalk and is in the ER with possible broken bones in her shoulder area

I'll update you if I find out anything else.

(As she concurred, "this really screws up swimming for awhile!"

 (Which may affect flan intake)



She got home late last night. In agony this morning. Looking for an orthopedic surgeon

I'm certain Tommy will post a wonderful Independence Day blog. ( I love that song)

Perhaps on a quit-smoking site it should read:

Find Your Freedom or LOSE YOUR BREATH


If you would like to feel what it's like to have copd or emphysema? Do all your breathing through a straw for five minutes. THEN, You will understand.

    You are not going to put your quit in harms way.
   This means not putting yourself in situations that offer the opportunity to smoke when your resolve is not that strong.
   This means not drinking till you're stooopid

The choice to smoke is yours and always was. That is never going to change.

Smarten Up!

You've seen the best smoking has to offer. Are you waiting to see the worst?

think of how many thousands of times you did that.

is it any wonder it takes time to unlearn and be free of it?

Can you imagine what an emotional toll it takes on the people that are here every day, every year to try and keep new quitters from going in a quit/smoke/quit/smoke/quit/smoke cycle.

Well I'll tell you, it can be very frustrating for us and very disheartening.

We really want you to get it.

We want you to understand the process and help you get through as quickly as possible.

We know it's absolutely no fun to be without your drug.

We promise however, that once you know you are free, you will appreciate the work you put in.

We didn't consciously put the pieces of the puzzle together when we were smokers.

We were as blind to what we were doing as all of you are in your beginnings.

So what's it gonna be? Are you willing to put your quit FIRST for 3 weeks until you are able to see it's manageable?

Or will you just keep playing at this?

I'm done with nicotine. I'm not here for me.

I'm here for you.

   The Cooking Lesson
   Two cannibals meet one day. The first cannibal says, "You know, I just can't seem to get a tender missionary. I've baked 'em, I've roasted 'em, I've stewed 'em, I've barbecued 'em, I've even tried every sort of marinade. I just cannot seem to get them tender."

The second cannibal asks, "What kind of missionary do you use?"

The other replied, "You know, the ones that hang out at that place at the bend of the river. They have those brown cloaks with a rope around the waist and their sort of bald on top with a funny ring of hair on their heads."

"Ah ha!" he replies. "No wonder.. those are friars!"

A good part of the magic of this place is accountability.

We don't hold you accountable, you hold yourself accountable by coming here before you get a hair and smoke.

You have to be responsible. Having us here is to help you.


Showing our children we can't live without something that's bad for us is a horrible example. Most of us here have done it and many of our children took up smoking because we were smokers. Now we're quit and they are still trapped.

Geeesh, how does this cycle end? Usually in disease then death, one smoker at a time.

this is why the decision to quit is so paramount.

until you've decided and have made it difficult to get cigarettes, you'll keep going back.

Why? because it's easy if you have access.

If you live with someone who smokes, have them keep them out of plain sight.

the first 2-3 weeks are the most unnerving times. it's hard not to think of something you did so many times a day. but, it's no worse on the uncomfortable scale than having a bad head cold.

why not think of quitting as a positive thing instead of deprivation?

why not think, "hey i wanted to smoke but I didn't?" "I really CAN do this"

if you enjoy the little victory's, you can put your quit and yourself in a totally different space.

learn the tricks to distract rather than dwell!

add 6 years.

The site was demanding I pick a date and since they don't let you go back over 4 or 5 years, those of us who quit before the site was created, are unable to set our true dates.


it's ok.

168 days to me is as good as 6 years and 168 days because I'm honestly much happier to be free.


sometimes you gotta have it!

I buy my favorite brand and freeze it because bacon is one of those rare treats that I don't eat very often.

This is one of a few recipes my parents taught us. It was one of a few things we made them for breakfast every Sunday morning. (They taught us to make french toast with homemade maple syrup and hash and eggs too)


Bacon Eggs And Rice

Cook your bacon slowly in a large 12" x 2 " frying pan with a lid.

I don't like it super crispy (what's with bacon the powder from overcooking?)

When it's just before how you like it, tong it out and put on paper towels.

Pour the majority of the grease out and save for future flavoring.

Leave the drippings and 3 tablespoons of the grease in the pan and add enough water and rice to make 8 cups of cooked rice.

Crack 10-12 eggs into the rice after its nearly cooked and stir until the eggs are cooked.

Add your reserved bacon back into the egg and rice and serve. (I save about 1/2 the bacon for other things like green beans)

Salt and pepper to taste.

Enjoy But This Stuff Is Addictive!

Limit yourself to two plates. LOLOL

(I made the eggs and rice and used some of the leftover bacon renderings this morning to flavor it)

when you're "home alone"? as in not preparing a whole meal

I like mustard and melted cheese

i'm not sucking a hardboiled egg through a straw to make egg salad over it!

Use the power you were given to talk yourself out of a crave!

I've been having these horrible waves of pain from a dry socket.

When one of those pain waves (craves) came over me, I learned to close my eyes and breathe deep like I was falling asleep. I found doing those 2 things was the path of least resistance in getting the pain to pass quickly.

What we do when we've quit smoking is to work ourselves into a frenzy thinking of having a smoke and building on that thought until we can't take it anymore. It's called self talk. Most of us use it against ourselves often. (Fear of Failure)

WHY NOT USE IT TO HELP YOURSELF? Start talking yourself down from the craves not deeper into them.

Just say to yourself "I'm not smoking anymore and I know it's going to get better and I won't be thinking of smoking in the future"

This really works!

there will be days they may not even know where their own back is, let alone yours.

we were where you are.


we actually KNOW the way through to the other side.

dismiss them one at a time to keep them bite-sized

I have recently been in severe (jaw aching) dental pain for 11 days before the offending tooth was extracted.

