New Day, "Prioritize"

Posted by JACKIE1-25-15 Jun 26, 2018

I had no idea where the Spirit would lead today for my morning devotional blog. So many things came into my heart and mind as I read, studied and pondered.   As I studied and reminded of my imperfections. (e.i. Forgive me if I have hurt someone along the way.)  In my moment of indecision, God allowed someone who is very dear to me in Christ to call.  It was a very rare call for the time of day and how the call came through. It only lasted a few minutes and was cut off.  But those moments of conversation helped me to continue in the direction I am to go no matter the trials or persecution and without a doubt. Please be mindful these are lessons for me as well.

Colossians 3:2 NIV

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

If you were to ask the goals of the average, everyday individual, most of them would answer with something temporal—save a “nest egg” for retirement, get a better job, build a “dream home,” buy a new car, find a life mate…When was the last time that you heard anyone (Christians of course) communicate spiritual goals in everyday conversation—get closer to God, win more souls to the kingdom, give more to support ministry…As Christians, we must remember to prioritize God’s Kingdom above and before anything else (Matthew 6:33). But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well

Remember the following as it relates to worldly goals:

  • -You may build a beautiful house, but eventually, it will crumble
  •  -You may develop a fine career, but one day it will be over
  •  -You may save a great sum of money, but you can’t take it with you
  •  -You may be in superb health today, but in time it will decline
  •  -You may take pride in your accomplishments, but someone will surpass you

ONLY WHAT YOU DO FOR CHRIST WILL LAST!

Mentor: definition- a wise and trusted counselor. I can say it freely without hesitation because she is and has been my mentor and role model on my quitting smoking journey.  I am EXtremely proud to highlight this Elder today.  She is the prime example of someone I would like to aspire to be as an Elder. This wise Elder is the calm before and after the storm.  Her words of wisdom are seldom misunderstood for they are seasoned with understanding and Christlike humility.  She shows genuine care and respect for others.  When she speaks we should all listen, not only to her words but her delivery of unbiased wisdom laced with love from the heart.  Her approach to Eldership, even to those who have relapsed is nonjudgemental with unconditional support.  Her background as a nurse speaks to you directly with concern for good health and mental well-being. "She is not a complainer".

I am very proud to highlight Barbara145  and by the power invested in me as the author of The Wise Elder Series,

I induct Barbara145  with the Quit Date of October 11, 2013, into This Wise Elders Series, "Hall of Fame".  Please take your place, Ms. Barbara, you have earned it.  I love you, we love you, God loves, continue to keep peace, love, and hope alive.

New Day "Be Prepared"

Posted by JACKIE1-25-15 Jun 24, 2018

Prepare yourself every day, by putting on the full Armour, of God

Dress with Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Faith, Salvation, Spirit, Word of God, Prayer

Just like breathing, take it wherever you go.

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the [a]wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of [b]the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—

Today God use me as you see fit.   I am not to mistake it for something that I am doing but what the Holy Spirit wills.   I am not to take credit but to watch in delight as the Spirit flows from me to others.  I am not to try and control Forgive me for my sins as  I forgive those who trespass against me.  Strengthen me as I learn to put on the full Armor of God to face the wiles of the devil. I do not have all the answers I trust you and that Your will be done. I pray, In Jesus Name Amen.

Phillippians 4:13

I can do all things through Jesus Christ which strengthens me.

People often ask how am I capable of doing the things that I do?   Whether I am dealing with a wayward child, a sick relative, failed relationship, restoring a home, mechanical repairs, running a 5K, and maneuvering an obstacle course... just to name a few or my many life crises: this scripture is always with me.  Along with Mohammed Ali's "float like a butterfly sting like a bee." ) when I am running. Just telling it like it is)

I remember the day in 1983 when Evander Holyfield (World Champion Boxer) made a surprise visit to our office building.  Someone came to me and whispered where he was. I located him and I asked him for an autograph.  He signed his name along with this note. "Phillippians 4:13."  When I got back to my desk I searched my Testament for the passage. I can do all things through Jesus Christ which strengthens me.  I had heard the passage many times but this time it stuck with me.

At one point I had this scripture framed hanging where I could readily see it.  To make a long story short, I am a witness that if we BELIEVE, we CAN do all things through Christ...NOT ON OUR OWN...We can make it.  I believe I can and I do, did, have done and will do through His power and strength.  Amen

Write a note to yourself.  Keep it where you can see it.

I Know that I can _______________________ through Jesus Christ who gives me the strength.

Fill in the blank with your crisis

Yes, YOU can make it.  He has already given you the strength, just use it!

Today God continues to use me.  It is a Joy that will extend to others.  I am not to mistake it for something that I am doing but what the Holy Spirit wills.   I am not to take credit but to watch in delight as the Spirit flows from me to others.  I am not to try and control it.  I pray, Amen.

From the Other Side

Posted by JACKIE1-25-15 May 16, 2018

Missy's Mandolinrain 's blog reminded me of an encounter I had today. I was returning home from shopping and decided to stop at the WAWA  for a cup of coffee.   I am parked at the WAWA checking my phone and making up a song about sitting at the WAWA waiting on my ya ya. but don't have to smoke. This is one of the main places that I purchased my cigs. The song thought was cute but I could not get all of my words to rhyme.  I go inside, get my coffee and proceed to the line. Quite a long line I would say but I didn't mind the wait.  Retirement helps to keep me out of rush mode. As I stood in line, I noticed the cashier was anxiously searching behind the counters.  She mumbled to the customer "we may not have any". The customer waiting had her head down resting on her arm on the counter. It was more like please, please, please find what I need.  Relief, the cashier found her brand. As she stood up I noticed that her face was swollen along with that bluish-purple look you get from smoking. The one we don't see when we smoke.  Now it is 81 degrees outside and she has on this heavy jacket.  A little girl was very close to her. Cashier asked are these the ones?  Something short is a red box.  Yes, the brand she wanted. I could see the relief on her face. She got two packs paid for them and quickly stuffed them in her pocket as if to hide them and we do try to hide them or even look around to see who is watching us buy them.  Sad, she was pregnant. I tried to tell myself, maybe they weren't for her. She put her sunglasses on and walked out of the store with the little girl.

