2011>World Health Organization produced this
video for World No Tobacco Day 2011, the theme of which is a public health
treaty, the "WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control". The tobacco
epidemic kills nearly 6 million people each year, of whom more than 5
million are users and ex-users of tobacco and more than 600 000 are
nonsmokers exposed to second-hand smoke. The WHO Framework Convention on
Tobacco Control is the world's answer to the tobacco epidemic. Adopted by
the World Health Assembly in May 2003 and entered into force less than two
years later, it now has more than 170 Parties, making it one of the most
rapidly embraced treaties in the history of the United Nations. World No
Tobacco Day 2011 highlights the critical importance of ensuring full
implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

There are different ways of approaching the subject on a site like this with addiction as the theme. One way is to be specific that this is a Buddhist site, a Catholic site, a Muslim site, an Atheist site, etc... Another way is to say that this site would prefer that you park your "religion" at the front door. Another alternative is to Welcome spirituality in whatever manifestation it might present in your addiction recovery. I always understood that it was this third option that was the norm for this site. If you are Jewish and wish to express your quit in Jewish language I would welcome that self-expression with an open heart and I believe that the majority of us would also. I happen to be Christian. I couldn't express myself atheistically any more than an atheist could express their spirit in my language. But I cannot divorce myself from my soul while maintaining my Integrity. As far as my own quit journey has manifested in me Integrity is a Very Important gift I receive from living Addiction FREE! FREE to be ME without hiding behind a smoke cloud! Now how can I do that while excizing my most truthful being from me and parking it at the front door? I AM a spiritual being and I express that part of me in the only language I know - not because it is in any way superior to your spirit but because it's MY TRUTH! I respect YOUR TRUTH! All I ask is that you respect mine or if you really can't - feel free to skip over my blogs because chances are good I'll say something about my perception of me and my World that will offend you - and that is NOT my purpose! Tolerance is all I ask! Tolerance is what I offer!

COPD is a death sentence Myth You can’t reverse COPD, but it doesn’t mean your life is over, either. However, with any chronic illness, it’s often about getting the right kind of support to stay positive and motivated enough to manage the disease. Reading more about it, connecting with other patients, and seeking help for depression can all go a long way toward improving your quality of life. Please consider joining our Support Group and share with other COPDers information, advice and mostly Great POSITIVE Support! You can live a QUALITY LIFE! A Waste of Time!

Waste your money and you're only out of money, but waste your time and you've lost part of your life. Michael Leboeuf If I sat down and smoked nonstop every cigarette I haven't smoked since I quit it would take me 23 days, 13 hours, and 28 minutes! That's a lot of time I'm glad I didn't waste killing myself one puff at a time! It's my LIFE and I'm worth it! And so are YOU!

Shared grief is half the sorrow,
but happiness  when shared, is  doubled.

Life often brings us to a crossroads of choices and it can be confusing as to where to turn. Somewhere along the way I have turned down many a blind alley and wound up in a few ditches. I think that's human. But then there came a time when I read and took in what M. Scott Peck was actually communicating in his book, The Road Less Traveled. I've read and reread at different times the message but it seemed to apply to other luckier people not to me until I realized that he wasn't writing this book for the fortunate - you know the type who get upset when they break a fingernail! Tommy many months ago came here to this Community and captured what we are all about and why we are successful in quitting smoking! Smoking is destructive and we do it to ourselves so even if we didn't set out to do it or even recognize what we were doing we had actually been self-destructive which destroys our self esteem! When a cigarette is our Best Friend then people aren't, are they? But when we quit, we have to reintegrate into the human Community and Tommy calls that sincere, caring give and receive relationship "Collateral Kindness"! It isn't just a nice little bonus of quitting successfully-it's a requirement of learning how to become that Ex-Smoker we aim to be. We learn to share our grief, not with a dead leaf wrapped in paper and dipped in 4000+ deadly chemicals but with real life flesh and blood human beings (YOU and ME!) We also learn to spread our JOY not just about our Milestones and Triumphs of beating the Addiction that lives in us but in all aspects of living - of how Happily we CAN live if we DECIDE to! Before we know it we find ourselves being kinder to Family members, Coworkers, the Clerk at the grocery store, even folks who are not so kind to us! But going through life Addiction FREE and Happy doesn't mean that our days are always without grief - it just means that we are more open to Compassion both in the giving and reception so that we know that when Life gets painful - and it will, at times- we know that we are not alone and lonely with our killer cigarettes as our only comfort!  The more you give- the more you receive! Let's be there for each other because that's what works about this Community!