My observations as follows:

We tend to be able to fend off pain by telling ourselves it doesn't exist and attempting to ignore it in that way.  This actually works, for awhile. LOLOL

However,  at the end of the day when you are still in pain and you are tired of trying to block it out with your mind, it starts hurting like hell.

My point is, when you've quit, and you reach that month point and feel fully successful (out of pain) and then that pain unexpectedly comes back at you in no mans land,

YOU CAN TURN IT OFF WITH SELF TALK and the other tools you've learned to stay quit with.


Smoking is always a choice. You've proven it by getting to the point you are in your quit.

Keep Unchoosing it!

Cancer's a harda$$!

Your family watching you die 20 years before you should've is a harda$$!

COPD is a harda$$!

How's That For The RAW Truth?

Think back to the failures you've had when you've "tried" quitting in the past.

Think back to what happened before you smoked that deal breaker.

Yep, you started talking to yourself about smoking until you talked yourself right over the edge.

This is why we stress the positive.

It's easy to smoke, we all did it. It's easy to stay addicted if all you let yourself focus on is smoking.

This is why we teach you how to distract yourself and other ways to get the dopamine flowing.

You cannot fail unless you talk yourself into it.

Maggie PM'd me last night and said she is doing much better by not focusing on finding quit smoking pictures and staying away from the site for awhile but misses everyone here.

Maybe send her a note if you are so inclined

Did you know that for some people, talking or hearing about smoking can be more of a trigger than a help?

If you are serious and willing to listen, I'm sure many of the people here could help you in a more personal way. Just PM them and say, being on the site makes me want to smoke more not less. your ideas resonate with me, would you be willing to help me?

I have helped many in this way and I know others have also.

If you approach it defeated, you will be defeated.

Hoggie needed a pill last night. The last time I gave him one, I cut a straw in half and was able to gently blow it into the back of his mouth.

I have been trying to pill him for the past two days without success.

So I tried again last night and he clawed the crap out of me.

I yelled at him and he went out to "his place" for a timeout.

He came in and came up to me wanting to make up. I said "I'm not talking to you. You clawed the crap out of me"

So he went back out to his place.

I went to my desk and he came in a few minutes later and got in my desk drawer (His place when I'm at the desk)

By now, the capsule was beginning to show signs of disintegration and becoming misshapen from about 6 prior attempts. (failed attempts) 

So, he had some wet food on a plate on the desk and I stood that pill up in plain view right in the top of his food, drew his attention to it and, explained to him that I couldn't help him with his misery if he didn't take the pill.

I went back to what I was doing. Five minutes later I looked over and it was gone.

All I needed to explain was that he was the one that would be helped by taking it.

Isn't that what we try to do here?

We are not here primarily for us. We are here for you.

We want you to have what we have. It is as attainable for you at it was for us.

So please listen.

It's nearly as frustrating for us to see you go in circles as it is for you.

Never Accomplished Anything!

You have to take action to get a reaction.

Otherwise, you stay in the same place, unmoved and no wiser.

this was a big hit for Phil.

I used to watch him sing it every night from the wings when we were on the bill with he and Jimmy Durante at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas.

Life and No Mans Land They Are Both Just Unpredictable.

There's no way around it.

I fully expected to have the surgery I have been waiting on for 9 months this coming Tuesday.

The problem is a friggin tooth has other plans.

I had a tooth start hurting last Friday afternoon (doesn't it always happen on the weekend?)

So I called the dentist on Monday. They can't even take me on an emergency basis until this coming Monday.

I call my primary and explain that I have been in pain all weekend and the dentist cannot see me for a week but I have surgery on the 11th and they take me in and give me amoxycillin and vicodan which I've been taking since Tuesday.

So this morning, I called the surgeons office to figure out what he would advise me to do. He said I should cancel the surgery.

So are all the plans I made to make it easy for my recovery are wasted?

No, just postponed a month.

Some things are out of our control but quitting smoking is not one of them.

It's the one thing we can choose to do that nothing can change the course of.

See, smoking is a choice. It is fully in our control.\

Nothing and no one can make you smoke. NOTHING!

So hold onto this one thing you do have control of. It's a powerful thing.

The 2nd barber was talking about how many people cigarettes kill compared to murders, Illness, etc. combined.

Anyway, during the course of the conversation he said he quit a few years ago and he did not understand why some people found it so difficult to quit smoking, that it was absolutely no problem for him. He began limiting his smoking to when he drank. LOLOL.

Came to find out he's still using the ecig with nicotine after being quit for three years.

He said it still gives him pleasure.

People who are still addicted to nicotine don't use it because they choose to, they do it BECAUSE THEY HAVE TO!

I told him the real freedom of quitting is not having to do nicotine every day.

Just another example of why the ecig should not be used to quit.

I didn't know there were quit smoking websites when i quit.

I bought the patch about 3 hours after my last cigarette. Yes i was getting physically antsy. lol

Here's the kicker

The third day of my quit, i realized smoking was only a decision and I didn't have to choose it.

It was such a simple realization, I laughed out loud.

when I laughed out loud, i felt better. From then on, when I got a craving, I laughed

I used the patch over the first two weeks of my quit and during that time I learned my triggers.

i forgot to wear a patch my 4th day. I knew I could go home and get one so i didn't panic.

the next day my body told me i needed wear one.

the last couple days of my first two weeks quit i forgot to wear the patch again and i had a little mind and body pow wow and knew i didn't need the patch anymore.

I found a quit smoking website at the end of my first rwo weeks and spent my first year there, learning everything I could from the elders.

listen to your mind and body when you quit, not the addict.

be determined.

it's only a decision to smoke.

unchoose it!