Next person in line asked for a pack of Salem light menthol.  My brand but he wanted the "shorts" I smoked the regulars. Shorts were always too short for me. Wow Iooked at them, said to myself, I use to buy those things.   The gentlemen struggled to pull the money from his wallet and get the correct change to pay for that pack.  How I remember emptying my money jars to go get a pack. $6.56 they haven't gone up that much in 3 years if I remember correctly. I stood there wanting to say something about EX but I didn't.  I just thanked God that I am free and do not have to stand in line for smokes and there is no temptation to buy any  The cashier seemed surprised that all I wanted was my coffee with my coffee.

As I proceeded to my car  I sang.

So I was sitting at the WAWA waiting for my JAVA  Yeah

May sound funny but I don't smoke anymore. Yeah.

Please take a moment to read a blog i wrote about the word I was taught.Doable

Life is ALWAYS going to happen - it's how you respond that tells the tale.

Lots of things happen in life out of our control.

Smoking is not one of them. THAT is a choice! Choose wisely!

Life has its ups and downs, it’s thrilling and terrifying, easy and difficult..........quitting smoking.......... has a better ending!

Choose to deal with what life throws at you without smoking!

It IS a matter of life and breath.

Life IS grand when we don't smoke!!!

This is the REAL freedom – when you realize how much smoking controlled your life! This takes time to see clearly. But – it is SO worth the time it takes to unlearn this!

Isn't life grand with cleaner lungs?

You can CHOOSE how you will think today - grateful, or sad, or remorseful, or guilty, or wishing you could hide behind a cloud of smoke instead of dealing with what life has thrown at you.  Choose wisely!

There is no magic pill to take that will do the work for you. You must commit yourself to it 100%. If you do, I promise you will be successful. The payday will be both monetary and physical. You will literally be saving your own life.

Most importantly As you move forward, you make NEW memories for your associations and triggers

"Slipsies" Bewildered

There was a lot of slipping and sliding going on in my 5th month here.  I got this response from the original blog.  Why do people "slip"

Mrs.Rum

"There's an easy answer.  They DIDN't work hard.  They TALKED hard.  If you've been here long enough you can spot them a mile away.  Said what they thought sounded right, what we wanted to hear, all the things that made it sound like they were in it to win it.  But it always sounds off somehow.  And they are the ones who come back and have 'slipped'.  And yes, even after years of quit - they will slip because they didn't mean it.  The option stayed open.

By the same token you can tell the ones who mean it.  We almost never see them back here having slipped.

I Remember When

Posted by JACKIE1-25-15 Feb 17, 2018

Today I completed my taxes and remembered three years ago doing my income taxes for the first time after quitting smoking.  It was roughly a week to 10 days into my quit and I wrote a blog.  Here is an excerpt to help those who are new.

"Yesterday, I started doing my income taxes and of course the thought of a cig and the urge to smoke arose, but I was able to get pass it.  I have realized that I can get pass it.  I can get pass the urge to smoke.  It only last for about 1 minute now and only 3-4 times a day.  Before I allowed stress to be an excuse. But I am preparing myself when a stressful situation arises.  I keep telling myself that the urge is not going to last that long.  I tell myself NO and mean it.

It may be that the urge may never go away. I just have to keep telling myself no.  When i say no the urge stops."

Three years later, If  get an urge it never lasts more than a split second.  Poof!  I know I will get pass it because, I don't do that anymore. The urge is gone almost before it comes.  So my advise to you if you are new is just get pass it each time.  Tell yourself NO and mean it!  You will stay free. It gets better. Get pass it.  (original blog 2/3/2015)

This 3 year milestone causes much reflection. So much so that I have spent time reading my old blogs.  I see where I started, who was with me and how I have grown in so many different areas of my life all which I am humbly grateful.

I have so many thoughts and reading the blogs brings back memories, more than I can expound upon.  Since I consider myself  a bottom line person there is no way I can speak on it all.  I would not want to bore you. (smile)   A wise elder once told, "the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing". c2q . So today the #1 main thing is "who was with me".  I am thankful to those who encouraged, inspired, challenged and sometimes even tested me to get to this point in my quit smoking journey.  There are too many names to name, the ( Elders, Quit Buddies, Friends , Admin, Supporters).  To the leaders who came before me, I truly understand their passion, compassion and desire to give their very best "to help" on this quit smoking journey.   Normally, I would say that today is not about me; but truth be told, "today it really is".  After 3 years, I have grown to become one of them, "to help".  I pray that I am able to do it with the same love, compassion, patience, humility, knowledge, wisdom, peace and understanding that I have been shown to inspire someone to be like us......FREE,  which quite frankly "is the bottom line".

As Mike.n.Atlanta would say, "keep on keepin' on" and Summer-Rain  would say "the journey continues".

I say, "Hold on, hang tough, stay close, never give up, never give in, protect your quit it is your own because the best is yet to come".

My advice today is to blog or journal about your journey, you will be glad you did.