The Exer Within!

There is more in us than we know. If we can be made to see it,
perhaps,  for the rest of our lives, we will be unwilling to settle
for less.  Kurt Hahn

Each of us has within us a person who wishes to live LIfe Abundantly! We want Happiness, Health and Well-being! But so often we can't find our way to this way of life, especially as addicts! Yes, Smoker, I am speaking of You and of Me! I'm not saying that smoking caused every unhappiness that ever came my way, but I DO know that in spite of my diagnosis of COPD that when I quit smoking and began living addiction free I discovered something remarkable! For me, emotions are a choice! If I want to be Happy, it's not dependent on what job I have (or if I have a job), what home I live in or even how lucky I was to pick and get a FANTASTIC Wife! I could have all of these things and be miserable or none of them and be Happy! Happiness depends on ATTITUDE! And attitude is a CHOICE! All I have to do is make a DECISION and HONOR it with my total being! Living Life Abundantly is all I'm willing to settle for with whatever life I have left in me! You see, I don't believe that I have less Quality of Life than the next guy, no matter what the medical community says! My Quality of Life is Better than ever!!! Every single moment of health I have I use to the max - I don't have time for emotional bloodsuckers (you know who I'm talking about!) My time is preciously valuable and I will use it to affirm LIFE with every action I take! I'm more honest, direct and assertive because I have no time for game playing! Imagine somebody who thinks they'll live forever and so never strive to excell ! But only the Father knows the length of his days! I don't know if I live longer than him but I do know I will live Better than him because I know that time is a very limited commodity! LIVE LIFE to the fullest! Embrace each day with a grin on your face and gratitude in your heart! It really is up to you! Why settle for less?

Smokers and Genes

Posted by Thomas3.20.2010 May 11, 2011

The last time I copied and pasted a technical article ADMIN decided I broke the rules so I'm using my own words to tell you about a study I read this morning! Hopefully it won't get cut out! This study was done in Spain to compare smokers' lung tissue and Moderate COPD lung tissues. Their conclusion:

"The 'healthy' smokers experience similar gene expression changes as those seen in smokers who have developed the disease", concludes Ricardo Bastos. "This once again underlines the decisive role of smoking in causing these changes". Bastos' team of researchers used PCR technique to study 42 genes related to tissue and vascular inflammation and changes in the proteins that code these genes.

Even if you do not have symptoms of COPD you can ask your Doctor to give you a simple breathing test called Spirometry which can indicate whether medical intervention might be indicated! Doctors don't necessarily think to offer this test (mine sure didn't!) Ask by name for the test and find out where you stand!

COPD is an auto-immune disease that reacts to the pollution of even one single cigarette! It doesn't care if you are young or old! It doesn't care if you are a closet smoker or a walking chimney! It doesn't care if you smoke one a week or 3 packs a day! If you smoke AT ALL - you risk cancer, heart disease, stroke, bronchitis and emphysema! COPD is simply a combination of 2 of the following: Asthma, Bronchitis, Emphysema or Alpha 1 (hereditary respiratory obstruction)! So if you already grew up with Asthma then you were already 1/3 of the way there! People with Asthma are playing with fire! Don't ever think it can't happen to me because the truth is it CAN! If you have been diagnosed, don't despair! Quitting Smoking is the single BEST way to slow the progress of the disease! TODAY is a Great Day to Quit Smoking!
