DRIVE4COPD and Michael Kalish are excited to present 24M: THE DRIVE4COPD MONUMENT. 24M is a visual representation of the impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the United States to encourage the public to take action to see if they may be at risk and talk to their healthcare professional. 24M is a monument inspired by the DRIVE4COPD pinwheel icon that symbolizes a person's ability to breathe. Internationally renowned artist and sculptor Michael Kalish used his signature medium, the license plate, to create 24 large-scale pinwheels representing the estimated 24 million Americans who may have COPD. The sheer size and scale of 24M represents all corners of the country and embodies the breadth of the disease and its impact on America. A total of 2,400 license plates were used to create the pinwheels, and the number of license plates incorporated from each state reflects the percentage of the population affected by COPD in that state. Each pinwheel base will be in the shape of a state so from an aerial view, the monument comes together to form the map of the contiguous United States. 24M is about the size of half of a football field or approximately 30,000 square feet. Throughout 2011, 24M will visit cities in the four states that have the highest prevalence and population of COPD in the United States: California, Florida, New York and Texas. Through the monument and the message behind it, DRIVE4COPD and Kalish hope to inspire everyone to learn about COPD, find out if they or loved ones might be at risk and to do something about it. http://www.drive4copd.com/missing-millions/24m.aspx
