Quiet after the storm

Posted by JACKIE1-25-15 Aug 30, 2016

It may seem that your world is falling apart just because you quit smoking. Don’t believe it. That is not true.  It is a lie. Brainwash!  As humans we all have to experience life crisis.  The death or illness of a love one, our own illnesses, a love one addicted to drugs or alcohol,  job loss, rebellious children , divorce,  bills not be paid and the mortgage is due. The list could go on and on.  Yes, these are stressful situations that could be used as an Excuse to smoke.  Thank God, I am a witness for myself and of others right here on this site that I know it has been proven time and time again beyond a shadow of doubt that “you don’t have to smoke”!   Life happens whether you smoke or not.  So you say what do you do when life happens?

1)      Have a tool kit prepared  (what works for YOU)

2)      Come here first, reach out for support

3)      Know that you do not have to smoke, NO MATTER WHAT is going on.NOPE

4)       Educate yourself about nicotine addiction.  Read Read Read

Get through it!  Know that smoking is not going to fix it.   This journey is about moving forward not backwards.  As Ex-smokers we will continue to learn and relearn how to deal with life issues.  It is not an overnight process.  It continues but NEF never ever forget that vicious cycle of addiction before you quit.

Lately, I have had to deal with all types of emotions, some I am just learning to identify.  Frustration in dealing with an elderly parent, disappointment in family members support.  The anxiety of not knowing what to do and doing everything you can and still is not enough.  Then there is this anger associated with all of it.   Along with all the other chaos in between.   Through it all I know smoking was not going to help and was not an option on the table for me.  So I may not have said the right things or did the right things.  By gosh I did a lot of deep breathing.    I keep telling myself that God’s got it and I will not smoke over this.  I know that I am a better person for not smoking through this storm.

So go through the storm.  Be prepared for the high winds and the flood.  Close the door to smoking.  Pull out your raincoat and protect your quit.  Guess what?  The wind will blow, thunder will roar, the lightening will flash and the rain will fall but you will not die.  You will live because Not One Puff Ever will keep you free.  Know that the storm will not last forever and sometimes you have to go through to get through.  There is a greater reward at the end.  FREEDOM> .The quiet after the storm.

Add to the list of what to do

Amen

Today/Yesterday

Posted by JACKIE1-25-15 Aug 24, 2016

Yesterday  was long stressful day for me.  It is 1200 am and I am just getting home.  I did not smoke over it. No craves here.  I just returned from the hospital.  I had to leave my dad @ the VA Hospital where he can recieve the Assisted;living care that he deserves. WWII Vet two tours of duty.  Coast Guard and Army.  He said he knew I would leave him in good hands and if something goes wrong I will take care of it. I am still crying.  I did not know he had that confidence in me.  He said I did the right thing.

Funny i went outside to get some air in a no smoking area.  A guy came out to light up I told him it was a no smoking area. He was combative.  I told him if he did not leave I was going to call securtiy.  He left.

Sorry I was not able to run the train today.

577 DOF i think.

This is a potluck so you have to supply your food and beverage.  No alcohol is allowed.  You have to give your number of DOF and/or give some words of encouragement or whatever you want to express.  Everyone is invited to celebrate with the newbies.

I just want to say: "Don’t’ give up and don’t give in, no matter what don’t light up".

Lets get this party started!

I love EX 'cause we are family

We can agree to disagree

Some days can get rough

Sometimes the going is tough

But we have a place to be

That helps to keep us free

We are here to fulfill a need

To give and also recieve

No matter what’s the problem

Somebody will help us solve them

We may need an ear to listen,  while we cry or vent

Thank goodness and mercy we are never charged rent

Thank God for EX, Admin, the elders and the newbies

We are all in a wonderful journey of freedom you see

Each day we stand, holding each other’s hand to pledge

Never to turn back and walk to the death on  the smokers ledge

Each day we ride the Freedom Train with cheer

We acknowledge each other’s accomplishments while riding here

Some may get dropped off into  No Man’s land

But someone is always there to take their hand

I love EX, I am addicted this is so very true

Each day I am awaken here to something new

God bless my EX family,

The journey never ends

Posted by JACKIE1-25-15 Aug 14, 2016

The Elders have had a major impact in support of my quit.  I remember so many things they would tell us. Summer Rain would always say “And the journey continues”.  This statement is so on point.  Even though we celebrate milestones, I would look at my numbers and think that it just wasn’t enough compared to the number of years that I smoked.  Now at 567 days I really feel like I have come a long way.  This new awareness is part of the journey that never ends.  I have grown in some areas and will continue to do so.   Even though we count them, growth is not truly measured by the number of days smoke free but the strength to continue in the journey.  So no matter what day you are on in your quit, know that you have embarked on an amazing life of freedom if you never turn around.

