(A poet I never claimed to be, but after six years of Fridays, I hope some leeway has been earned!)


A quit is a terrible thing to lose.



My daughter sent this to me and thought it might be helpful to someone here.  It pertains to dealing with our feelings in the current pandemic, but applies as well to quitting smoking.

What individuals can do


CNBC Make It compiled the advice of psychology experts, as well as several health bodies, to find out their top tips:

  • Create a routine — Change out of your pajamas, shower and make a to-do of all the things you want to achieve each day to create a sense of normality and productivity.
  • Break up your day — Find tasks to break up your day and, where possible, change your environment for different activities.
  • Take care of your body — Eat healthily, get plenty of sleep and exercise daily. That could include conducting indoor workout classes, stretching and practicing meditation. 
  • Help others — If you’re not under strict isolation rules yourself, and you’re in a position to do so, find ways to support those in need by offering to run errands and collect supplies for them.
  • Stay connected — Make the most of technology and stay in touch with colleagues, friends and family via phone calls, texts, social media and video conferencing.
  • Limit media intake — Stay informed about the situation via reliable sources, but limit your news and social media intake to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  • Prepare medical supplies — The National Alliance on Mental Illness advises, where necessary, asking your doctor for extended prescription supplies to tide you over for quarantine periods.
  • Fight boredom — Make the most of catching up TV series, reading and exploring projects you have been putting off to beat boredom and stay mentally active.
  • Avoid burnout — Set strict limits to your work to avoid becoming overwhelmed and make time to unwind.
  • Focus on the positives — Amplify good news stories and honor caregivers working tirelessly to resolve the situation.
  • Take one day at a time — Try not to project too far into the future. Remember that these are temporary measures and you are not alone.

If you are quitting smoking, social distancing might exacerbate feelings of depression and anxiety.  There IS a light at the end of the tunnel, but if you feel you can't get past these feelings,  write a blog and ask for help.  If you think professional help might be needed, call  the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline  at 1-800-273-8255.

Amidst the fear, anxiety, isolation and uncertainly of these current times, there is ONE thing over which we have total control:



We know that smoking will not making any of this better, so don't let any thoughts wander there.


YOU have control.

Exert it!!!

And, no, if you are quitting smoking you should not be buying and drinking ANY brand of beer or liquor.  It's well known that drinking alcohol can lead to convoluted thinking.  Convoluted thinking can lead to the belief that "just one won't hurt!"  It WILL, it ALWAYS will, send you down the path to becoming a full-time smoker again.


Stressed out over the virus?    Take a walk!  Call a friend!  Blog!  Just don't drink alcohol.

So - it IS possible.  Encourage your jurisdiction to get busy!!!


Over the years, I have read of many quits being lost due to drinking alcohol.  Here is one tale of woe from one of our community members:


"O wooh is me having a drink and then saying....hey give me one of those ......."


There is no such thing as "just one" to an addict.  It will ALWAYS lead you back where you started...a smoker wanting to quit.

Please don't let this happen to you.  It's totally preventable

I have had my taxes done cheaply by a friend for years; he retired and I was on my own this year  Decided to use Turbo Tax and was moving right along....still grumbling about having to type the same Required Minimum Distribution payer ID, name, address, etc. separately instead of the program figuring it out, but after about three hours, I got to the point where both Federal and State were ready to be filed......hit "File" and the screen FROZE - it just FROZE!


I got on chat and the "helpful" person obviously had no independent knowledge of how the program worked and only had a book from which to look for an answer, and it apparently didn't have one.  I have a BIT of computer savvy and knew what they were suggesting had a high probability of causing the loss of  all of the information I had so painstakingly entered.  No WAY was I doing I just walked away from it.  Just walked away.  I didn't smoke; I didn't yell or scream, I just walked away, ate my lunch,  called a friend WITH some computer knowledge.  Turns out I needed to turn my ad blocker off, re-enter my driver's license ID, other info for the Feds and VOILA  - they filed!  THEN I got e-mails saying they had been rejected by the Feds and State.  I did not need to smoke, yell or scream. I left the e-mails sitting there and got my dinner, read for awhile, THEN opened the e-mails.  Turns out I had transposed two in the string of  the payer ID number for an RMD.  Fixed that and



Smoking was NOT required!

I promise you will be able to deal with life's travails if you quit smoking.  It's actually EASIER to do so!


If so, be cognizant of SPRING on the horizon. For the first two years of your quit, change in seasons, vacations, holidays, annual events of any kind are all times for which you don't have a lot of practice experiencing without smoking.  You might have some strong smoking thoughts.  Be prepared, not surprised.  If you have to, pull out the tools you found helpful early in your quit and use them again.

CDC Recommends

Older people and people with severe chronic conditions should take special precautions because they are at higher risk of developing serious COVID-19 illness.


imho - this does not require anyone to buy surgical masks or extra toilet paper!  It IS worth staying at home to reduce your exposure if you have underlying conditions like diabetes or COPD.  Better safe than sorry.
