Spirometry Testing

Posted by Thomas3.20.2010 May 20, 2010

Hey Everybody!  Sorry to get technical but I worry sometimes that what happened to me could happen to you guys and if it could be prevented it's worth it!  Anybody that has a history of smoking should be aware of a test called spirometry.  I never heard of this thing till I was ALREADY diagnosed with COPD!  But half of people with COPD have not yet been diagnosed and like all chronic diseases early diagnosis is critical to positive outcomes!  Well, here goes;

If you have a chronic productive cough ( with sputum anything but clear), shortness of breath, wheezing, and/or smoker's raspy voice, especially AFTER you quit smoking, then you should ask your doctor to give you a spirometry test!  My doctor KNEW I had constant coughing for years and still never suggested I take the test - I had to tell him that I wanted it!(found out about the test on the internet!)  That's because my lungs were overinflated.  If you ever hear a doctor say that your lungs are overinflated they mean you have emphysema and you darn well better get a spirometry test!  It's best for anybody who's cough doesn't clear up after 6 weeks quit to get this test!  Most likely your doctor has this machine in his office and can do the test that very day and the results are instant.  It doesn't cost much to take the test either and it will tell you if you are inhaling and most important exhaling properly!  You just breathe as hard and fast into a tube as you can and the machine measures the air that comes out and compares it with what can be expected for your height, weight, and age.  So if you are even a little suspicious that something just isn't right -  Ask your doctor  if you can take this test!  You want to know as soon as possible if everything's fine or not!  O.K. done preaching but I do wonder why doctors don't think to give this test more often when they know their patients smoke or smoked.  Any ideas on this one, medical people out there?

I didn't smoke 600 cigarettes

I didn't spend $150.00

I didn't waste 4 whole days and 4 hours inhaling!

I din't call in sick at work!

I didn't cough until my ribs hurt and my eyeballs felt like they would pop!

I DID A LOT OF PRAYING! THANK YOU LORD!

WORLD RENEWAL

Posted by Thomas3.20.2010 May 19, 2010

Greetings! I am the Great Aztec Tlatoani or Chief Speaker of Texcoco.  I am on a quest to find the magic feather of Quetzalcoatl - the Plumed Serpent.  This feather when located will restore the world for you to the way you knew it before you started smoking!  All the air will be free of tobacco smoke, all you furniture, carpets, curtains,  and bed linens will be clean of 3rd hand smoke.  All the poisons will have been absorbed back into their rightful place in the world.  And your body will be purified from all toxins in your heart and lungs and even the cells of your body.  Yea - even your DNA will be restored so if any damage occurred it will immediately be reversed with one touch of the magic feather.  Your body will be healthy and whole again.  And not just your body, but the bodies of all your loved ones, friends, and pets who have inhaled your  2nd hand smoke will be restored.  It will be as if you never smoked in your life!  All memories in your brain will be restored as well.

Join me, mighty warriors against the enemy and we shall fight bravely,  we shall be victorious, and we shall encounter the magic feather of the Great Plumed Serpent  and restore and remake ourselves and the world together!  The battle will be arduous. The warriors will show great  strength and courage but together our victory is assured!

If only this fantasy could be true!  But sadly tobacco has forever taken the magic feather out of our grasp.   The unfortunate truth is that we have been damaged beyond perfect repair - every one of us!  But the Quest goes on - as individuals, we still make the effort to quit and protect our quit, to diet and exercise doing our best to remediate the damage.  As a community, we inform others of the hazards of smoking, the benefits of quitting, and we support medical research and development to find a cure for smoke related diseases.  And like all questers - We must NEVER GIVE UP!  Hope reigns eternal!  God Bless Every one of you!  May you find the magic feather!

RE: THE HAPPY QUIT!

Success or failure depends more upon attitude than upon capacity - successful men act as though they have accomplished or are enjoying something.  Soon it becomes a reality.  Act, look, feel successful, conduct yourself accordingly and you will be amazed at the positive results!  - William James

I Believe!

Be not afraid of life. Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create the fact.  -William James

When we smoke knowing that we are damaging our health, we are committing the little suicide.  People are afraid to quit smoking but it's just a claim to life that we're making!   The quit for me started in the head. I believed that I could quit thus helping to create the fact.  I am on DAY 50 today and at this moment helping to create the fact of Day 51!  That's how I know that I'll make it to Day 100, 1 year, and so forth one day at a time if God grants me life. Life is worth living! Don't Smoke!

I have been participating in a website for COPD and hear story after story of folks who are disabled from emphysema, many of them are racing the clock for a lung transplant!  These unfortunate people are not only in their 70s or even 60s many of them are in their 50s and even 40s!  I pray for them and their families because they physically suffer tremendously for long periods of time and are almost always financially devastated! I am so blessed to have caught my diagnosis at a relatively early stage that I can still take control of my life and prevent most if not all of this! If you are still battling yourself to quit smoking, I urge you to remember that we're not just talking about LIFE but also about QUALITY OF LIFE! Please DECIDE to quit!  I don't want this to happen to you and your family!  If you already have COPD then the quit is the single most  effective action you can  take to care for yourself! I hope with all that's in me that you will quit today!  Thank You for listening!  Praise the LORD if you have quit without getting a smoke related illness!