Guilia would always say“ for every test or trial that you go through you will become stronger if you don’t smoke".  Along with that you learn something new about yourself.  You recognize areas in your life that can improve.  There are no limitations in this journey so allow yourself to be open to change.  If so,  all aspects of your life will become better.  Isn’t that worth looking forward to?   So go through the trials, test, and the tough times but never give up. Thank God for the journey because it will never end.  Whether it is learning to care more about ourselves, accepting how special and unique we are or being able to forgive and apologize to move forward. Better yet, just handling life crisis without smoking we become wiser.

I just crossed a fork in the road leading to a promise of new adventures.  With an attitude of gratitude, I am thankful for the inspiration, motivation, education, and challenges that being here have opened my mind to change to make my life better, without smoking. The journey continues, with bumps, humps, curves, and inclines in the road but it doesn’t matter what day we are on as long as we continue to move Forward ,Onward and Upward.

Thanks EX.

Blowing steam

Posted by JACKIE1-25-15 Aug 13, 2016

565 days and I am very tired, was upset and have had to take some deep breaths to chill out.  No, I am not going to smoke but my temper activated the addictive brain.  However, slight the addictive brain can try its best to take control.  I am an addict.  Remember that I tell myself.   There will come a point in time you have to protect the quit.  I have a choice to remain free on go into a senseless mindless zone of smoking.  I cannot use smoking as an option.  I am thankful that I have moved past the point of giving up my quit.  No matter what I know I will not smoke.  I have come too far to allow someone’s behavior to upset me to smoke.  Nothing is worth me losing my quit over. Several incidents have happened today that would normally cause me to smoke if I was still a smoker.  I am smarter than my addiction.  I will not feed it. I will not give it life.  I choose freedom.

Sometimes newbies wonder why someone like myself with 565 could be dealing with the choice to smoke or not. Well, it happens, thank God I am strong enough to realize it is only for a moment, and this too shall pass. As time goes by it does get easier and the urges are only a flicker in time but you still recognize the times you would have smoked but that does not give you a reason to so protect your quit.  I am going to always protect mine.  Even if I get angry, I will not smoke.  My steam does not blow as hot ,fast or as long as it did in the beginning of my quit. So that is progress.   I am still learning. Whew.   A wise Elder once told me" it is better to blow steam than to smoke".  (Jennifer)    So I am just blowing steam but protecting my quit.  That is why I am hereblogging instead of blowing smoke.  Another day WON.

Doable

Posted by JACKIE1-25-15 Aug 3, 2016

When I came to this site and starting reading blogs I kept seeing this word, “doable”.   It would be in blogs, sometimes in CAPS, bold letters, underlined, or even in “quotation marks”.   It really stood out in the blogs that I read.  Quite frankly, when I first started seeing  the word  I couldn’t remember ever hearing it before.  Even though I had an idea what it meant I still took the time to look up the definition.

Doable - definition of doable by The Free Dictionary

www.thefreedictionary.com/doable  do·a·ble (do͞o′ə-bəl) adj.

Possible to do: a program that is tough but doable.

doable (ˈduːəbəl) adj. capable of being done; practical. do•a•ble

Nancy, Guilia and Marilyn just to name a few, would consistently use the word “doable” in their blogs and messages.  Emphasizing that quitting can be difficult at times but it is so “doable”.  They reiterated that if you did not take one puff NOPE that quitting is “doable”.  They blogged about things to do to start and stay free from nicotine because it is doable.

I embraced the word and mentally it became a force to help me.   Yes, things can get tough but NOPE no matter what quitting is doable.  It is understandable if some may not connect with NOPE so I ask you to connect to the word DOABLE because quitting smoking is so “DOABLE”.

As they would say, instead of smoking come here first, study, learn and use quit smoking tools that work for you.   Start saying “I don’t do that anymore”.  “I am a nonsmoker.”  Believe you can because it is doable.  One day at a time quitting is doable.  Hang tough, stay close never give in never give up.

556 DOF is proof that quitting is doable.

Education is the key to a successful quit
